Cardwell, Diane, and Clifford Krauss. "Coal Country's Power Plants are Turning Away from

Coal." New York Times, 27 May. 2017, pp. B. 1. SIRS Issues Researcher,

https://sks.sirs.com.

"Coal is on the defensive in the nation's power industry. Even in coal country. The

pressure to shift more of the country's electric supply to renewable sources is not just a rallying

cry for environmentalists. Some of the power industry's biggest customers, like General Motors

and Microsoft, have made a commitment to clean energy. And to help them meet it -- and keep

them from taking their business elsewhere -- utilities are changing their ways..... This article is

basically saying that the world is trying to convert away from coal and use some other form of

fuel.

Gilmour, Jared. "Will US Partisanship Block a Global Climate Accord?" Christian Science

Monitor, 31 Mar. 2015. SIRS Issues Researcher,https://sks.sirs.com.

In this article an official plan submitted to the United Nations Tuesday [March 31, 2015

President Obama formally promised to cut US greenhouse gas emissions up to 28 percent over

the next 10 years. Obama's pledge is the latest in a series of executive-led efforts to bolster US

climate policy ahead of this December's international talks in Paris--widely seen as a last-ditch

opportunity to foster unified global action to curb heat-trapping emissions....The president

circumvents Congressional opposition by going it alone on domestic and international climate

policy, but he also risks foregoing a more consensus-based approach to global climate efforts.

Johnstone, Bruce. "Clean Coal's Time has Come." Star-Phoenix, 20 Jun. 2015, pp. C.1. SIRS

Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

Clean coal projects...are expected to prove that CCS [carbon capture and storage]

technology not only works, but will become more cost-effective over time. Any subsequent CCS

plant built in Saskatchewan is expected to cost 30 per cent less than the $1.47-billion Boundary

Dam CCS project. Furthermore, converting conventional coal-fired plants to clean coal plants

will reduce our per capita GHG emissions, which are three times the Canadian average and the

highest in the country."

Krauss, Clifford, and Diane Cardwell. "Policy's Promise for Coal Power has its Limits." New

York

Times, 29 Mar. 2017, pp. A. 1. SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

His article talks about how many fossil fuel executives are celebrating President Trump's

move to dismantle the Obama administration's Clean Power Plan. But their cheers are muted,

because market forces and state initiatives continue to elevate coal's rivals, especially natural gas

and renewable energy. Basically saying they have no sa so in what they decide.

historically and presently.

"Abuse of Power; Energy Subsidies in America." Economist, Dec. 2017, pp. 13. SIRS Issues

Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

This textual piece talks about how the government uses the power they have a certain area

to gain an outcome that better benefits them other than it fitting the people. It’s something that has

been happening from the start when the earth had became into exsistence.

Sengupta, Somini. "Coal Endangers A Planet Unable to Stop using it." New York Times, 25 Nov.

2018, pp. A.1. SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

This article talks about how using coal is bringing the planet to the break of destruction

because we use it to much for our own good . It’s something that has become apart of our daily

lives and needs to be brought to the light so that it can be dealt with.

Sengupta, Somini. "In the Air Everywhere You Go, and Taking Weeks Off Your Life." New York

Times, 23 Aug. 2018, pp. A. 10. SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

This paper just explains how air pollution is making us lose days off our life expectancy,

depending on where you live, according to a study published in this paper. Worldwide outdoor air

pollution reduces the average life expectancy at birth by one year. The effect is much more

pronounced in some countries: It cuts the average Egyptian's life span by 1.9 years and the average

Indian's by 1.5 years. In Russia, it's around nine months For the United States.

Shankman, Sabrina. "Premature Birth Rates Drop in California After Coal and Oil Plants.."

This text states how the birth rate drops in california after coal and oil plants are used. It

talks about how if we stop using the coal mines and oil reserves our babies will come out

more healthy and not be premature.

This research paper talks about how we use coal for the most important thing which is

electricity. But we don’t have control over how much is produced and the way that it needs to be

consumed so that we may live better.

"Environmental Protection Racket." New York Times, 14 Oct. 2018, pp. SR. 8. SIRS Issues

Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

This research talks about how If we keep burning coal and petroleum to power our society,

we're cooked -- and a lot faster than we thought. The United Nations scientific panel on climate

change issued a terrifying new warning last week that continued emissions of greenhouse gases

from power plants and vehicles will bring dire and irreversible changes by 2040, years earlier than

previously forecast. The cost will be measured in trillions of dollars and in sweeping societal and

environmental damage, including mass die-off of coral reefs and animal species, flooded

coastlines, intensified droughts, food shortages, mass migrations and deeper poverty.

Tongia, Rahul. "Cleaning Coal Instead of Wishing it Away." The Hindu, 09 Sep. 2015. SIRS

Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

The way this article has been set up for this one .The U.S. and other nations are also

contemplating, if not making, similar choices, driven in part by concerns about climate change.

This view may be impractical, if not myopic, given that at least for India, coal isn't going away

anytime soon. Even with a very high Renewable Energy (RE) future, there will be an inevitable

growth of energy from base-load power sources, which will likely be coal.

The reason that i picked this topic is to inform and relate to this problem that has been

around since the time that we started to use fossil fuels and is now bigger than ever and needs to

be fixed before there is no fixing it.
