Chapter 2: Architectural Department

2.1 Introduction

Architectural department is mostly responsible in all the architectural works related to

the construction. Usually architectural works can be done after the structural works has been
completed. Most of architectural works focus on increasing the aesthetic values of the
building by making the structure look beautiful and nice. Architectural works involving the
fine works such as doing the bricklaying, wall smoothing, installing windows and doors.

For most of architectural works, they are done stage by stage depending on the
completion of main building. For example, architectural works on first floors can be started as
the structural works started on third floor, depending on budgets and work conditions. Most of
work that has been done will be recorded on plan layout to ensure progress can be seen from
time to time.

2.2 Scope of works

As mention above, most of architectural works are done to increase the aesthetic value
and workability of structure. At the same time, they are required to follow the plan that has
been set by client for their satisfaction. Architectural works does not only on-site works, but
also involving documentation.
Some of architecturals works can be seen as stated:

I. Analysing details of structure

This is one of the main part of architectural works, as the must obliged the real
works with one stated in the plan. Usually before any of the work can be done, they
will ensure the materials and material used is suitable and work fine with the structure.
All of the items must be prepared before any works can be done. If there is any
misjudgement during the selection of materials, architectural department can suggest
the best materials to work with the structure to the client, to ensure they satisfied and
achieve the best possible outcome for the projects.

During architectural work is done, a proper monitoring is required to avoid any

mistake during work is still going. If a mistake is realised after a construction work is
done, this will lead to a large scale demolition of that particular part which will lead to
loss and time consuming. For example, during brick laying process, if there is a
damaged brick or unsuitable concrete grade is used, and the mistake is only realised
after the wall part has been fully constructed, the wall need to be demolished and start
over again to remove that particular part.

They also responsible in adding feature to architectural design to improve and

increase the effectiveness of structure. For example, they need to alert on the position
of wall stiffener so each stiffener installed can function optimally and not only focus
only a certain part of the wall. This will help to save cost and time on the construction
process.
II. Documentation and data storage

After a certain work has been done, a proper documentation must be done to see
the progress of works. Usually, they will mark which part that has been completed on
the plan layout. This is easier for inspection to be done by client before any claim
process can be done. A visual documentation makes it easier for them to see the
progress from time to time.

Any changes need to be done to make sure all party are notified to the changes.
Architectural team can request for change of material or design if incompatibility or
risks is found during the inspection This kind of change are usually must be followed
by client mainly for safety issues.
