METHODOLOGY

This study employs the Pre-Experimental one-shot case study which

according to De Jesus is a design where a single group is only studied once,

subsequent to treatment are the systematic recording of attendance and

tracking of absences and orientation of the students of their daily tasks in

classroom cleanliness. It is important to inform and orient students on the

policies of attendance and tasking for it will serve as grounds for cooperation

and understanding.

Attendance is recorded from the start of the class and changes in

student attendance when classroom structure organization starts are noted

down by the class adviser/ teacher- researcher and plotted in a graph.

Analysis compares the data across all data sources and looking for

significant differences before and after the approach is used.

Mode of Verifications will be the SF2, School Register, Classroom

Daily Attendance Log, Group Accomplishment Report and individual ratings,

pictures, awards ( Search for Cleanest Classrooms), and Classroom

Inventories ( Beginning, Midyear and Year-End).

Homeroom Parents- Teachers Association provides assistance in terms

of Classroom Improvements along with the classroom funds and teacher-

adviser’s personal money.

(or you may specify your steps following the format I

gave you.)
Significance of the Study.

The study will be deemed important in recognizing the effects of the

use of higher-order thinking skills in improving reading comprehension on

the academic performance of my Grade 10- Jupiter students. Likewise, the

findings of the study may prove useful to the following, to wit;

Students. Understanding that Reading Comprehension involves various

factors such as background knowledge, vocabulary and fluency, active

reading skills and critical thinking that must work together. This will further

enhance students’ knowledge on the importance of basic skills of their

competencies so they will make an effort to do their best. This may lead to

better enthusiasm and development of good study habits.

Teachers. This study may heighten their awareness in identifying the

learning tasks that are well- developed as well as the least. This may also

motivate the teacher to adapt measures and new strategies to improve

reading instructions.

Parents. The results of this study will help the parents in identifying the

needs of their children in improving reading comprehension.

School Administrators and Supervisors. The results of the investigation

may encourage the administrators and supervisors in helping their teachers

by providing faculty developments, trainings and seminars and holding

activities that will upgrade teaching performance and instructions.

Curriculum Planners. The findings of this study may assist the planners in

identifying suitable and necessary teaching methods, techniques and

strategies needed to improve students’ reading comprehension skills.

Community. The community may also benefit from this study as much as the

teachers since after the academic years, it will be receiving the graduates in

the nation’s workforce equipped with the vital skills and competencies for

national development.

Researcher Herself. This may serve as a springboard and inspiration to

employ varied and creative strategies/ methods that will encourage students’

participation.

Future Researchers. The information and insights that will be learned

from this study may serve as a guide for other researchers in framing

concepts and designs and conducting lateral studies with their area of

preferences
CHAPTER III

Methodology

Scope of the Study/ Locale

The general focus of the study will be on Improving Reading

Comprehension through the Use of Higher-Order Thinking Skill Activities
of my Grade 10- Jupiter English class students in Alamada High School,
Division of Cotabato. The study will use the Phil-Iri assessment test (
2016-2017)and the Metacomprehension Strategy Index (MSI). The aspect
is in Improving Reading Comprehension through Higher-Order Thinking
Skill Activities. The study will employ different reading strategies.
Predicting, making connections, visualizing, inferring, questioning and
summarizing activities will be used on this research to improve reading
comprehension.

This study will employ the Pre-Experimental one-shot case study which
according to De Jesus is a design where a single group is only studied
once, subsequent to treatment is the instruction of Reading strategies. It is
important to teach the strategies by naming them and how they are used.
These will be modeling through think-aloud processes, group practice,
partner practice and independent use of the strategy.

Respondents

My Grade 10- Jupiter students in my English Class, SY 2017-2018, will

be my respondents.

Data Collection Procedure

Pre-Implementation Activities

1. Orientation of the student-respondents

2. Employment and distribution of the MSI to students during the Reading
Class. Teacher-Researcher will read one section per day for three
consecutive days on the MSI. Students will complete the MSI while the
teacher reads the survey. The teacher will check and score the MSI.
3. The teacher will administer Test Ready’s Practice Reading
Comprehension Test. (Pre-Test)

Implementation

A. Silent Reading

1. Reading for Speed Activity (passage 1-3)

2. Recording
3. Reading for Comprehension
4. Checking and Recording Individual and Class Reading Profile
5. Plotting data in the progress chart
6. Reading for Speed Activity (passage 4-6)
7. Recording
8. Reading for Comprehension
9. Checking and Recording Individual and Class Reading Profile
10. Plotting data in the progress chart

B. Oral Reading

3. Student Activity

D. Post-Test

1. Phil-Iri Silent and Oral Reading

2. Checking and Recording of Scores
3. Plotting of Data in the progress chart

Post-Implementation

1. The teacher will write the Historical Description of the Intervention.

2. The teacher will write the presentation and analysis of results.
3. The teacher will write the conclusions and recommendations.
4. The teacher will write a reflection.
5. The teacher will do the revisions and finalization of result.
6. The teacher will complete the Action Research and will submit it for
approval.

Data Processing and Analysis

Two tools that will be used by the teacher-researcher to collect data,

analyze students’ use and students’ understanding of the reading strategies
will be an observation checklist and progress monitoring chart. The teacher
will use the checklist to observe which reading comprehension strategies are
used before, while and after reading. The Progress Monitoring Chart will be
used to track the progress of each student as shown by the scores.

For tracking students improvement, an Individual and Class Reading

Profile is also used for summarizing of student’ records. This contains the
formula for the computation of reading speed and comprehension skill.
Note that in the reading activities, speed is taken consideration,
however the goal of reading is constructing meaning, the comprehension
score will be given more weight.

Formula for computing the reading speed of the student:

Reading Speed= No. of Words in the passage x 60

Reading time in seconds

Formula for computing the reading comprehension of the student:

Comprehension (C)= No. of Correct Answers x 100

No. of Questions
