1 The pressure gage on a 2.5-m2 oxygen tank reads 500 kPa. Determine the amount of oxygen in the
tank if the temperature is 28°C and the atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa.

V=2.5m2 P atm= 97 kPa ROxygen= 2598 KJ/kg-K Pgage=500 kPa.

T=28 °C

* °C to K *P abs=Patm + Pgage

K=28°C +273 = 301 K = 500kPa +97 kPa = 597 kPa

PV=mRT

m=PV/RT =(597 kPa)(2.5m2) / (0.2598 KJ/kg-K)(301 K)

m=19.08 kg

2. A 400-L rigid tank contains 5 kg of air at 25°C .Determine the reading on the pressure gage if the
atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa.

Rair= 0.287 kPa.m3/kg.

P=mRT/V

P=(5 kg)(0.287 kPa m3/kg K)(298 K)/0.4 m3

P=1069.1 kPa

Pgage= P – Patm = 1069.1 kPa − 97 kPa

Pgage = 972.1 kPa

3. A 1-m2 tank containing air at 25°C and 500 kPa is connected through a valve to another tank
containing 5 kg of air at 35°C and 200 kPa. Now the valve is opened, and the entire system is allowed to
reach thermal equilibrium .With the surroundings, which are at 20°C. Determine the volume of the
second tank and the final equilibrium pressure of air.

Given

V1= 1 m3

T1= 25 °C + 273 = 298 K

P1 = 500 kPa

m2= 5 kg

T2= 35 °C + 273 = 308 K

P2 = 200 kPa

Tsurrounding = 20 °C + 273 = 293 K

R air= 0.287 kJ/kmol -K

m1 =P1V1 /RT1

= (5 x 0.287 x 308) / 200

m1 = 5.846 kg

V2= (m2RT2) / P2

= (5x 0.287 x 308) / 200

V2= 2.21 m3

Total volume,

V = V1+ V2= 1+ 2.21 = 3.21 m3

Total mass of air,

m = m1+ m2= 5 + 5.846 = 10.846 kg

therefore ,

P = (mRTsurrounding) / V
= (10.846 x 0.287 x 293) / 3.21

P= 284.13 kPa

4. The pressure in an automobile tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire. When the air
temperature is 25°C, the pressure gage reads 210 kPa .If the volume of the tire is 0.025 m3, determine
the pressure rise in the tire when the tire temperature in the tire rises to 50°C. Also, determine the
amount of air that must be bled off to restore pressure to its original value at this temperature. Assume
the atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa.

R = 0.287 kJ/kg · K

Ptire= Pgage + Patm = 210 kPa + 100 kPa = 310 kPa

(P 1V1) / T1 = ( P2V2) / T2

P2= (T2 / T1)* P1 = (323 K / 298 K )*(210 kPa) = 336 kP a

ΔP = P2 – P1 = 336 – 310

ΔP= 26 kPa

m1 = P1V / RT1

= (310 kPa)(0.025 m3) / [ (0.287 kJ/kg · K)(1 kPa · m3/1 kJ)*(298 K) ]

m1 = 0.0906 kg

m2 = P2V / RT2

= (310 kP a) (0.025 m3) / [(0.287 kJ/kg · K)(1 kP a · m3/1 kJ )*(323 K) ]

m2= 0.0836 kg

Δm = m1 – m2 = 0.0906 − 0.0836

Δm = 0.0070 kg
