Question 2

 4x i  4 y j
(a) The force acting at a point (x, y) in a coordinate plane is F ( x, y )  where
| r |3
r  x i  y j . Calculate the work done by F along the upper half of the circle
x 2  y 2  a 2 from (a, 0) to (-a, 0).
(11 marks)

(b) Verify Green’s theorem for F  x 2 i  y 2 j over the region R : 1  x  2 , 0  y  2x .

Question 3

(a) Use Lagrange multipliers to find the optimum values of f ( x , y , z )  x  2 y  3z subject

to the constraint x 2  y 2  z 2  14 . Find the points where these optimum values occur.
(12 marks)

(b) Liquid is pumped into a tank of horizontal cross sectional area A m2 at a rate of Q
liter/sec and is drained by a valve at its base as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1
dx
Using Bernoulli’s principle, the mass balance is A  Q  B 2 gx(t ) where B is the
dt
cross sectional area of the efflux pipe and g is the acceleration of gravity. Taking A  1
dx
and B 2 g  0.01, we get  Q  0.01 x(t ) . Approximate x meters at the end of two
dt
minutes given that Q  0.02 , x(0)  6 and h  20 seconds. Perform all calculations
correct to five decimal places.
(7 marks)

(c) Out of ten items manufactured at a factory, two are found to be faulty. If a sample of
three is taken at random, what is the probability that the sample contains:
(i) two faulty items?
(3 marks)
(ii) at least two faulty item?
(3 marks)

Question 4

(a) The width of twelve bolts, measured in centimeters, were found to be:
3.2 3.4 3.1 3.3 3.3 3.4 3.1 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.2 3.3

Given that the width of the bolts are normally distributed, calculate a 95% confidence
interval for the mean width of the population of these bolts. Perform all calculations
correct to three decimal places.

Question 5

(a) The heights of boys at a particular age follow a normal distribution with mean 150.3 cm
and standard deviation 5 cm. Find the probability that a boy picked at random from this
age group has height:
(i) less than 153cm.

(b) Observations of the time taken to test an electrical circuit board show that it has mean
5.82 minutes with standard deviation 0.63 minutes. As a result of the introduction of an
incentive scheme, it is believed that the inspectors may be carrying out the test more
quickly. It is found that for a random sample of 150 tests, the mean time taken is 5.68
minutes.
(i) Assuming that the population variance remains unchanged, test at 5% significance
level.
(8 marks)
(ii) Verify your answer to part (b)(i) by calculating the confidence interval for the
population mean. Explain your answer.
