SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER

Engines, Systems & Services – Phoenix, Arizona

APPLICABLE: FOR ALL AIRFRAME MANUFACTURERS USING

MAINTENANCE FLIGHT GENERAL AVIATION, GENERAL PRODUCTS
& ENGINEERING OPERATIONS AND/OR AUXILIARY POWER UNITS,
OWNER/OPERATORS, DISTRIBUTORS, SALES
AND SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, AND FIELD
SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES.

Applicable To: 131-9[A] APU

Subject:: The intent of this service information letter is to inform the airlines of a procedure for
establishing or adjusting ratios of 131-9[A] operating hours/cycles to aircraft operating
hours/cycles. This procedure must be established at the airlines operating the 131-9[A]
model APU in case of incorrect/corrupt DMM hours/cycles counting.

Background: Several operators with the 131-9[A] APU configuration installed on their A319/A320/A321
aircraft have experienced corrupted DMM data which includes hours and cycles for a
specific APU serial number. Corrupted data is possible on aircraft operated with the 131-
9[A] APU and the 3888394-120201 VECB. It is identifiable by a DMM display of 65535
which is the maximum number that can be stored as an entry. A modified VECB, part
number 3888394-121202 or 3888394-221202, has been introduced via Honeywell service
bulletin 131-49-7601/7602 however, the issue is not necessarily eliminated with these
VECB’s as loss of hours and cycles can still occur.

Discussion: Should an operator experience corrupted DMM data or incorrect hours and cycles, a means
to determine an approved APU to aircraft ratio to maintain operating hours / cycles for the
purpose of maintenance, reliability, and warranty will be necessary. A means for
determining whether the APU hours and cycles are correct is to compare / check the DMU
versus the CFDS hours / cycles for divergent data. The following is the procedure to follow in
establishing such a ratio:

Conduct a survey on a representative number of A319/A320/A321 aircraft in your fleet

operating over a representative route structure for a period of three (3) months. The number
of aircraft and route structure will vary based on fleet size. This information will provide a
good cross section of data upon which to base the ratio or adjusted ratio. At the completion
of the survey, the data accumulated is to be reviewed and a ratio calculated using the logged
APU time to the actual aircraft time. This procedure must be followed to establish a ratio for
each aircraft type in an operators inventory when it is desired to have a ratio of APU
operating hours / cycles to aircraft hours utilized. Re-evaluation and re-establishment of the
ratio is required upon the introduction of additional aircraft , units or any changes in route
structure / operation which could have an effect on the established ratio.

NOTE: The recording of APU cycles is mandatory for tracking the remaining life of the
131-9[A] APU life limited parts per MPD 49-21-00-Bx-1.
