Digital Music Performance: Sampling, Sequencing and Finger-drumming techniques on Native

Instruments Maschine Digital Audio Workstation

Students of this course will be thoroughly instructed in the use of a revolutionary digital
instrument for live performance of electronic music - Native Instruments Maschine. Maschine is
a hardware/software digital audio workstation developed by Native Instruments and it consists
of a controller that connects to the included sequencing software, which can be installed on any
compatible computer or laptop.

The digital aspect of the course will focus on teaching students how to program Maschine, how
to sample both internal and external sounds and how to prepare audio samples for the use in
their performance. The artistic part will then focus on developing the students’ creativity and
aesthetics in making meaningful musical forms by putting the samples together and performing
them as their own compositions or improvisations in front of the audience or within a recording
studio environment.

The music performed doesn’t necessarily have to be electronic music, for the samples can be
taken from any musical style or sounds source that surround us. An extensive music theory or
performance knowledge is not required for this class since even a musical amateur can fairly
quickly learn how to create music and possibly even the art on Native Instruments Maschine.
This course will present a perfect marriage between IT aficionados and music lovers, for it
connects the two worlds in the most creative, provocative and innovative ways.
