ED 345 Calvin College Teacher Intern Lesson Plan Template #2

Teacher Intern: Annie Kim Date: March 21 Mentor Teacher: Yanbo Chen
Grade Level: 2nd Subject/ Topic: Math- graphs
Approx. time spent planning this lesson: 2h
DOMAIN 1: PLANNING & PREPARATION
Main Focus/Essential Questions:
The main focus of this lesson is to observe and make a conclusion and comparison by analyzing the data graph.
Brief Context:
Students will learn how to record their measurement and make precise conclusion. Students will be able to make clear
and visual comparison among different objects in one glance by looking at the graph.
Prerequisite Knowledge/Skills:
Measuring skill, writing skill, critical thinking, drawing skill
Lesson Objectives/Learning Targets Aligned Assessments
The learner will: I will assess learning by:
1. Be able to gather data and record them on a 1. Students’ worksheet
table and graph. 2. Students’ worksheet and their ability to answer word
2. Be able to make at least 2 problems during the whole group lesson.
observation/conclusion and be able to answer
questions about the graph.

Standards Addressed:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.9: generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objec
ts to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measure
ments by making a line plot where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole number units.
Instructional Resources and Materials:
Worksheet, textbook, whiteboard, projector
Consideration of Learners:
Representation: I will provide visual graph where all students can see. I will have structured worksheets for students to do.
I would need to go over expectations and briefly show them a good example.
Engagement: All students will be engaged as they will gather information of the class and create their own data graph.

Individual Accommodations:
For students who need help in writing Chinese sentences, write sample sentences on the white board for them to copy
from. Write down different sentence starters that are in different level. Encourage students from high ceiling to choose
sentences that are little difficult.
DOMAIN 2: THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT
Covenant Management:
To build a safe learning community, students will respect other students and teacher by listening carefully. We are going
wait for others and help them if they need more support.
Conduct Management
Whole group attention strategies: boys vs. girls, ask for volunteers who are sitting down quietly and paying
attention
Individual student redirection strategies: call on names, go closer to them,
Content Management:
When students are going around the classroom to gather information from their peers, limit their time to 10
minutes. Set up a timer. When the time is up, they will stop and start completing the worksheet. Also, give
specific numbers of people they would gather information from (which is 10) to reduce the confusion.
Physical Environment:
Students will be sitting on the carpet, then move around the classroom during individual activity.
DOMAIN 3: INSTRUCTION- [Content Management]
Motivation/Opening/Intro:
 Graph on p.829. Look for volunteers to come up and finish the table based on the problem.
 When the table is completed, write down two observations made by the whole group. What is this graph telling
us? What kind of information can we get just by looking at this graph? Learning objective: when we are looking at
the graph data, we need to carefully compare and contrast information recorded on the graph. We can easily
identify various observations and make different conclusions based on the numbers.
 Go through problems #3-7 on p. 829 (This help students to recognize key words when solving the word problems.
This need more scaffolds as students are having a hard time reading/understanding Chinese word problems.
We’ve been practicing finding key words to understand the word problems this week. Go step by step.)
Development:
 Student Activity+ worksheet
 Instructions: Students choose one topic from the list (favorite days of the week, favorite color, favorite animals)
to gather data for. They need to choose four different options for chosen topic (for example, blue, red, orange,
and purple are four choices/options they can have for “favorite color” topic). They will get information from 10
people. Then, they will create a bar graph for their own data. They will write two observations according to their
graph. The examples of questions/observations are written on the board.
Closure:
 If we have time, students will gather at the carpet to share their data graph. If not, they will clean up
and get ready for Chinese class.
DOMAIN #4: PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Reflection after teaching the lesson:
Students were very engaged when they had a chance to actually do something such as voting for the first graph done as a
whole group or making their own table to gather information from other students. Students were managed well when
they were walking around the classroom to ask questions to their peers. However, students were having a hard time
writing down two observations or conclusions of the graph. I should have taken more time making those comparisons as a
large group. Asking a lot of detailed comparing questions will help them.
