Vacuum is applied to the transformer for two hours more and vacuum of the transformer will be
removed by nitrogen or dry air.

1. APPLICATION
The function of dehydrating breather produced by following DIN 42567 and DIN 42562 standards
is to remove the moisture of air flowing to conservator during the cooling of transformer. Thus
weakened strength of oil dielectric breakdown due to moisture and water condensation in
conservator can be avoided. Dehydrating breathers extend the lifetime of transformers and make
them operate in safer conditions.
Dehydrating breather with capacity 0.5-1 kg are produced by following DIN 42567,
and ones with capacity 1-2-3 kg are produced by following DIN 42562 standards.

2.2. Filling
Bind fuse (11) shall be opened and glass cylinder is filled with fresh dryer granulates from there.
After filling dismantled oil bowl (4) with new transformer oil, it shall be connected to dehydrating
breather by holder (5).
3.1. Montage
Normally the L DIN 42562 type dehydrating breather is supplied completely, with oil vessel (7),
packed and ready for mounting. The dehydrating breather must be mounted on to the transformer
before the transformer is put into service. For this, following work must be carried out on site:
Ensure that the breathing pipe and the gaskets are clean and dry.
Round flange at the end of the upper pipe shall be connected air tightly to counter flange on
conservator with bolts. Secure the bottom end of the pipe to the transformer tank by means of the
clip just above the triangular flange (5) welded to the pipe end.
3.2. Filling
Check that each glass cylinder (6) is securely assembled with appropriate cover (3) or
intermediate cover (2) and intermediate plate 1. Sealing rings must produce an airtight joint
and also the hexagonal bolts must be tight. Then fill the chambers with fresh drying granulates
through the holes in the cover/intermediate cover.
3.3. Assembly
When attaching the topmost chamber to the flange (5) and when joining two chambers together,
do not tighten the wing nuts (8;9) one-sidedly otherwise there is a danger of breaking the glass
cylinder. Fill the removed glass vessel (7) to the mark with new transformer oil, assemble it to the
bottom chamber and tighten it with the wing nuts to the above chamber.

4.1. Test
After mounting of the dehydrating breather check whether it works properly. For this operation air
is pumped into the Buchholz relay. As a result of it a fluctuation occurs both on the surface of oil
bowl (4) and within dryer granulates in glass cylinder. Otherwise it indicates a stagnation has been
occurred in pipe connection of conservator with Buchholz relay or specifically in conservator, and
it should be removed at once.
2. SHIPMENT
Radiators that have been removed from the transformer for shipment are delivered fitted with blank
flanges or plastic plugs to render them airtight. Sometimes the radiators are bolted together at the
flanges for the same purpose. The butterfly valves on the sides of the tank are turned to the off
position for shipment and sealed with blank flanges. (Fig. 1, Items 1 and 2).

2. SCOPE
The mounting works of transformers are described in this section.
3. CONCEPTS
The stages of mounting are given in the below procedure.
4. PROCEDURE
4.1 Transport
Generally large sized transformers are transported without or partly with bushings, conservator,
radiators, fans, pipes accessories, radiator support, bushing domes, etc.
The oil in tank is either lowered or completely drained off; afterwards the tank is filled with dried
nitrogen. The drained oil is transported in barrels or with special oil trucks to the site.
SCHNEIDER should be informed immediately, if any damages occur during transport. The
accessories and insulating materials should be protected from moisture until the end of
commencement of mounting works.
4.2 Erection
Followings are performed at site.
The transformer is transported to the place of erection and the main body is adjusted to be
parallel to the ground.
The wheels (if provided) are mounted on to the transformer.
At least two of the wheels are fixed with brakes (if provided).
4.3 Erection Works
Below parts, which may be dismantled for transportation shall be assembled. After erection has
been completed, any damaged paint should be touched-up.
Attention!
During mounting active part should be avoided from getting exposed to air as much as
possible.
4.3.1 Cooling System
Mounting of radiators (see N2124 0007).

4.3.2 Conservator (if any)
Conservator should be mounted.
Pipes, buchholz relay, valves etc. should be unpacked, cleaned and mounted.
The mounting of conservator with air cell should be done according to instruction N 2124 0015.

4.3.3 Bushings
Bushings should be unpacked and cleaned.
Blank flanges on the transformer bushings shall be removed and the bushings shall be
installed.
Maximum precautions should be taken in order to avoid any particles falling down into the
transformer.
Arching horns (if provided) shall be mounted and aligned.
At outdoor installations HV bushings should be fitted only during fair weather conditions,
after mounting of all pipes, oil conservator supports and oil conservators so as to avoid
damage.
4.3.4 Oil Filling
The transformer and OLTC should be filled with oil in accordance to instruction N 2124 0014
“Oil-filling to Transformers under Vacuum (Transported Without Oil)” or instruction
N 2124 0015 “Oil filling to Transformers with Conservator Aircell Inside” or instruction N2124
0033 “Filling Partly-Full Transformers with Oil”.
Take an oil sample and test it. Oil sample will be taken after completing air filling. The oil
must have a dielectric strength ≥ 50 kV / 2.5 mm according to VDE-370. Test results below
accepted level should be purified until requested level is reached.
5. RESPONSIBILITY
The contractor, customer or SCHNEIDER team is responsible for the erection of transformers at
site.

The tank and cooling system, if provided, must be earthed on at least one earthing screw with
adequate conductor cross-section.
Check the blocking elements of transformers mounted on wheels. Fit and check the holding-
down bolts, if provided, on skidded transformers.
Check the position of the slide valves, three-way and butterfly valves in accordance with the
instruction plate, if provided.
The oil levels in the conservator or transformer tank must be checked on the gauges.
4.5. Ventilation
All vents provided should be opened until oil comes out without air-bubbles and then closed
again tightly.

Check the tank, bushings and cooling system for oil leakage.
Dehydrating breathers must be filled new silica gel. Make sure the breather(s) operate(s)
properly. The oil level in the oil pot should be checked.
Check the operating positions, position locks and end stops. The tap changer function should
be checked under de-energized conditions.
Set the spark gaps in accordance to the dimension drawing and the applicable specifications,
e.g. IEC 60076-3. Larger gaps are required for transformers installed at altitudes above 1000
m.
If the transformer terminals are protected by lightning arresters, spark gaps are not required. If
they are used nevertheless, they should be set as stated above or a larger gap should be
selected.
4.11. Ratio Measurement for Checking the Proper Function of Tap Changer
This measurement is not only required to check the tap changing gear (off-circuit tap changer)
for proper functioning after transport and installation of the transformer but also the coupling
between the motor drive and the tap changing mechanism. For further information, see tap
changer manual.

The insulation resistance is measured to determine serious mistakes made during installation
or damages during transport. The results depend upon various factors, e.g. moisture,
cleanliness of the bushings, temperature.
Make sure the Buchholz relay has been properly installed. The arrow on the housing must
show the direction of the conservator.
The alarm and tripping floats proper functioning should be checked.
When the operating pressure is exceeded, the switch of the pressure relief device operates.
A protective relay is fitted in the pipe connected to the diverter switch oil conservator. The relay
operates in response of the oil flowing in the direction of the conservator.( 1.5 and 2.2 m/s). It
should be checked for the proper mounting position. The arrow on the housing must show the
direction of the conservator.
When the protective units of the diverter switch operate, the transformer must be switched off.
It is not permitted to set the units to give an alarm only.
The protective devices should be checked in accordance with the individual descriptions.
The tripping elements of the protective devices remain in the operating position and must be
reset when the tests are finished.
Check for proper functioning. The device must be connected to “Tripping” signal.
Check the oil level device for proper functioning by actuating their signaling contacts at
minimum and maximum positions.
4.17.1 Fans
4.17.2 Pumps
Proper installation of the oil pumps should be checked by reference to the arrows on the
housing. The direction of oil flow is as follows :
- Hot oil from the top of the tank to the cooler.
- Cooled oil from the cooler to the tank bottom.
- Regarding pumps with gauge, the direction of the arrow.
The correct direction of rotation by pumps without gauge can be tested by changing two
phases. When the direction of rotation is incorrect, pump operates noisy.
Check the alarm and tripping of thermometers. For temperature dependent control of fan
groups, check whether fans are starting and stopping at correct temperature.
4.23. Painting
It is absolutely necessary to check the breakdown voltage of the oil by an accepted method
when installation works is completed or latest, before the transformer is energized.
Check proper installation of the oil flow monitors by reference to the arrows provided.
Check the contact making function of the water flow monitors (care should be taken at
temperature below zero.
5. COMMISSIONING
When all checks have been completed, the transformers can be put in service.
Transformers with off-circuit tap changer should be energized at correct tap position.
Transformers with on-load tap changer; as it may be possible that the transformer is switched
off immediately after startup due to protective devices (e.g. differential, over-current relays,
etc.) switching on should be initiated at the lowest possible induction, i.e. at the highest number
of turns on the high-voltage side to be switched, by setting the on-load tap changer accordingly.
If a protective device operates, the transformer should only be switched on again after the
cause of the fault has been cleared in order to keep the number of no-load switching
operations to a minimum.
After the first startup, the transformer should be checked for abnormal noise (vibrating fittings,
corona discharge of bushings and live parts)
