Graphing Quadratics in

Standard Form
Lesson Plan for Algebra Concepts
Prepared by Ms. Lindstrom

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the properties of quadratics functions in

standard form. Students should be able to graph quadratics in standard form,
determine the axis of symmetry, vertex, and y-intercept. Last class we determined
how to find these properties in vertex form. So, this lesson will build on prior
knowledge of these property definitions and graphing quadratic functions. This
lesson will also touch on converting between each form and their differences.
Students will be introduced to real life applications of quadratics and how it is
applied in many fields.

Key Vocabulary: Quadratic, function, standard form, vertex form, parabola, axis of
symmetry, vertex, y-intercept, convert.

EDUCATION STANDARDS

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.C.8

Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent

forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.IF.C.8.A

Use the process of factoring and completing the square in a

quadratic function to show zeros, extreme values, and symmetry of
the graph, and interpret these in terms of a context.

OBJECTIVES (learning targets)

1. Understand and apply properties of quadratic function in Standard Form

2. Graph parabolic functions using its properties.
3. Determine vertex form of a parabolic graph.
4. Convert vertex form to standard form.
a. Understand order of operations.
b. Understand factoring.
5. Connect quadratics to real life application. (Example: Sports)

MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Notebook, laptop.
2. Calculator (not required).

VERIFICATION

Steps to check for student understanding

1. At the beginning of class, students will complete a warm up. During this time
I will be walking around the room looking at students work to check for their
prior understanding on graphing in vertex form, axis of symmetry, and
vertex. This will help me determine the length of time and concepts that need
to be addressed when we go over the warm up.
2. As we go through the notes there will be opportunities to ask questions and
clarify understanding. I will be gauging understanding by asking guided
questions.
3. During the work time, students will have an opportunity to work through a
few problems on their own or with partners. Between each level students will
be expected to check their work with me and have the correct work before
moving on to the next level. Any misconceptions will be addressed during this
time and student will correct any mistakes before they can move on.

ACTIVITY

Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson

Warm up:
Students will start class by completing familiar problems in their notebook.
They will complete this individually and will have the opportunity to ask questions
before we discuss the warm up as a class. (10-15 minutes)

Guided Notes:
Students will take notes in their notebook on standard form. These notes will
touch on prior knowledge and discuss applications of quadratic functions. We will be
connecting the shape of the graph to throwing a ball, sports, and physics. This
should allow students to get a better understanding of the math they are doing and
draw on students interests.
The guided notes will include three problems. There will be opportunities for
students to check their own understanding, clarify, and ask questions on the new
material. I will be asking guiding questions to help students work through these
problems as a class.

Practice:
Students will be given time during class to practice the new material on their
own, or with a group/partner. This is a leveled assignment that has multiple parts.
The first part, students will be using what they learned in class to graph quadratic
functions in standard form.
Once they have completed and checked/corrected their work, they will move
onto the second part which is writing the equation of the graph that they drew into
vertex form. This is a time for students to refresh their understanding on vertex
form and start to connect the two forms together.
Students who get through both parts will then watch a video and try to turn
vertex form into standard form. This will be great practice for Algebra 2 and a bit of
a challenge activity. Students will practice distribution, and order of operations in
order to convert between forms.

Kahoot:
At the end of class (15 minutes left), we will play a kahoot on quadratic
functions. The kahoot has questions on both vertex and standard form. This will
conclude the class with a summary and an opportunity for students to evaluate
their own understanding. This is also a way to reward students hard work.

DIFFERENTIATION

Students will be provided a leveled practice assignment. Students will have an

opportunity to practice the new material in a differentiated manner. Each level will
add a new challenge. The first part of the practice will allow for students to ask
questions and work on understanding the new material. The second part will require
prior knowledge and build on the idea that these forms are equivalent ways to write
the same graph. The third part, is for students who need to be challenged in class.
They will be watching a video on their own and trying to use prior knowledge to
convert between forms. This is designed to be more independent though students
can still ask questions as they are working through each conversion.
