Dilution
of False
Consensuses
Interview by Danie! Hora.
Once again, the dilution of false consensuses
created by the media is nurturing Mauricio Dios
and Walter Riedweg’s artistic vitality. Following
their strategy of promoting poetic estrange-
ment, the Brazilian and Swiss nationals residing in
Rio de Janeiro are promoting a new encounter
of differences. In the video-installation «Funk
Staden» (2007), especially prepared for the
12® Documenta, the artists reproduce anthro-
pophagy scenes from Brazilian Indians within the
atmosphere of carloca funk balls. The scenes
are found in the imaginative woodcuts that
illustrate o travel book written by German Hans
Staden after visiting recently discovered Brazil
during the 16" Century, when he was nearly
devoured by Tupinambé indians. In activity
since 1993, the duo resumes in «Funk Staden»
certain themes connected to delinquency and
fo the making and unmaking of identities, Issues
that had already been addressed in works
presented in the Sdo Paulo Biennials of 1998
(@Raimundos, Severinos and Franciscos") and
2002 («Beautiful is also that which is Unseen»),
‘as well as in the SGo Paull project Arte Cidade
(alMere Vista Points, 1999-2002) and in the 48"
Venice Biennial («Tutti Venezianis, 1999). From
the Individual exhibitions presented at the
Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona:
(Macba) in 2003 and at Kiasma, Helsink’ (2004),
Dias & Riedweg retook the video-installation
«Maximum Voracity» for Documenta 12, an
edition prepared by a political and contesting
curatorship.
The experience accumulated by Dios &
Riedweg in their works developed with street
children, immigrants, convicts, janitors, street
vendors, male hookers and visually impaired
people are the subject matter of the interview
below. The artists talk about the relationship be-

La 08s begynne denne samialen med videoin-
stallasjonen Funk Staden (2007), som ble laget
for Documenta 12 i Kassel. Her tar dere igjen for
dere kriminalitet og bruker dette temaet til gi
en poetisk fortolkning av den sosiale konteksten
rundt funkfestene i Rio de Janeiro. Hvordan fikk
slummen.
For eksempel

violence, thoroughly contralled by economical
and political powers, and by the medic.
Let us begin our conversation with the video-
installation «Funk Stader» (2007), produced for
the 12 Kassel Documenta, Germany. Once
again you address delinquency and thereby,
propose a poetic reading of the social context
of Rio de Janeiro’s funk balls. How did you ar
rive at the idea of such a work for the German
exhibition?
Mauricio Dias - We have been interested in
doing something with the funk balls for some
time, We live in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro, a
neighborhood surrounded by six slums. Around,
half of the population of the area lives at those,
places. Therefore, the reality of these areas
‘and of the sium dweller is something very close
to our daily life. Funk music comes from that
contact, because itis a music originated from
the slums. We sincerely appreciate its manifesta-
tion, which contains an act of popular cultural
resistance, also present in samba, in pagode,
in the use of language and in the way people
dress. When we discovered that the mercenary
Hans Staden (who visited Brazil at the beginning
of colonization, being nearly devoured by Tup-
nambai Indians) came from the neighborhoods
