1. The pressure gage on a 2.5m3 oxygen tank reads 500 kPa. Determine the amount of oxygen in
the tank if the temperature is 28°C and the atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa. The gas constant of
oxygen is, R=0.2598 kJ / kg. K

Solution:
Pabs= Pg +Patm
Pabs= 500+97= 597 kPa

T(K)=28+273= 301 K
PV= m R T
m= P V = 597 x 2.5 = 19.076 kg
RT 0.2598 x 301.15

2. A 400-L rigid tank contains 5 kg of air at 25°C. Determine the reading on the pressure gage if
the atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa.

Solution:
P= m R T = (5 kg)( 0.287 kPa · m3 / kg· K) = 1069.1 kPa
V 0.4 m3

Gauge Pressure is:

Pg =P - Patm =1069.1 - 97 = 972.1 kPa
3. A 1-m3 tank containing air at 25°C and 500 kPa is connected through a valve to another tank
containing 5 kg of air at 35°C and 200 kPa. Now the valve is opened, and the entire system is
allowed to reach thermal equilibrium with the surroundings, which are at 20°C. Determine the
volume of the second tank and the final equilibrium pressure of air.

Given:
Tank A:
VA= 1 m3
TA= 25 °C = 298 K
PA = 500 kPa

Tank B:
mB = 5 kg
TB = 35 oC = 308 K
PB = 200 kPa
Tsurr = 20 oC = 293 K

Solution:
For air, gas constant R = 0.287 kJ/kmol K

mA = PA VA = 500 x 1 = 5.846 kg
RTA 0.287 x 298
mA = 5.846 kg

Volume of the tank B can be determined from

VB= mB RTB = 5 x 0.287 x 308

PB 200

VB = 2.21 m3

Total volume, V = VA + VB = 1+ 2.21 = 3.21 m3

Total mass of air, m = mA + mB = 5 + 5.846 = 10.846 kg

The final equilibrium pressure (P) can be obtained from the ideal gas equation applied to
total volume
P = m R Tsurr
V
P = 10. 846 x 0.287 x 293
3.21
P= 284. 13 kPa

4. The pressure in an automobile tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire. When the air
temperature is at 25 ◦C, the pressure gauge reads 210 kP a. If the volume of the tire is 0.025 m3,
determine the pressure rise in the tire when the air temperature in the tire rises to 50 ◦C. Also
determine the amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its original value at this
temperature. Assume the atmospheric pressure to be 100 kP a.

Given
Initial air temperature, T1 = 25 oC = 298 K
Initial gage pressure, Pg = 210 kPa
Volume of the tire, V = 0.025 m3
Final Temperature, T2 = 50 oC = 323 K
Atmospheric pressure, Patm = 100 kPa

Solution
P1 = Pg + Patm = 210 +100 = 310 kPa
From the ideal gas equation, we have
P1V1 = mRT1 —— (1)
P2V2 = mRT2 —— (2)

V1 = V2
P2 = P1 T2 = 310 x 323 = 336 kPa
T1 298
Therefore pressure rise
= 336 – 310

Pressure rise
At T = 323 K and P = 336 kPa
Mass of air in the tire can be obtained from

m1 =
For air, gas constant R = 0.287 kJ/kg K

Therefore, m1 =
m1 = 0.0906 kg

At T = 323 K and P = 310 kPa

Mass of air in the tire is given by

m2 =

Therefore, m2 =
m2 = 0.0836 kg
The amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its original value is,
= m1 – m2
= 0.0906 – 0.0836
