Introduction

The terms counselor and psychotherapist are used interchangeably that is they share the some
common techniques and have many similarities but there are some important differences as well.
Counselling is recommended for specific issues and situations such as addiction or grief and
takes place over weeks to several months whereas psychotherapy tends to experience past issues
that may be contributing to present day problems and takes place over a period of years. There is
a character in common between the two types of therapies. Psychotherapist can provide
counseling but a counselor cannot conduct psychotherapy sessions for it is only conducted by
professional practitioners. The term counselling may also properly be used to refer to what
occurs in a relationship with a psychotherapist .Counseling is generally used to denote a
relatively brief treatment that is focused primarily on behavior .It often targets a certain symptom
and offers suggestions and advice for dealing with it .Psychotherapy is a long term treatment that
focuses more on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems .It focuses on the
person` thought process and how these may be influenced by past events such they cause
problems in the present. Psychotherapy addresses the root cause and core issues of current
problems so that lasting change and personal growth occurs. Cognitive behavioral therapy
,psychoanalytic psychotherapy can fall under therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a form of
talking therapy which can be used to treat people with wide range of mental health problems.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is an umbrella term for many therapies that share some common
elements. Psychoanalytic therapy is a form of therapy on in depth talk therapy that aims to bring
the unconscious and feelings to the conscious mind so that repressed experiences and emotions,
often from childhood can be brought to the open. There are inter-relationships or similarities
between counselling psychotherapy and even with excellence. Counselling includes some
psychotherapy and psychotherapy also includes counselling. The relationship between
counselling and psychotherapy is that they have some similarities that are development of
healing, safe and therapeutic relationship between a therapist and an individual. Effectiveness for
a wide range of people both adults and children is found in both psychotherapy and
counselling.(2)[put ideas in prgphs]
Both psychotherapy and counselling understands a person`s feelings and behaviors and addresses
issues with the goal of improving a person`s life. However counseling focuses on chronic or
recurrent problems .Psychotherapy deals with overall patterns, big picture oriented and
counseling is a short term therapy which takes a period of weeks and up to 6months and
psychotherapy is a long term therapy either continuous or intermittent over years. Talk therapy is
the one used in counseling and in psychotherapy including testing, talk therapy and other
therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy. If one is having specific issues or short term
problems counseling is a better option that psychotherapy .When looking for someone who can
guide and support you as you learn to recognize problems and formulate healthy solution
counselling is more effective than psychotherapy .A client may cope with past trauma or believe
situations in the past as playing role in his\her current issues opting for a therapist is the best
choice or choice than choosing a counselor. Both counseling and psychotherapy are used in the
treatment of depression and the choice depends on the severity of the depression. As far as the
effectiveness of the two approaches ,a 2016 study found that counseling was just as effective for
the treatment of previously untreated mild to moderate depression diagnosed in primary care.
(2)[valid points]Another 2016 study found that interpersonal psychotherapy was somewhat
more beneficial than counseling in adolescents with depression. Counselling is provided under a
variety of different labels to employ a metaphor from the world of business .Identical approaches
and same approaches are used with both counselling and psychotherapy but are required to use
different titles in response to the demands of the agencies that apply them. The different between
counselling and psychotherapy is that non-professional volunteer workers most conduct
counselling and psychotherapy is an exclusively professional occupation. However ,both
counselling and psychotherapy can be viewed as activities distinct from advice-giving ,caring
and teaching. Counselling and psychotherapy has become known from the within discipline of
psychiatry and has come to be considered as applied sub-branches of the academic discipline of
psychology. Counselling and psychotherapy has been given the status of applied science
because of being designated in psychiatry and psychology. Psychological perspectives are within
counselling practice. Both counselling and psychotherapy have some vital ideas initiated in
philosophy(1)[point] .The concept of the “unconscious “had been used in the nineteenth century
philosophy (Ellen Berger1970) some time before Freud began to use it in his theory .The field of
moral philosophy contributes counselling by offering a framework for making sense of ethical
issues. Counselling and psychotherapy have had strong religious backgrounds and have
attempted to form into one whole the work of the counsellor with the search for spiritual
meaning. Both counselling and psychotherapy have a strong tradition of using methods and
techniques from drama sculpture, dance and the visual arts to enable clients to give expression to
their feelings and relationship patterns .Psychodrama and art therapy have become well
established specialist counselling approaches. Although the field of counselling is permeated
with Judeo-Christian thought and belief there is increasing interest among some counsellors in
the relevance of ideas and practices from other religions such as Zen Buddhism(Suzuki:et
al.1970;Ramaswami and Sheikh 1989).Thorne and Dryden (1993)have edited a collection of
biographical essays written by counsellors on the ways in which they have used early training in
disciplines such as ecology ,theology and anthropology to inform their counselling practice .Both
counselling and psychotherapy represents a formation of ideas from science ,philosophy ,religion
and arts. Counselling and psychotherapy pertains of multiple distinct they bring common
problems. The professional who facilitates counselling and psychotherapy is frequently the same
person(1(validpoint]. Both counselling and psychotherapy have an area that functions in
common. A therapist can provide counselling with certain situation and a counselor can use
psychotherapy in their approach, both terms can be used as synonym. They have same concepts
of personality disorder and change one is the part of another either counselling is a part of
psychotherapy that is psychotherapeutic process occurs counselling, management of problems or
conflicts. They are both congruence that is they basically being genuine and consistent in one`s
thoughts, feelings and actions when interacting with a client. Counselling and psychotherapy
offer safe and confidential space where you can explore what matters to you and both helps
people in the midst of emotional crisis when they feel like they are falling apart and need some
help to manage and cope with life.(2)[good points raised]
