COLONIALISM AND THE USE OF NEUROSCIENCE AND BRAIN-BASED

STRATEGIES
The part which the Philippine History that tackles about the Colonialism is very
lengthy to teach. It is said that one of students says that it is boring. Yes but that is
depends on the strategy of teaching. There are strategies that can be applied when it
comes to colonial Philippines.

First is we can use set of emotions like using emotional faces, ( HAPPY or SAD)
when doing the Alternate Response. By that, if the students agree to the situation, he will
raise the face happy, or sad if it is not. There we can see that students are being engage
in choosing what should we felt when we are in a situation in a colonial setting.

The another strategy that we can use to is the brainstorming and differentiated
activity. By that, students can engage in different setting, appreciating different themes of
learning and activity like Role playing, slogan making, reporting or other scenarios. Let
the students decide which instruction they want to show to the class.

Aside from that, brain based strategies like engaging the students in physical
activities related to Social studies may tap their interest in doing the task work in every
lesson. Then after that, make a challenging activities or set of task that will ensure their
learning will be deepened, let them immersed maybe in the school or even in the
community.

With regards in the teaching of colonialism, we can engage students by using

technology, letting them to watch short but meaningful video clips, then explain it to them
how that happened and what are the reasons. There they`ll have an idea of what`s going
on those days and might influence them to learn more of a certain event in history. By
helping them to imagine what`s in the past will affect their perspective on that situation.

But the one thing it is most important is to teach them the application. Explaining
to them that we are a society like this because this what happened before. By realizing
that History can be a tool to correct our misdoings before, can help us to progress. By
using history to be the reflection can be a positive use of teaching social studies, to
empower students to become a progressive and responsible thinker.
