Engineering Surveying coursework assignment 2018/19

Below is your written brief. Ensure that you read this brief carefully and follow precisely any instructions shown.

1. Many of the pairs/groups were chosen by yourselves – the remainder have been allocated by me due to lack of
response from the students concerned. Should you be left with an elusive partner with whom you cannot make
contact, please let me know asap.

2. Both/all students in a pair/group are to work through the entire assignment individually and
independently, only comparing answers at the end. You should then investigate the cause of any differences
between you, and re-compute as necessary. This procedure minimises the chances of you both making the
same mistake of logic or arithmetic, while the independent check improves the likelihood that your answers
will be correct, which is especially important in your chosen industry and also in view of 5 below.

3. Each pair/group is to submit ONE set of agreed answers on the attached answer sheets.

4. Each pair/group is to attach to the answer sheets BOTH/ALL STUDENTS’ sets of working from which those
answers have been taken, with each set being clearly named. The working may be hand-written or computer-
printed, but must be legible, neat, tidy, illustrated by large, clear diagrams where appropriate and logically laid-
out, with each calculation step clearly headed/explained, otherwise marks will be lost as you will not have
demonstrated achievement of one of the module learning outcomes.

5. In industry, you get no credit for your setting-out being in the wrong place, or simply being wrong. The calculation
method for each section of this assignment is clearly explained, with fully-worked examples, in the course notes,
presentations and/or worked solutions to previous assignments and previous contract drawings calculations tests,
all available on NOW. Few marks will be given for method alone: you have to have the method correct and be
able to type numbers into your calculator correctly. Some credit for method will be given (unlike in industry)
where the final answers are wrong due to a single numeric or process error made at a particular point in the
question with the method for the rest of the working being correct. In any case, you will receive formative
feedback throughout.

6. Since few marks will be awarded for method, you need to take great care to ensure the correctness of your answers,
as, for example, a mistake in calculating the length LT of the transition curve in part a of Q4 would necessarily
mean that you would lose some of the 30 marks for Q4, regardless of whether the rest of the working was correct,
since some of the answers for that question depend on the value of LT.

7. If any calculations have been carried out on Excel, your spreadsheet must be submitted via the appropriate NOW
module Dropbox (with a filename of SurnameUsername, e.g. SargentN000000) by the specified submission date.
The spreadsheet must also be logically laid-out and neatly presented with appropriate identification of each stage
of calculation. Note: unless (or even if) your Excel skills are extremely good, it is quicker to compute this
assignment using a calculator.

8. No marks will be awarded, even for correct answers, without the supporting calculations or spreadsheet
being submitted as detailed above.

9. The student with maximum involvement in the calculations should show '% Contribution' as 100% on the Answer
Sheet. A student with equal involvement should also show 100%. Anyone who has not contributed fully should
show an appropriately reduced percentage (as agreed by the pair/whole group). 100% gets the full mark merited
by the answers on the Answer Sheet; other percentages get an appropriately factored mark.

10. The working attached to the answer sheets will not necessarily be marked or annotated for both/all students in the
group, but will be for at least one. As well as being used to locate any errors in your calculations and as a vehicle
for feedback, the working is required as evidence that the work is that of the students of the group. Any evidence
of collusion either in written solutions or through use of spreadsheets shared between groups will be treated very
seriously, with those involved (providers as well as copiers) being reported for poor academic practice as a
minimum, or for an academic irregularity, which can have very serious consequences.

Submission
Cover sheet, one set of answer sheets, both/all students’ supporting calculations (corner stapled in that order) per
group via the coursework box, plus spreadsheet(s) (if appropriate) via module dropbox, to be submitted by 0845 on
the day specified on the front cover of this brief. Please do NOT submit your work bound into any form of folder,
nor in plastic wallets.
Please note: this is the final deadline time/date, not the time and date at which you must submit – you may submit at
any time/date before this, and you are strongly advised not to leave this work to the last minute! This assignment
contributes a maximum of 26% to the module (both Int Eng Apps and Eng Skills as appropriate.)

Q1. Working from tangent point TP9 (Ch1357.243), calculate the co-ordinates of Chainage
1550.000. (2 marks)

Q2. Working from tangent point TP9 (Ch1357.243), calculate the chainage and offset of MH12 from the
design line. N.B. The position of the manhole shown in the figure is indicative only – it may lie either
side of the design line according to your data. (3 marks)

Q3. Using the co-ordinates of survey control station (Stn) CW16 in Figure A and of CW19 in the table,
calculate:
a. the distance and bearing from Stn CW16 to Stn CW19 (2 marks)
b. the distance and bearing from Stn CW16 to MH12. (2 marks)

Q4. Given the data values shown for Q4 in the table, calculate the following (referring to pages 10 & 11
in the Transition Curve notes on NOW or slides of the presentation):
a. length LT of the transition curve TSSC (TP10TP11) (2 marks)
b. shift S (1 mark)
c. tangent point displacement C (1 mark)
d. tangent length of the composite curve (2 marks)
e. deflection angle φmax for the transition curve, in degrees, minutes, seconds (2 marks)
f. angle θ turned through by the circular curve, in degrees, minutes, seconds (2 marks)
g. arc length of the circular curve (2 marks)
h. chainage of the tangent points TS, SC, CS, ST (TPs 10-13 respectively) (4 marks)
i. co-ordinates of TP 10 (TS) (2 marks)
j. transition x and y values for TP11 (SC) (i.e. when l = LT) (4 marks)
k. chord distance, deflection angle and chord bearing for line TS-SC (4 marks)
l. co-ordinates of TP11 (SC) (2 marks)
m. tangential bearing at TP11 (SC) (2 marks)
Total = 30 marks

Q5. Given the data values shown for Q5 in the table and referring to Figures B, C and D, calculate:
a. the co-ordinates and tangential bearing at the bridge setting-out point (SOP) (6 marks)
b. the bearing of the bridge centreline from bridge SOP to West Abutment (3 marks)
c. the co-ordinates of the West Abutment SOP (intersection of bridge centreline and
centreline of bearings) (3 marks)
d. the co-ordinates of the four corners (front left, back left, back right, front right as viewed
from the bridge SOP) of the abutment base (8 marks)
e. the co-ordinates of the back left and back right outside corners of the wingwalls. (5 marks)

For starting data, use the values for TP11(SC) given for Q5 in the table, not the values you
calculated in Q4. Orientation may be significantly different.

Total = 25 marks
Q6.
a. The design alignment has been revised since the survey control stations were established, and
Stn CW22 may now clash with some construction. Given the data values for Q6 in the table,
calculate the chainage and offset of Stn CW22 from the design line. For starting data, use the
values for TP11 (SC) given for Q6 in the table, not the values you calculated in Q4 nor the starting
data given for Q5. (9 marks)

b. Given the same data for TP11 (SC), what would be the co-ordinates of a replacement control
station CW22a at Chainage 1695, offset 25m right? (These provisional co-ordinates are required
in order to set the station out, so that it can be constructed in the required place.) (5 marks)
Total = 14 marks

Q7. Given the data values shown in the table for Q7, calculate (referring to the presentation and notes
on NOW):

a. the chainage at the beginning and end of the parabolic vertical curve (BVC and EVC
respectively), assuming equal tangent lengths (2 marks)
b. the reduced level on the design line at BVC and EVC from the VIP using the gradients
(2 marks)
c. the reduced level on the design line at 20m ‘through’* chainages and at EVC, working from
BVC (10 marks)
d. the checks for the reduced levels found in iii (4 marks)
e. the chainage and reduced level of the high point. (4 marks)

You should check your work by creating an Excel graph showing straight gradients connecting
VIP to both BVC and EVC, and the curve through your calculated levels from BVC to EVC
Total = 22 marks

Note: 20m ‘through’ chainages are multiples of 20m. The first chainage to be calculated on the
vertical curve after BVC is thus the first multiple of 20m to occur; it is not 20m from BVC.

Total = 100 marks
