1. OBJECTIVE
Oil and gas filling to transformer with conservator sealed with aircell.

2. SCOPE
Distribution and Medium Power Transformers final assembly and assembling in the site area.

3. CONCEPTS

4. PROCEDURE
If the transformer voltage is higher than 62,5 kV, oil filling should be done under vacuum.

4.1 Oil Filling to Radiators


Following process will be repeated for each radiator group after assembly.
Install conservator dehydrating breather (AT001).
Open aircell pressure equalizing valve (AA345).
Fill oil by means of conservator drain valve (AA145) up to sight glass (CL069). Wait 15
minutes before opening the valve AA200 to allow air bubbles will disappear.
Slowly open AA200 and watch oil flow from buchholz relay (CF050).
Open air vent plug on radiator (AB600)
Open the air vent plug on radiator (AB600).
Slowly open top butterfly valve (AB230, Top). Oil will flow to radiators and air will escape
from the air vent plug (AB600).
Keep the oil level in the conservator above minimum level of CL060 during entire filling
operation of radiators to prevent air ingress. If oil level drops to minimum level, stop oil
filling process by closing AA200. Restart to filling process at the beginning.
When oil reaches to air vent plug (AB600), close the plug, seal with cap nut and washer.
Open bottom butterfly valve (AB230, bottom).
Oil level should be on top position of sight glass (CL069) when oil filling process of
radiators are finished.
Close valve AA145 and AA345.

4.2 Gas Filling to Air Cell

Replace maintank dehydrating breather (AT001) with nitrogen gas tube.


Close valve between tank and conservator (AA200).
Close conservator pressure equalizing valve (AA349) if available.
Open maintank air vent of conservator (AB005).
Fill aircell with nitrogen from gas tube until inside pressure of cell is equal to 10 kPa
(0,1 bar). Oil has to come out from AB005 at this pressure. If it does not, add some
more amount of oil from AA145. At the end of process, maximum gas pressure inside
cell must be equal to 0,1 bar.
Close AB005 and open AA200 (valve between tank and conservator).
Replace nitrogen gas tube with maintank dehydrating breather (AT001).

1. OBJECTIVE
Transformers without oil and filled with nitrogen gas, will be filled with oil under vacuum after
mounting.

2. SCOPE

3. PROCEDURE

3.1. Vacuum Periods Related to Voltage:

3.2. Oil - Filling:


Oil is filled to the transformer from upper tank valve by oil treatment machine
Filling velocity is adjusted just as the vacuum in the tank will be fixed.
Oil breakdown voltage > 50 kV / 2.5 mm VDE 0370
Gas proportion in oil <2%
Oil temperature ≥70 °C ≤85 °C

Vacuum is applied to the transformer for two hours more and vacuum of the transformer will be
removed by nitrogen or dry air.

3.3 Still Stand Period:


The transformer is set to still stand during the period after completing the air filling taking into
service.

1. APPLICATION

The function of dehydrating breather produced by following DIN 42567 and DIN 42562 standards
is to remove the moisture of air flowing to conservator during the cooling of transformer. Thus
weakened strength of oil dielectric breakdown due to moisture and water condensation in
conservator can be avoided. Dehydrating breathers extend the lifetime of transformers and make
them operate in safer conditions.

Type: L DIN 42562 Type: A DIN 42567

Dehydrating breather with capacity 0.5-1 kg are produced by following DIN 42567,
and ones with capacity 1-2-3 kg are produced by following DIN 42562 standards.

2. DEHYDRATING BREATHER OF “A DIN 42567”


A dehydrating breather appropriate to DIN 42567 is composed of a glass cylinder (7) filled with
dryer granules, top section (1) above the cylinder, intermediate section (3), one stud bolt (8), nut
(12) and two plugs (9). Oil bowl (4) which is filled with oil up to a marked level is placed under
dehydrating breather. The oil dryer prevents continuous contact of granulates with outside damp
air, and it cleans the air flowing inside.
When oil temperature drops in transformer volume of oil becomes smaller, as a result of this some
amount of air would be absorbed indoor through holes of intermediate section (3). Here the
function of sieve (6) is to prevent entering of big dusts and insects. When air flows toward
conservator it passes first through oil and then dryer granules, so that moisture of the air could be
hindered.
When insulating oil in transformer tank is heated, air goes out from conservator by flowing in
opposite direction through air dryer.

2.1. Mounting
Round flange at the end of the upper pipe shall be connected air tightly to counter flange on
conservator with two M12 bolts.

2.2. Filling
Bind fuse (11) shall be opened and glass cylinder is filled with fresh dryer granulates from there.
After filling dismantled oil bowl (4) with new transformer oil, it shall be connected to dehydrating
breather by holder (5).

3. DEHYDRATING BREATHER OF “L DIN 42562”


The type L DIN 42562 dehydrating breather comprises several identical chambers bolted together
to form an airtight unit. The number of chambers used depends on the air humidity at the place
where the transformer is installed and also on the expected throughput of air. Hence the size of
the dehydrating breather is related to size or load cycle of the transformer.
Each chamber consists of a glass cylinder (6) filled with drying granulates, cover (2;3) with gasket,
intermediate plate (1) and bolts for the fixing. At each intermediate cover (2) there are 3 pivoted
eyebolts with wing nuts (9) which make an airtight joint to the upper chamber. The topmost
chamber is closed by the cover (3) whose 3 eyebolts and wing nuts (8) secure the whole
dehydrating breather to the flange (5).
The bottom of the breather is closed by the glass vessel (7) which is filled with oil to the mark. The
oil in this vessel prevents the drying granulates being in continuous contact with the damp
atmosphere and also filters the inflowing air. When oil temperature drops in transformer volume of
oil becomes smaller, as a result of this some amount of air would be absorbed indoor through
holes in the bottom ring (4). Here the function of the inner sieve is to prevent entering of big dusts
and insects. On its way to the conservator the air passes through the oil trap and subsequently
through the drying granulates which remove the moisture from it.
When insulating oil in transformer tank is heated, air goes out from conservator by flowing in
opposite direction through air dryer.

3.1. Montage
Normally the L DIN 42562 type dehydrating breather is supplied completely, with oil vessel (7),
packed and ready for mounting. The dehydrating breather must be mounted on to the transformer
before the transformer is put into service. For this, following work must be carried out on site:
Ensure that the breathing pipe and the gaskets are clean and dry.
Round flange at the end of the upper pipe shall be connected air tightly to counter flange on
conservator with bolts. Secure the bottom end of the pipe to the transformer tank by means of the
clip just above the triangular flange (5) welded to the pipe end.
3.2. Filling
Check that each glass cylinder (6) is securely assembled with appropriate cover (3) or
intermediate cover (2) and intermediate plate 1. Sealing rings must produce an airtight joint
and also the hexagonal bolts must be tight. Then fill the chambers with fresh drying granulates
through the holes in the cover/intermediate cover.

3.3. Assembly
When attaching the topmost chamber to the flange (5) and when joining two chambers together,
do not tighten the wing nuts (8;9) one-sidedly otherwise there is a danger of breaking the glass
cylinder. Fill the removed glass vessel (7) to the mark with new transformer oil, assemble it to the
bottom chamber and tighten it with the wing nuts to the above chamber.

4. VALID FOR BOTH TYPES

4.1. Test
After mounting of the dehydrating breather check whether it works properly. For this operation air
is pumped into the Buchholz relay. As a result of it a fluctuation occurs both on the surface of oil
bowl (4) and within dryer granulates in glass cylinder. Otherwise it indicates a stagnation has been
occurred in pipe connection of conservator with Buchholz relay or specifically in conservator, and
it should be removed at once.

4.2. Functional Control of Dehydrating Breathers


The rising air bubbles are signs of proper operation of dehydrating breather as insulating oil
temperature changes in transformer tank. A white color advancing from bottom to top through
dehydrating breather also shows that dehydrating breather is working properly.

4.3. Renewing of Dryer Granulates


Dryer granulates in dehydrating breather should be renewed periodically in order to prevent
moisture entering into conservator. If the depth of original color of dryer granulates at the top of
the dehydrating breather is 7 mm it is time to change the granulates.
For this, firstly oil bowl (4) should be dismantled to avoid an oil drop into glass cylinder since that
makes all granulates unusable. The all parts of dehydrating breather shall be dismantled, dryer
granulates are taken out and sieve sheet is cleaned with pressured air.

1. GENERAL
These instructions describe the fitting and filling of radiators and also their draining and removal.

2. SHIPMENT
Radiators that have been removed from the transformer for shipment are delivered fitted with blank
flanges or plastic plugs to render them airtight. Sometimes the radiators are bolted together at the
flanges for the same purpose. The butterfly valves on the sides of the tank are turned to the off
position for shipment and sealed with blank flanges. (Fig. 1, Items 1 and 2).

3. PREPARATIONS FOR INSTALLATION


Before fitting the radiators check them for any damage.
Remove the blank flanges or plastic plugs from the radiators and ensure that the connections are in
good condition, clean and free from moisture.
Check to see that the gaskets, screws and caps of the ventilation and oil drain plugs are properly
closed.
If any moisture or dirt is found in the radiators it must be flushed out with hot oil at approximately
70°C and protected to prevent any further ingress o f moisture.
Check the connections of the butterfly valves on the transformer after removing the blank flanges.
The butterfly valves should remain closed.

4. FITTING THE RADIATORS


If necessary, clean all sealing surfaces on the radiator of the transformer. O-ring gaskets already
exist on butterfly valves and there is no need to change or install additional gasket.
Lift the radiators with the rope attached to the lifting eye. Fit the top and bottom flanges uniformly
and simultaneously, tightening the bolts evenly in a diagonally opposite sequence in order to obtain
a good seal. Employ this method for fitting all the radiators.
Attention! When fitting the radiators the butterfly valves (1) and (2) shown in Fig. 1 must remain
closed. Cooling fins bend easily; therefore installation should be done carefully. The valves close in
a clockwise direction and open anti-clockwise.

4.1. Oil Filling to Radiators

4.1.1. Transformer with Completely Empty Tank


Open all butterfly valves and fill the transformer tank in accordance with the instruction N2124 0014
“Oil-filling to Transformers under Vacuum (Transported Without Oil)”

4.1.2. Transformer with Partly-Full Tank


Fill the transformers in accordance with the relevant instructions N2124 0033 “Filling partly-full
transformers with oil”.

1. OBJECTIVE
Directions for field mounting and mounting principles of transformers.

2. SCOPE
The mounting works of transformers are described in this section.

3. CONCEPTS
The stages of mounting are given in the below procedure.

4. PROCEDURE
4.1 Transport
Generally large sized transformers are transported without or partly with bushings, conservator,
radiators, fans, pipes accessories, radiator support, bushing domes, etc.
The oil in tank is either lowered or completely drained off; afterwards the tank is filled with dried
nitrogen. The drained oil is transported in barrels or with special oil trucks to the site.
SCHNEIDER should be informed immediately, if any damages occur during transport. The
accessories and insulating materials should be protected from moisture until the end of
commencement of mounting works.
4.2 Erection
Followings are performed at site.
The transformer is transported to the place of erection and the main body is adjusted to be
parallel to the ground.
The wheels (if provided) are mounted on to the transformer.
At least two of the wheels are fixed with brakes (if provided).
4.3 Erection Works
Below parts, which may be dismantled for transportation shall be assembled. After erection has
been completed, any damaged paint should be touched-up.
Attention!
During mounting active part should be avoided from getting exposed to air as much as
possible.
4.3.1 Cooling System
Mounting of radiators (see N2124 0007).
Mounting of cooling fans.
4.3.2 Conservator (if any)
Conservator should be mounted.
Pipes, buchholz relay, valves etc. should be unpacked, cleaned and mounted.
The mounting of conservator with air cell should be done according to instruction N 2124 0015.

4.3.3 Bushings
Bushings should be unpacked and cleaned.
Blank flanges on the transformer bushings shall be removed and the bushings shall be
installed.
Maximum precautions should be taken in order to avoid any particles falling down into the
transformer.
Arching horns (if provided) shall be mounted and aligned.
At outdoor installations HV bushings should be fitted only during fair weather conditions,
after mounting of all pipes, oil conservator supports and oil conservators so as to avoid
damage.
4.3.4 Oil Filling
The transformer and OLTC should be filled with oil in accordance to instruction N 2124 0014
“Oil-filling to Transformers under Vacuum (Transported Without Oil)” or instruction
N 2124 0015 “Oil filling to Transformers with Conservator Aircell Inside” or instruction N2124
0033 “Filling Partly-Full Transformers with Oil”.
Take an oil sample and test it. Oil sample will be taken after completing air filling. The oil
must have a dielectric strength ≥ 50 kV / 2.5 mm according to VDE-370. Test results below
accepted level should be purified until requested level is reached.

4.3.5 Wiring of Fans (if provided) and Protection Devices


All connections of accessories and protection devices shall be wired and checked.

5. RESPONSIBILITY
The contractor, customer or SCHNEIDER team is responsible for the erection of transformers at
site.

1. OBJECTIVE

This norms defines basic subjects for proper commissioning of a transformer.

2. SCOPE

Distribution and Medium Power Transformers.

3. CONCEPTS

It is advised to have transformers to be commissioned by SCHNEIDER specialists.


The values will be recorded to the Commissioning Certificate. A copy of this should be returned
to “SCHNEIDER Enerji Endüstrisi A.Ş.” factory.
No warranty will be given for damage caused by improper commissioning of transformers.
Before transformers and reactors are put into service, make sure that they have been properly
installed and their protection and monitoring devices are functioning.
The tests on transformers and their protective devices specified in commissioning report should
be carried out as suited for the particular consignment. This also applies to any additional
protective devices or parts of the consignment which are not included in the report form.
Tests carried out should be marked with a cross and the result noted down. If transformer is
not put into service immediately after installation, a “preliminary test” should be made and the
result should be entered to Commissioning Certificate.

4. PROCEDURE

4.1. Earthing (protective grounding)

The tank and cooling system, if provided, must be earthed on at least one earthing screw with
adequate conductor cross-section.

4.2. Anchoring and Wheel Brakes

Check the blocking elements of transformers mounted on wheels. Fit and check the holding-
down bolts, if provided, on skidded transformers.

4.3. Position of Valves

Check the position of the slide valves, three-way and butterfly valves in accordance with the
instruction plate, if provided.

4.4. Oil Level Indicator

The oil levels in the conservator or transformer tank must be checked on the gauges.

4.5. Ventilation

All vents provided should be opened until oil comes out without air-bubbles and then closed
again tightly.

4.5.1. Vent Plugs

4.6. Leakage Test

Check the tank, bushings and cooling system for oil leakage.

4.7. Dehydrating Breathers

Dehydrating breathers must be filled new silica gel. Make sure the breather(s) operate(s)
properly. The oil level in the oil pot should be checked.

4.8. Motor Drive and On-load Tap Changer (O.L.T.C.)

(See operating instructions in the Handbook for on-load tap changer)


The proper functioning of heater in control cubicle should be checked.
Make sure the directional change of the tap changer coincides with the step indicator (checking
the direction of rotation). The taps can be brought to the end position electrically after the ratio
has been measured and the motor drive checked for proper coupling with the tap changing
gear. Before this is done, the hand-crank should be used when the hand-crank has been
inserted; electrical operation of the motor drive must no longer be possible.

4.9. Off-Circuit Tap Changer

Check the operating positions, position locks and end stops. The tap changer function should
be checked under de-energized conditions.

4.10. Bushing Arching Horn Spark Gaps

Set the spark gaps in accordance to the dimension drawing and the applicable specifications,
e.g. IEC 60076-3. Larger gaps are required for transformers installed at altitudes above 1000
m.
If the transformer terminals are protected by lightning arresters, spark gaps are not required. If
they are used nevertheless, they should be set as stated above or a larger gap should be
selected.

4.11. Ratio Measurement for Checking the Proper Function of Tap Changer

This measurement is not only required to check the tap changing gear (off-circuit tap changer)
for proper functioning after transport and installation of the transformer but also the coupling
between the motor drive and the tap changing mechanism. For further information, see tap
changer manual.

4.12. Insulation Resistance

The insulation resistance is measured to determine serious mistakes made during installation
or damages during transport. The results depend upon various factors, e.g. moisture,
cleanliness of the bushings, temperature.

4.13. Buchholz Relay

Make sure the Buchholz relay has been properly installed. The arrow on the housing must
show the direction of the conservator.
The alarm and tripping floats proper functioning should be checked.

4.14. Diverter Switch Protective Relay

When the operating pressure is exceeded, the switch of the pressure relief device operates.
A protective relay is fitted in the pipe connected to the diverter switch oil conservator. The relay
operates in response of the oil flowing in the direction of the conservator.( 1.5 and 2.2 m/s). It
should be checked for the proper mounting position. The arrow on the housing must show the
direction of the conservator.
When the protective units of the diverter switch operate, the transformer must be switched off.
It is not permitted to set the units to give an alarm only.
The protective devices should be checked in accordance with the individual descriptions.
The tripping elements of the protective devices remain in the operating position and must be
reset when the tests are finished.

4.15. Pressure Relief Device for Transformer Tank

Check for proper functioning. The device must be connected to “Tripping” signal.

4.16. Oil Level Device with Contact

Check the oil level device for proper functioning by actuating their signaling contacts at
minimum and maximum positions.

4.17. Direction of Rotation of Pumps and Fans

4.17.1 Fans

The direction of rotation must be as indicated on the fans.

4.17.2 Pumps

Proper installation of the oil pumps should be checked by reference to the arrows on the
housing. The direction of oil flow is as follows :
- Hot oil from the top of the tank to the cooler.
- Cooled oil from the cooler to the tank bottom.
- Regarding pumps with gauge, the direction of the arrow.
The correct direction of rotation by pumps without gauge can be tested by changing two
phases. When the direction of rotation is incorrect, pump operates noisy.

4.17. Control Cubicle Heater

Check the heater for proper functioning.

4.18. Current Transformer

It must either be connected to measuring instruments or short-circuited.


Each secondary winding of the transformers should be earthed at one terminal as shown in the
circuit diagram.

4.20.21.22. Temperature Monitoring and Fan Control

Check the alarm and tripping of thermometers. For temperature dependent control of fan
groups, check whether fans are starting and stopping at correct temperature.

4.23. Painting

Check the paint of transformer after complete assembly. Touch-up if necessary.

4.24. Oil Quality

It is absolutely necessary to check the breakdown voltage of the oil by an accepted method
when installation works is completed or latest, before the transformer is energized.

4.25. Oil Flow Monitors

Check proper installation of the oil flow monitors by reference to the arrows provided.

4.26. Water Flow Monitors

Check the contact making function of the water flow monitors (care should be taken at
temperature below zero.

5. COMMISSIONING

When all checks have been completed, the transformers can be put in service.

Transformers with off-circuit tap changer should be energized at correct tap position.

Transformers with on-load tap changer; as it may be possible that the transformer is switched
off immediately after startup due to protective devices (e.g. differential, over-current relays,
etc.) switching on should be initiated at the lowest possible induction, i.e. at the highest number
of turns on the high-voltage side to be switched, by setting the on-load tap changer accordingly.
If a protective device operates, the transformer should only be switched on again after the
cause of the fault has been cleared in order to keep the number of no-load switching
operations to a minimum.

After the first startup, the transformer should be checked for abnormal noise (vibrating fittings,
corona discharge of bushings and live parts)
