Abstract
This research is motivated by the declaration of the United States (US) stating
that Venezuela was a threat on March 10, 2015. This research is exploratory and
uses a qualitative approach with case studies strategy. This research will use the
methods of data collection by interview and documentation. The process of
analysis in this study is inductive. This study aims to reveal the motives behind the
US antagonism toward Venezuela by using the perspective of world system theory.
The theory is used to explain the behavior and attitudes of a particular actor. In
addition, this study will analyze the pattern of relaton between both countries with
geopolitical and analyze US involvement in Venezuela with subversive approach.
This declaration follows a rash of arrests of opposition politicians in Venezuela.
The US then gave sanction which resulted in some officials Venezuelan assets,
such as property and other instruments that were frozen in the US. Statement of
US that in fact has large influential in the world, will result in the bad image of
Venezuela. In contrary, the value of liberal and democracy that have been
accepted by the opposition, will be viewed as a better option in Venezuela.
Especially with a number of private media that have been controlled by the
oligarchs (the opposition) always state a news against government in Venezuela.
In geopolitical view, Venezuela is a rich country in oil and one of the main oil
importer to the US. Under the government of Chavez and Maduro, Venezuela-US
relations has been deteriorated, as Chavez applied anti-liberal policies. Therefore,
it is important for the US to intervene in Venezuela. Seeing those realities,
comparing power of both countries, Venezuela has nothing destructive that could
threaten the US. Therefore, in this research, the authors wants to uncover the
original motives of the US confrontational stance toward Venezuela, including the
motives behind the threat declaration of US toward Venezuela in March 2015.
