professional and important job, due to its
involvement with the law and the
government. Lawyers as Professionals and
as Citizens: Key Roles and Responsibilities
in the 21st Century, written by Ben W.
Heineman, Jr., William F. Lee, and David
B. Wilkins, is a comprehensive essay that
incorporates the duties of attorney’s in
present day. There are six major parts that
their essay emphasizes on; defining the
basic framework, the context of the essay’s
analysis, the reality of corporate
departments, the inequality of business and
service, the connotation of law schools on
the next generation of lawyers, and a brief
discussion on the collaboration of law
schools, law firms, and corporate offices.
Conclusion
Lawyers as Professionals and as Citizens: Key
Roles and Responsibilities in the 21st Century uses
specific grammatical and rhetorical styles in order
to deliver their point of the essay. The use of logos
is very apparent in it, due to the fact that the
authors chose a path of logical facts instead of
hypotheticals or opinions. They based their essay
off of facts and logic in the law workplace such as
the bar’s ethical requirements and the duties of a
full-time attorney. Ben W. Heineman, Jr., William
F. Lee, and David B. Wilkins were trying to
convey to lawyers their part in their own law
discourse community and to have a well-rounded
understanding of why their roles and duties are so
important for the success of them and their clients.
This essay is to help the outsiders of my
community, the study and practice of law, have a
better understanding of the topics of Lawyers as
Professionals and as Citizens: Key Roles and
Responsibilities in the 21st Century.

The Professional Life of a Lawyer

The basic framework begins discussing the four crucial
duties lawyers have to complete to be successful at their job. They
have an obligation to their clients, to their firm, to the government,
and to the society as a whole. A point is made that lawyers must
follow the bar’s ethical rules as well as humanity’s ethical rules. The
context of the essay focuses on the influence on the study of law by
law schools, law firms, and corporate offices. They have the most
significant and impactful role on society’s view of lawyers and
attorneys. The section of that essay also goes in depth on the cost of
being a lawyer and having lawyers in our communities.
The examination of corporate law firms is a compelling
aspect of the study and practice of law. Lawyers have a shared
obligation to help train young and beginning lawyers, as well as give
them stimulating experiences. Attorneys are required to use their
leadership and important skills to help influence their firm, as well as
others, to further their services to things such as pro bono cases and
more diversity in the field. Pro bono cases are cases that are done
completely voluntarily and without pay.
The imbalance of business and service is a considerable
issue amongst present-day lawyers. The idea that attorneys must have
economic and professional success needs to be reorganized. That
essay specifies five ways to get the business side of attorneys back on
track. Law firms must make excellence and quality a priority. A new
culture must be created to reinforce the way firms are
institutionalized. Lawyers must dedicate more time and effort in
helping the next generation of attorneys by mentoring and instructing
them on the contemporary ways of 21st century attorneys. The last
goal that will help rebalance the workplace is viewing lawyers as the
builder and foundation for a “well-functioning constitutional
democracy” (Heineman Jr. 7).
The last two topics of discussion include the role of law
schools on the next generation and how law firms, offices, and
schools can collaborate to create and help future lawyers become the
best possible versions of themselves for the law and democracy. Law
schools are viewed as extremely important in the growth and
development of upcoming attorneys, but it is not the most important.
The idea for future law schools is that they focus primarily on the
idea of teaching students about their duties and obligations to the
people. The role of the lawyers and attorneys of today are simply to
assist in helping younger and upcoming lawyers the ropes of law.
They need to teach their students the importance and effectiveness of
the legal system and society working together in harmony.
