Title:
Project no.
Objectives
To describe technically how the textile rope used in the Avanti Climb assistance is spliced and
the limits of use.
Conclusions
Textile rope used for Avanti Climb Assistance is technically adequate, and installation
procedure is suitable for this application. Use of this type of rope and splicing method, including
multiple splicings in the same rope has been massively proven in lot of installations.

1. DESCRIPTION
1.1 Climb Assistance description
The Climb Assistance VII device purpose is to help persons to ascend and descend on a
vertical ladder installed in a wind turbine, by relieving them from 35 kg to 45 kg of its weight.
Its use is limited to authorized personnel holding the relevant training certificates. The access
to the wind turbine and consequently to the climbing assistance device is controlled and forbidden to
public access.
The Climb Assistance VII device is used primarily to help technicians to ascend and descend
on a vertical ladder from the bottom platform (lowest possible access point) to the top platform
(nacelle or highest possible access point).
An endless rope runs in loop from the bottom to the top of the ladder, tracked by a motor
installed in the lower end of the wind turbine. In addition to the PPE usually worn, the technician uses
a clamp to get safely fastened to the assistance rope. Pulling force can be adjusted within the 35-45
kg range. The system’s control self-adjusts to follow up with the user climbing pace.

Splicing method is described in the Installation Manual, supplied with each Climb Assistance
unit.
The rope installed in a tower can be spliced several times, so more than one splice can be
found. This is an adequate use, and performance and safety is not affected, as long as the splicing is
done properly following the instructions in the Installation Manual.
Splicing consists basically on inserting the two ends of the rope inside the other end, using a
special needle supplied by Avanti for this purpose.
