Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Types of Weather

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to determine the different kinds of weather
2. Students will be able to understand the different effects that weather cause
3. Students will be able to understand what weather can do for the environment
State Standards:
Standard One: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the daily and seasonal weather
patterns.

 2.E.2A. Conceptual Understanding: Weather is the combination of

sunlight, wind, precipitation (rain, sleet, snow, and hail), and temperature in a
particular region at a particular time. Scientists measure and record these conditions
to describe the weather and to identify patterns over time. Weather scientists
(meteorologists) forecast severe weather so that communities can prepare for and
respond to these events.
 2.E.2A.1 Analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements to
describe local weather conditions (including temperature, wind, and forms of
precipitation).
 2.E.2A.2 Analyze local weather data to predict daily and seasonal patterns over
time.
 2.E.2A.3 Develop and use models to describe and compare the effects of wind
(moving air) on objects.
 2.E.2A.4 Obtain and communicate information about severe weather conditions
to explain why certain safety precautions are necessary.

Context:
It is a standard in second grade to know what weather is and the different kind of weather
there are. There are many types of weather that can be made in all different forms. Weather is a
very important factor in the environment we live in today. I am teaching this lesson because
second graders must be able to determine sun, wind, rain, sleet, hail, and snow along with
temperature changes and changes weather patterns. Prior to this lesson, students will only be able
to indemnify the different types of weather by looking at pictures with words. After this lesson,
students will be able to identify and acknowledge the many different types of weather. I am
preparing the students to be able to do many fun ongoing projects on weather and if they do not
know the types of weather they will struggle.
Data:
For this lesson students will be grouped by there tables. Each table consists of four
students. Students seats change weekly to reflect on the previous weeks work performance. The
goal is for students to be able to work together to come up with the correct answers to the games
and group activates provided. Students data will be collected by a worksheet data from that will
determine and review the different types of weather.
Materials:
 Smartboard to watch and interact with the video about different types of weather:

https://www.learninggamesforkids.com/weather_games/match-three-weather.html
 Weather Memory: Students will play a game of memory involving pictures of weather
and words of the type of weather. Once students find all the matches they can move on.
 I-Pads to play Weather Seasons Puzzle game:

 Worksheets and pencils
Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
o I will start the lesson off by reviewing where we left of last class, by introducing
the different types of weather. Students will then be asked if they can name the
types of weather they remember. Once students say what they remember, I will
explain the types of weather in depth and will show them pictures, so they get a
better understanding. I will tell the students that they are going to be beginning a
lesson that involves listening and participation. Students will be moving from
table to table with their group, and each table will involve a different lesson.
Students will then get into groups and will wait for further instruction.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

o The group that I will be teaching will start off with a basic video regarding the
different types of weather. The students will watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1ZvQSbVm10 on the smart board. This will
give students the opportunity to watch and listen to the different types of weather.
After students are finished watching the short clip, students will be asked to raise
their hand and state what their favorite type of weather is and why. This gives
students the opportunity to learn off of one another. Once everyone is done
sharing, students will play an interactive matching game on the smartboard
https://www.learninggamesforkids.com/weather_games/match-three-weather.html
. Students will take turns coming up to the smartboard. Once a student is picked to
go up, they must line three pictures of the same weather to get the points. Student
must say what form of weather they matched before the sit back down.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
o In this station, the collaborative station, students will play weather memory.
Weather Memory is a fun simple game for students to play while interacting with
their classmates. Students will get a stack of cards. In that stack of cards, half of
the cards will have pictures of a form of weather, while the other half of the stack
will have the written-out name of the form of weather. Students must flip all cards
over, so they are looking at nothing but the back of a blank card with nothing on
it. After, all cards are flipped students must begin to pick two cards up at a time. If
those two cards picture and written name match, they have a match. If they do not
match students must flip cards back over. This station gives students the
opportunity to match the picture with the correct name.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

o During the independent digital section, students will be individual working by
themselves with their I-pad. On the I-Pad students will be given the opportunity to
play Marco Polo Weather. Marco Polo Weather is an app on the I-Pad that gives
students the opportunity to learn about the different types of weather, create
different types of weather, and change the temperature and wind speed. Students
are able to create their own scenes and are able to learn the types of weather as
they move along. This interactive game gives students the opportunity to learn off
of their mistakes if any are made and lets them learn at their own paste by playing
a game that they enjoy.

Closure (10 minutes):

o This concludes the end of stations and is when students will stand up and go back
to their original assigned seats. After, all students return I will ask a few follow up
questions about the types of weather. After my questions are answered, I will then
be asked students what their favorite station was and why. To conclude the lesson,
I will handout take home worksheets for students to complete at home and bring
back to class tomorrow to be checked. Students should come in with all the right
answers, a and any questions they have. Any last-minute questions will be
answered so we as a class can move on into the next lesson.

Rationale:
Weather You Tube Video:
This video is a piece of multimedia because it serves an educational background about
the different types of weather. This video supports student learning because it teaches students
the different types of weather and how they function. It reaches the standards and objectives
because it touches on the standards that second graders must learn.
Learning Games for Kids: Matching Game for Smartboard:
This is multimedia because it allows students to interact with their classmates as a whole.
Students will take turns to go up to the board and find three pictures that match. This
informational interactive game allows students to learn on a one on one educational level. It
reaches the standards because it gives students the ability to work one on one on understand the
lesson on their own.
Weather Memory:
Weather Memory gives students the opportunity to interactive with each other on a game
base level. Students are able to learn the types of weather from both pictures and words. Memory
gives them the ability to play it over and over again until they understand the types of weather.
This game reaches the standards because it is an educational interactive game.
