What’s the problem?
● Though bullying has been
around for ages, technological
advances has made it easier to
harass people
● Cyberbullying has increasingly
become more of a problem
○ Why? Anonymity
● Bullies are hidden, leaving
victims unaware of who is
harassing them (Victim Blaming…6)
The Roles of Bullying
Bully (Bystander Effects. 3”)

A bully is the person to“start the bullying and take an active part”.

Victim
The victim is the “one who is exposed” by or from the bully.

Bystander
The bystander could be defenders, disengaged onlookers, passive supporters, passive bullies, or
henchman.

Some facts about bullying:

● Over 3.2 million students are victims to bullying


each year.
● About 160,000 students skip school because of
bullying.
● By age 14 less than 30% of boys and 40% of
girls will talk to their peers about bullying.
Definition of Bullying

According to the article Educational Leadership, Dan


Olweus claims that bullies are “people [who] carry out
negative actions through physical contact, with words,
or in more indirect ways, such as making mean faces
or gestures, spreading rumors, or intentionally
excluding someone from a group” (Olweus 144).
Simplified Version:

A Bully is someone who:

● Intentionally inflicts harm physically or emotionally


● Engages in negative actions such as:
○ Physical actions
○ Verbal Actions
○ Indirect Actions
● Commits repeated aggressive behaviors towards a person or a
group of people through:
○ Threats
○ Imtidation
What EDHS Thought:

According to the students, the definition of bullying is:

● Someone who is rude to you maybe constantly


● Purposefully putting someone down
● Bullying is when someone is extremely cruel to another
for no apparent reason

each student every year.

Different Forms Of Bullying

Verbal / Emotional Bullying :

● When you just use your words to put someone down and/ or hurt them.
○ Name Calling
○ Rumor Spreading
○ Degrading someone’s self-worth
○ Teasing or making remarks about the target's culture, religion, ethnicity,
weight, physical appearance disabilities, or medical conditions
○ Telling other not to be friends with the target

Physical Bullying :

● When one or more teens do physical harm to a classmate by doing one or


more of the following:
○ Hitting
○ Kicking
○ Tripping
○ Pushing
○ Taking other children’s possessions

Cyber Bullying :

● This is very similar to verbal and emotional bullying but this is all done
online and not in person
○ Spreading Rumors
○ Name calling
○ Blackmailing (especially if sexting was involved)
○ Posting unattractive photoshopped pictures of other people
Most common form of bullying at
EDHS according to student surveys:
● According to the survey:
○ 50% of students believed that Verbal and Emotional
Bullying are the most common
○ 25% of students believe that Cyberbullying is the most
common
○ 12.5% believe that Physical violence is the most common
○ 12.5% believe that Intimidation is the most common.

How and where do you report
bullying
● You can begin with telling your parents to raise an interest in the
problem.
● You can then tell school faculty if it worsens.
● You can use the Stopit app here at El Dorado High School
