CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Internship program has its purpose to give a direct experience for the professional life
work and to prepare individuals in securing their future employment. President University
has given final year students an opportunity to undergo an internship program in purpose to
enhance their skills through direct involvement in professional life first-hand in an actual
working environment under the supervision of the field expertise. The university has
provided guide in which help assist the students to have career awareness and clear view on
their goals in accordance with their passions and classroom knowledge.1
According to Graybeal et. Al, students with internship experience tend to be more
active, link the importance of classroom into actual practice, and demonstrate a significant
maturation process which non-internship students do not have.2 It shows that the internship
program is beneficial opportunity for students to practice their classroom knowledges into
working environment directly as in carrying out assignments as well as solving problems.
The supervision also helps to guide the students to be more developed, as stated by Beard, D.
F., that well-organized and carefully supervised internship programs can enhance students’
skills, and help develop the competencies for classroom learning as well as employment.3
President University has given me an opportunity to work as an intern in one of the
largest mining contractor in Indonesia, PT. Pamapersada Nusantara, within the period of 12
July to 12 December 2017. I have seen this internship as a worthy experience and highly
valuable to practice my knowledge and enhance my skills as well as to find my potential as
an International Relations in industry which is fairly different from my field of study.
Through this internship, I was able to gain a greater insight of the industry through
assignments entrusted to me by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Department of the
company.

Changes in national circumstances, especially in the era of regional autonomy has led
to public demands for company to contribute more for development in region. Company puts
high concern towards the society around company, has become one criteria of society need
assessment. The emergence of businesses that process natural resources, such as mining
companies, tend to cause environmental degradation which affected not only the
environmental sustainability, but also the society live near the operational area. 4 The
application of Good Corporate Governance is an integral part of the business success and
corporate image improvement, therefore, a good mining practice needs to be implemented in
order to achieve the Sustainable Development through Sustainable Business.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one of the effective tool and vital part of a
company in carrying out the public assessment as it is lining with the Triple Bottom Line (3P
– Profit, People, and Planet) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).5 World Bank and
the United Nations have recently touted CSR as a potential long-term solution for delivering
development.6 Christophe Yvetot, the Head UNIDO Liaison Office to the European Union
(2003) stated that SDGs are purposely made to achieve the development goals from the
perspective of economic, social and environment, and he sees CSR as one of the tools to
implement these goals at the level of businesses.
This report will elaborate and evaluate on practical knowledge, as well as the insights
and values obtained throughout the internship while assessing the importance of this
internship to analyze and reflecting my experience during internship period to become my
strength in the future.

CHAPTER IV

PERSONAL RESULT/EVALUATION/POINT LEARNED

4.1 Evaluation of Internship Activities

The opportunity of having an internship at PT. Pamapersada Nusantara in Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) Department from 12 July 2017 to 12 December 2017 has

20
enriched and enhanced my knowledge on the insight of CSR role in a company and towards
an actual working environment in professional level. Since it was my first time to work and
involved directly in professional field, I believe that the internship was worthwhile. During
my internship, I was given a different perspective in handling and approaching the society
directly, which is a totally different field from what I am currently studying. I get to see the
real condition of a society which directly affected and live near the mining operational, as
well as the practice of CSR programs implementation and how efficient it is towards the
community.
During my internship at PT. Pamapersada Nusantara, my supervisor, Mr. Maidi Irvan,
and the CSR Team really kind and helped me a lot in fostering my learning, gaining
information and knowledge regarding the role and importance of CSR in a company and
towards society, and guiding me through every phase of my internship. I was given a chance
to learn see things from different perspective, and what should and should not I considered in
fulfilling the need assessment of the public. I get to understand the importance of community
in the existence of the company.

4.2 Point Learned from Internship Activities

This internship has helped me to gain a better understanding about international
development which is one of the goals in International Relations (IR) and also the purpose of
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as CSR Programs need to be in line with the
Triple Bottom Line (3P – Profit, Planet, People) and the goals of SDG. Through this
internship I realize that the entreprises also play a major role in contributing towards SDG.
However, many of the cases happening in mining company are spontaneous, started from the
demonstration of the society towards the existence of the company to the demand of
employment from local people, and the role of CSR is to handle and directly approach the
society. Through my internship, I am able to develop my problem solving skill. I also get to
attend events and doing outdoor activities in a form of monitoring the programs.
As an IR student I do realize that I can fit into any scope of job since the study relates
to almost every industry. Looking back, this internship has shaped the way I do decision
making, which requires problem solving skill in a quick, yet efficient way. However, despite
the benefit I gained through this internship, I believe that there are several changes that the
office could consider to improve for the sake of boosting the employee productivity,
especially in terms of communication between employees of each site to avoid the

21
miscalculation and mismatch of the reports recorded in Head Office and in Sites, which I
believe will affect the productivity of the employees.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

5.1. Conclusion

22
I am thankful for the opportunity which has given to me by PT. Pamapersada Nusantara,
especially for the practical knowledge and instruction, as well as thoughtfulness from my
supervisor and respective team of CSR who kindly helped me. PAMA has accepted me to be
a part of the team and has been very considerate even when I made mistakes which obstruct
the completion of assignments. However, I also had been trained to develop self-ability,
trained to be discipline, independent, professional, and cooperate and responsible in the work
environment. From this internship, I have a clearer vision and direction in what type of future
I am looking for, whether this is my scope of job or whether I can do well in this industry
through an actual working experience in professional environment. Through my internship, I
am able to develop my problem solving skill and how to properly do decision making. I also
get to attend events and doing outdoor activities in a form of monitoring the programs.

5.2. Recommendation
I would like to point out several matters which I suppose can be fixed to create a
significant order. The recommendation for the company is that the monthly reports sent by
sites every month have mostly different data result with the previous reports they sent to
Head Office. There happened a lot of miscalculation and mismatch of the data of CSR
programs that had been carried out. I would like to give suggestion for this matter that the
communication between the officers should be increased. The other matter that I would like
to point out is the discipline of report sending from sites, I found that there are sites that send
their reports late, which can hamper the progress of recapitulation in Head Office for the
monthly report meeting. There are also sites that did not send their monthly report completely,
only a few datas sent to Head Office. I would like to give a suggestion that it is better to have
a time limit or due date for the reports sending. This can raise the discipline attitude for each
individual and to improve the responsibility of the employees.
Aside suggestion for the company, I would like to give a suggestion for the campus
regarding the internship period. I personally thought that this internship has given me a
valuable experience about the actual working environment. However, I believe it would be
better to separate the period of internship and thesis, since it will affect our performance in
completing tasks or assignments. It will be better if students can focus on either internship
program or thesis separately so that the students can optimize their academic performance
and since the thesis will determine whether the students are fulfilling the last criteria to
graduate on time.

23
Hopefully this recommendation could give enlightment for both company and
university on some issues which has been confusing for the students. Lastly, I would like to
express my sincere apology if my words in this recommendation by no means have offended
some parties. However, this is purely for a reflection to create a better system in the future.
