My Observation Reflection

During this spring semester I was given the opportunity to observe with Ms. Quick, who

teaches 5th grade science, at Griffis Elementary. I was lucky enough to mentor under her last

semester, so it was nice to see the students and how much more they have learned since I had

seen them last. Once again, Ms. Quick helped further my knowledge and love for education.

While being in a classroom with Ms. Quick I have learned many things. She has shown

me how to incorporate different learning styles per activity, and to use different lessons

throughout the week to teach over one topic. Her teaching was very student-centered, and it

allowed me to see how the students can use their own knowledge and context to work with their

peers to complete their assignments. In a student-oriented classroom the teacher just acts as the

guide. Being in a 5th grade science class has also changed my views on what subject I would

prefer to teach. Ms. Quick used a variety of lessons and TEKS to make her classroom

environment as learning friendly as possible, and I was able to make notes over specific lessons I

would one day like to try.

In my classroom I would love to incorporate Ms. Quicks “stations”. Those were some of

my favorite observation days. I loved being able to walk around and see the students working

together to complete their task and having fun while doing it. Each station was setup in a

different area around the classroom and incorporated a different learning style for each one.

Another thing I enjoyed about Ms. Quicks teaching was how she used different activities each

day to help every student be able to learn. Every day she had a different lesson to reinforce

whatever TEK they were learning.

There were many other lessons and activities that I cannot wait to use in my own class

one day. Ms. Quick has allowed me to see the pros and cons of the education field, but I know

that this is where I want my future to be. I ended up really enjoying the 5th grade level, more than

I thought I would, and I loved seeing the mutual respect shown between the teacher and student,

and even myself as an outsider. Overall, this was an awesome experience and it only further

excites me for my student teaching in the next couple of years, and to one day have my own

classroom and students!
