NARRATIVE REPORT

Being assigned in Mechanical Maintenance department which all the mechanical

works in the plant went, help me a lot practice my profession in actual field of work.

First, I’ve been introduced and briefed about the plant operation of SLPGC’s Unit

3 & 4, we saw major equipments used in the plant like the boiler, turbine, generator and

condenser etc. as how coal is transfer to an electrical energy. On part of that, I also

introduced to plant paper works and documents needed and used in the plant/company

like different types of work orders, encoding of technical evaluation, using the mainpac

system etc. On the following days, we get exposed in plant works especially areas that

caused the plant shut down, I able to see the TIG welding used in a boiler tube leak and

how it is different with structural welding. I also able to see the inside of the boiler and

understand why is it called a CFB(Circulating Fluidized Bed) type seeing the air nozzles

and bed materials on the inner floor of it.

Our time in plant able us to try unfamiliar devices and equipment like XRF metal

analyser, it is a device identifying the chemical composition of a metal and what kind of

metal it is. Our supervisor let us joined technicians with their assigned activities. For

preventive maintenance, I get to join the inspection and lubrication change for chemical

dose system. I realized that inspection and cleaning of equipment is important for it to
last a long time. For corrective maintenance, we monitor some activities prior to the

repair and reconditioning of some equipment in the plant such as, removal and

replacement of nozzles inside the furnace, Laser Alignment on Primary Air Fan, J-valve

repair monitoring, Auto lubrication change and gear box replacement for coal feeders

and etc. I also get to help monitoring the plug valve temperature for the unit start up.

We also attended Power Plant 101 wherein different kinds and types of power plant was

discussed especially coal-fired or fossil fuel power plant. The meeting involved all major

equipment systems and flow diagram for both Calaca power Complex and Southwest

Luzon power Generation Corporation Units. On the next day, we walk down through the

plant and electrical control room where the brain of the plant is found.

I also get to inspect material, items and equipment delivered at warehouse with

our supervisor, I think this will help me a lot because I get to see items which Im not

familiar with how it is used and where that particular equipment is placed and what for.

We also attend meetings and seminars with suppliers discussing their proposed

equipment, it really benefit us because we actually learning while listening to their

products.

As a Trainee in Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corp., Maintenance

Department, I was given the opportunity to experience how challenging the job possibly

awaits me. it really stretched and exposed me in actual field of work, I able to see

unfamiliar equipments, those things I only seeing on books and manuals I saw it on the

plant and knew how and where it works. I also learn to try devices like XRF metal

analyzer, micrometer, easy laser alignment, caliper, meter filler gauge etc. The
experience also let me to have insights on repairing equipment which can really help me

for my future job. Most importantly I learn the concept of the power plant the systems

under it; such the air and gas system, fluidizing sytem, condensate system, coal

feeding, sootblowing limestone. Etc

I’ve realized how I learned in school really differs in the field. You have to adjust

quickly to new environment and cope with new things that will throw at you. There were

no excuses and you have to remain calm and composed as you go through tough

challenges. On top of that is I learned that you have to maintain a good relationship with

people around you and don’t let anything not related to job affects your work in the

company. This training developed my skill technically and interpersonally thanks to my

supervisors and technicians that guide me during my three months of stay.

My three months of training will be forever a lesson for me to always strive for the

best and never looked down on yourself just because you committed a mistake, you

may fall a hundred times but you can always stand up a thousand times.
