Design of Dome

1>Diameter of Dome=4.5m

To find radius of Dome,

1 1
Adopt a rise of 6 of span = 6 x4.5 = .75m

𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑛 4.5
r= 2
= 2
= 2.25𝑚

rise=0.75m, t=100mm
2
(𝑆⁄2) +ℎ 2 (2.25)2 +(0.75)2
Radius of Shell, R= 2ℎ
= 2x0.75

R=3.75m
2.25
Total Ф = sin−1 3.75 =36°52′

2>Find load W

Dead weight of Shell =0.1x1x24 =2.4kN/m²

Assume equivalent wind and other live loads

@1.5 kN/m² = 1.5kN/m² (As ∅ is nearly 40°)

Water proofing @ 0.9 kN/m²=0.9 kN/m²

Total load =4.8 kN/m²

3>Find stresses in the Shell (classic design) N∅ and N𝜃

N∅ = = =

N∅=9

10.56 X10³
Max compression due to N∅ = 100 X1000 = 0.1056 N/mm²

These stresses are low, and only nominal steel is necessary. We provide 0.12%-0.3% steel both ways
using HxDB.
.2
Assume 0.2% As =100 X 100 X 1000 = 200 mm²/m

Provide 8mm @200mm as hoop and meridinal rft.

4>Check compression for buckling

𝜎𝑐𝑟 Assuming E=25 x 10³ N/mm²

Et 25 X 10³X100
𝜎𝑐𝑟 =R√3 = 3750 X √3
=383.9 N/mm²

With safety factor 4=96.22 N/mm²

Hence safe against buckling.
