MOTIVATION

Students will watch a short clip called “Weather and Climate” and fill out a worksheet on the

differences between weather and climate.

2. Students will take notes in their notebook about what is being discussed in the video. (What is

weather? What are different elements of weather? What is climate? What are different elements

of climate? What are the differences between weather and climate?)

3. Teacher will instruct students to participate in a turn and talk activity where students will turn

to their partner and discuss the question proposed by the teacher. (What is typical weather we

experience during the summer months? What is the climate during the summer?)

4. Students will complete a teacher created worksheet on common vocabulary that has to do with

climate. (What is climate? What does average mean? What is temperature? What is

precipitation?)

6. Students will use their chrome books with a link provided by their teacher and research

climates in New York vs. climates in a place chosen by their teacher for the months of June,

July, and August. (What are some components of climate? What are types of climate in New

York? What are types of climates experienced in the place chosen? How do they differ?)

7. Students will create a list of 3 climate components for New York and the place chosen by the

teacher during the summer months. (What are three components of climate in the months of

June, July, and, August in New York? What are three components of climate in the months of

June, July, and August in________?)

Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to identify the differences between

climates in New York and another region of the world.

Summarizing and note taking

Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to take notes and summarize the key ideas

and concepts from the video “Weather and Climate”.

ADAPTATIONS

 Students who struggle to focus in class will be re-focused as well as re-directed

throughout the entirety of the lesson with non-verbal cues from the teacher.

 English Language Learners will be provided with a vocabulary sheet on content

vocabulary (Vocabularío contento) and will be paired up with a buddy when

Students who struggle in applying knowledge to the assignment will be given a teacher provided

handout on all content vocabulary as well as a list of types of climate in New York as well as a

place chosen by the teacher.

Average Students

After a lesson on what climate is, and why it is different in certain regions of the world students

will use their chrome book to research and create a list of 3 types of climate components in New

York as well as another region of the world during the months of June, July, and August.

Advanced Students

Students will choose a third region of the world not provided by the teacher to conduct their own

research on typical types of climate during the months of June, July, and August.

ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed on climate and weather vocabulary in a Kahoot quiz during class.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

For homework, students will be advised to make a vacation brochure on things they can do in

New York or the other regions climate they were provided with in class.

Direct Teacher Intervention

The teacher will provide worksheets on all content vocabulary as well as climate components in

New York and Australia during the months of June, July, and August. Students will then have to

place all correct provided components into a graphic organizer for each region.

Academic Enrichment

Students will attend an interest center where there will be two cups of Popsicle sticks, one cup

with a popsicle stick for all 50 states and the other with a popsicle stick for the fall, winter, and

spring seasons. A Popsicle stick will be chosen from each cup and the student will research

through books or the Internet about the climate in that state and chosen season.
