The goal of reading comprehension
instruction is to help students understand written
language. Students who comprehend well monitor

their understanding as they read and use fix-up
strategies, such as re-reading or summarizing,
when understanding breaks down. Self-monitoring
also helps students relate new information to their
prior knowledge, fostering better understanding.
However, many adolescents struggle to
comprehend text due to a lack of background
knowledge, an inability to relate content to prior
knowledge, an inability to read text fluently,
difficulty decoding words, an inability to attend to
meaning while reading, an inability to use
comprehension strategies, deficits in
metacognition (often not aware they are not
comprehending), or difficulty understanding the
meanings of words (Boardman et al., 2008;
Pressley, 2006; Reed & Vaughn, 2010).
What do I have in me that could help me
actualize what I had set out to do?
This is definitely a cause for alarm b
ecause if these pupils cannot read properly,
then there is also a big chance they will have
difficulty writing and speaking well. To
address this concern at its very core, the
researcher come up with this research so
these pupils can be trained at the earliest
time possible to read very well. Through
identifying the student’s problem in reading,
the researcher will be able to come up with
an intervention to best enhance their
comprehension level.
What do I have in me that could hinder me
from what I had set to do?
Hence, if a student’s reading comprehension
is poor, chances are his/her performance in
other subjects will be compromised.

Identify the situation in your specific context
In the first quarter of this school year, the
researcher observed that the Grade 7 pupils from
Sections 29 to 34 have difficulty in understanding
their lessons in English. Furthermore,
the researcher noticed that a number of them can
recognize words in printed materials but have
difficulties in answering when asked about the
printed material read. And, at the end of the first
quarter of this school year, this problem on
reading was evidently mirrored in the poor results
of their exams in subjects where English is the
medium of instruction.

This action research aims to determine the
effectiveness of “Project CARE
(Comprehension Achievement through
Reading Enhancement)” to enhance reading
comprehension of selected Grade 7 students
of Muntinlupa National High School, on how
to improve their reading comprehension in
order to achieve 75% of level of mastery
specifically in reading comprehension,
improving their proficiency and vocabulary,
their understanding on the reading
materials, to improve their ability to
understand what they were reading and
able to relate the story they had read.
