Dear Members of our Parish Family,
Peace and all good!
Today’s Gospel from Luke (19:9-14) reminds me of an
expression that is often used in 12-step recovery programs:
“There but for the grace of God, go you or I.” It’s meaning it
rather clear: we dare not for one minute think of ourselves
as superior to any other human being. That’s simple enough
in the telling and most of us would readily subscribe to the
truth of this statement. But the reality is that we live in a
world where people are often judging others or being judged
by appearances: by the color of their skin, by their accent,
by the clothing they wear, by the part of town they live in, or
the kind of job they have. We’re all guilty of this to some
extent: categorizing people gives us, we think, serves as a
kind of shorthand. It helps us to navigate, we tell ourselves,
fairly well in a world which is full of strangers and dangers.
Jesus challenges that lie by giving us an extreme example.
He pits the image of the Pharisee--the righteous, disciplined,
and strictly observant believer—against that of the Tax
Collector, who by virtue of his profession is easily branded
and targeted as unclean—a traitor, an extortionist, and a
cheat. Jesus pays attention to their hearts, not their
appearance, and the result is surprising, even shocking. God
does not care about what’s on the outside; God cares very
much about what is inside our hearts.
Sociologists tell us that faith communities are among the
few remaining “spaces” in our culture where people of vari-
ous walks of life and lifestyles can gather peacefully to-
gether in a shared environment where everyone feels at
home. Here at Mission San Luis Rey Parish, we celebrate
that gift of shared space in a parish family rich in diversity

SOCIAL CONCERNS ANNUAL THANKSGIVING
FOOD BASKET DRIVE
It’s time once again to turn our thoughts
and hearts to those in our community who
need our help to give their children a
Thanksgiving Dinner worth remembering.
Sadly, some of these are military families
who are already shouldering an incomprehensively heavy
burden. Missing a festive family day because of a lack of
food should not be added to their load.
As always we will screen our applicants to assure only
those truly in need get added to our list. We are asking for a
donation of $40.00 per family for a basket containing
everything that is necessary for a beautiful Thanksgiving
dinner. Since we recognize that almost every one has been

and commitment. At the same time the Spirit urges us not
just to pray side by side, but to get to know each other
better and to share our lives, friendship, and faith more
deeply-- side by side. It’s a big order, but with the Lord’s
help we will certainly make progress.
This weekend, we are kicking off our campaign to raise
funds for our Our Lady of Guadalupe Sports Court/ Parking
lot. When completed—hopefully in Spring 2011—this
80,000 square foot facility will provide paved parking for
300+ for weekend Masses. During the week and at other
times, it will be marked out for use for sports activities
available to our parish children and youth, including those
enrolled in our Religious Education Program as well as
students at our parish school, Old Mission Montessori.
This is the kind of “shared space” that the Gospel
indirectly calls us to create and celebrate. One of the major
goals of this project, besides completing the project itself, is
to generate more unity in our parish family. It’s already
happening! Ever since the announcement of the Sports
Court effort in late January of this year, both individuals and
groups have quietly been “building up equity” through a
variety of projects, including food sales, the Christmas in July
Carnival, and rummage sales. The price tag is high--
$330,000—but the effort is paying off. We already have
more than $50,000 raised even before starting our general
campaign! All of these efforts have helped us reach our
financial goal, to be sure, but just as importantly they’ve
helped—with the grace of God-- to bring us closer together

We gladly accept any donations of turkeys, hams, canned
goods and other holiday goodies especially home baked
cakes, pies and cookies. We would appreciate it if you would
please check your cans and eliminate all out-dated, rusted,
dented or obviously old cans. We can’t give those out and
this will save us a lot of time.
Checks may be marked “food basket” and placed in the
Sunday collection. If you cannot afford to sponsor an entire
family, please give what you can. Food donations may be
brought to the Social Concerns Department in the Loretto
House across from the McKeon Center during normal parish
business hours.

 LIFE & DIGNITY SUNDAY
Next Sunday has been designated Life &
Dignity Sunday here in the Diocese of San
Diego. At the request of Bishop Brom, our
parish is inviting and encouraging all
parishioners to register for the new
statewide Catholic Legislative Network (CLN) on Life and
Dignity Sunday. In this weekend’s bulletin, you will find a
letter from Bishop Brom that explains the CLN and a
registration card. Parishioners are encouraged to read it
carefully and consider registering for the CLN. Please bring
your completed registration card next weekend and drop it
in the collection basket.
Altar Servers Leadership 2010/2011
San Luis Rey Parish is blessed with a very large
number of young ministers who serve at the altar
every Sunday and on other special occasions. We are
grateful to them and to their parents for this
generous service to the parish family. Servers are the
closest to the priest at Eucharist and they see to it
that everything runs smoothly at our celebrations.
More importantly, theirs is a sacred service of the Lord and
through this service they are blessed as are their families.
Assisting Laura Chun, Director of Altar Servers, this
coming year are senior servers: Drake Ardon, Lisa Ocampo,
Zachary Mathison, Luis Ocampo, Jorge Soto and Jasmine
Viernes. They will help with server-training, organization of
various activities, mentoring of younger servers and
supporting Mrs. Chun. Service on the Leadership Team is for
one year. Thank you for your good work Team!

Estimados Miembros de la Familia Parroquial,
¡Paz y Todo Bien!
El Evangelio de hoy de Lucas (19:9-14) me recuerda una ex-
presión que es usada corrientemente en los programas de
los 12 pasos de recuperación: “Allá por la gracia de Dios, ve
tu o yo” Su significado es claro: en ningún momento, debe-
mos pensar en nosotros como superiores a otros seres
humanos. Es bien sencillo lo que dice y muchos de nosotros
debemos suscribirnos a la verdad de esta afirmación. Pero la
realidad es que vivimos en un mundo donde la gente está
juzgando a otros a menudo o siendo juzgados por las apa-
riencias: por el color de su piel, por su acento, por la ropa
que usan, por el área del pueblo donde vive, o por la clase
de trabajo que desempeña. Todos somos culpables de esto
en algún grado: creemos que al categorizar a la gente nos
sirve como una taquigrafía. Esta nos ayuda a navegar, cree-
mos nosotros, bastante bien en un mundo el cual está lleno
de extraños y de peligros
Jesús reta esa mentira dándonos a nosotros un ejemplo ex-
tremo. El con un imagen del Fariseo--el creyente correcto,
disciplinado y estricto—contra la del Cobrador de Impuestos
que debido a su profesión está clasificado y marcado fácil-
mente como sucio—un traidor, un extorsionista y un tram-
poso. Jesús le presta atención a sus corazones, no a sus apa-
riencias, y el resultado es sorprendente, hasta escandaloso.
A Dios no le preocupa la apariencia exterior, Dios se preocu-
pa mucho sobre lo que está dentro de nuestros corazones.
Los sociólogos nos dicen que las comunidades de fe son uno
de los pocos “espacios” que aún quedan en nuestra cultura
donde la gente de varias sendas y estilos de vida pueden
reunirse amigablemente en un ambiente compartido donde
todos se sienten en casa. Aquí en la Parroquia de la Misión
de San Luis Rey, nosotros celebramos ese regalo de un espa-
cio compartido en una familia parroquial rica en diversidad y
en compromiso. Al mismo tiempo, el Espíritu nos exige a no
solo rezar junto a los demás--sino más bien a conocernos
mejor unos a otros y a compartir nuestras vidas, nuestra
amistad y nuestra fe más profundamente--al lado de los de-
más. Es una orden mayor, pero con el Señor ayudándonos,
nosotros podemos progresar ciertamente en este aspecto.
Este fin de semana, nosotros estamos iniciando nuestra
campaña de levantar fondos para Nuestra Cancha y Esta-
cionamiento “Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.” Al estar ter-
minado, el cual esperamos en la primavera del 2011, esta
facilidad de 80,000 pies cuadrados proveerá estaciona-
miento pavimentado para más de 300 vehículos por Misa
de fin de semana. Durante la semana y en otras activida-
des, estará rotulado para el uso de actividades deportivas
disponibles para los niños y jóvenes de nuestra parroquia,
incluyendo los que están matriculados en nuestro Progra-
ma de Educación Religiosa y en nuestra Escuela Montesso-
ri.

Este será una especie de “espacio compartido” que el Evange-
lio indirectamente nos llama a crear y a celebrar. Una de las
metas de este proyecto, además de completar el proyecto en
sí, es el de generar más unidad en nuestra familia parroquial.
“¡Ya esto está ocurriendo!” Desde que se anunció el esfuerzo
que se llevaría el proyecto en sí en enero de este año, los indi-
viduos y los grupos ya están “acumulando valores” a través
de una variedad de proyectos, incluyendo ventas de comidas,
el Carnaval de Navidad en Julio y ventas de donaciones/
artículos usados. El costo es elevado--$330,000 pero el es-
fuerzo está brindando beneficios. ¡Ya tenemos más de
$50,000 recaudados aún antes de iniciar nuestra campaña
general! Todos estos esfuerzos nos han ayudado a alcanzar
nuestra meta financiera, asegurándonos, que aún con lo im-
portante que ha sido su ayuda—con la gracia de Dios—nos
hemos unido más cerca. Gracias a todos por su generosidad y
apoyo.

El Obispo Brom anunciará el comienzo de un “Año de Oración”
para nuestra familia entera de la Misión San Luis Rey. Un llamado
a todos a renovar nuestro compromiso de fe y de unos hacia
otros. El Obispo estará con nosotros el domingo, 28 de octubre y
NO el sábado, 27 de octubre (como se había anunciado en el
boletín de la semana pasada) en un servicio de oración especial.
Canastas para el Día de Acción de Gracias
El tiempo ha llegado de Nuevo para que dirijamos nuestros cora-
zones y nuestros pensamientos hacia aquellas personas de nuestra
comunidad que necesitan nuestra ayuda para dar a sus familias una
Cena de Acción de Gracias digna de recordarse. El carecer de un día
de fiesta por falta de alimentos no debe de añadirse a su carga.
De nuevo, estamos solicitando un donativo de $40 por familia para
una Canasta conteniendo todo lo necesario para una cena de Acción
de Gracias hermosa. Nosotros reconocemos que casi todos han sido
impactados negativamente por la situación económica reciente y no
estamos fijando una meta específica este año. Nosotros haremos lo
mejor que podamos con lo que recibamos de ustedes.
Aceptaremos gustosamente donativos de pavos, de jamones, de
productos enlatados y otros alimentos hechos en casa como paste-
les, “pies” y galletas. Agradeceremos que ustedes examinen las latas
que van a donar y eliminen aquellas que están pasadas de fecha,
mohosas, maltratadas, obviamente, latas viejas.
El cheque puede ser marcado “Food Basket” (Canasta de Comida)
y ponerse en la colecta del domingo. Si no puede patrocinar una
familia entera, por favor, dé lo que usted pueda dar. Los alimentos
pueden traerse al Departamento de Asuntos Sociales en la Casa
“Loretto”, frente al Centro Mckeon, durante las horas normales de
trabajo.

During this October, the month of St. Francis, the Emmanuel Drama Group will present an event from the
life of St. Francis – his conversion story and the account of his passing called the Transitus. As we begin the
program “Rebuild My Church” at our parish, we have this wonderful opportunity to familiarize ourselves
with the story of the Little Poor Man of Assisi who in his day rebuilt the household of Christ, the Church, by
serving his sisters and brothers and calling them to peace and reconciliation. Congratulations to the Em-
manuel Drama Group for this generous gift to the Parish Family – please come and support them as we
celebrate Francis of Assisi.
