Domains of the Child Rationale Statement

Standard 11- Ethical Practice:

Teachers shall act in accordance with legal and ethical responsibilities and shall use integrity and

fairness to promote the success of all students (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, pg.

14).

Artifact: The Four Domains of the Child

Education

Rational Statement:

These artifacts are my observations based on analyzing a student’s developmental

milestones. These artifact discus if a student did or did not reach these age appropriate

milestones, which is backed up by evidence. I used the “Developmental Milestones Chart”

developed by Developed by The Institute for Human Services for The Ohio Child Welfare

Training Program and the Developmental Milestone Checklist from the American Pediatric

website as a reference to where these students should be developmentally. Based on the points

from this chart, I was able to observe and analyze these students appropriately. I related this

article to standard 11.i.3, “The teacher promotes aspects of students’ well-being by exercising the
Hess 2

highest level of professional judgment, and working cooperatively and productively with

colleagues and parents to provide a safe, healthy, and emotionally protective learning

environment” (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014, pg. 14). This standard is fitting

because it is up to not only the teacher, but colleagues and parents as well to guide these students

to reach these developmental milestones. Both schools I have observed at have had the students

working with many teachers throughout the day. These students have so much involvement from

other people that will get them to where they need to be in their development. There are different

factors that help students get to where they need to be socially, physically, emotionally and

cognitively. The environment and the climate of the classroom makes an impact on a student’s

development. Students need to be social with their peers, and be able to feel that they can express

themselves socially and emotionally. This comes from the teachers, staff and peers. The teacher

and colleagues need to keep a positive attitude and push their students towards their goals. It is

the job of the adults to guide these students and help them practice these skills all throughout the

day to get them to where they need to be. Every student is in a different place developmentally

so it is the teacher’s job to modify tasks for the students to help them be successful.

These artifacts have taught me where students of different ages should be

developmentally. I was able to get information about developmental milestones through the chart

and the checklist, then use this knowledge to determine where a student is developmentally.

Through this, I also learned how a teacher can make improvements and change strategies to help

students reach these developmentally appropriate milestones.

I can use this artifact in the future to reference where a student should be

developmentally. My artifact provides examples of how a student did or did not hit that

milestone, which can be useful to compare to in the future. I can also use this to look back at for
Hess 3

recommendations on how to get students to hit these milestones. This will be extremely helpful

information in my future teaching practice because a teacher’s main goal is to get their students

to reach all of these developmental milestones.
