Methodology

Research Design

The researchers used a quantitative research design which aims to analyze the data in a statistical
method or numerical way of analyzing.

The study utilized a descriptive-correlational design. Descriptive research design is used to obtain
information concerning the current status of the phenomena to describe "what exists" with respect to
variables or conditions in a situation (Posinasetti , 2014) . Meanwhile, correlation research design
measures , understands and assesses the statistical relationship between two variables with no influence
from any extraneous variable (Bhat,2019). The design is suitable for the study because it describes what
is the level of awareness and Mathematical competency of STEM students in using calculator and also
the relationship between the two variables mentioned.

Locale and Population of the Study

The population of the study is the 124 Senior High School STEM students enrolled in DMMMSU-MLUC
Laboratory High School. The researchers used Slovin's Formula to get the number of total respondents.
Then after determining the predetermined respondents, the researchers used availability or convenience
sampling to find the exact respondents of the study.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The collected data were subjected to data analysis.

The researchers utilized a researcher-made survey questionnaire which is comprised by two parts. The
first part is composed with several questions involving different learning areas of Mathematics which
talks about the awareness of a respondent in using calculator. On the other hand, the second part is
composed with 30-point multiple choice questions which is based on the different learning areas
mentioned on the first part and aims to determine the competency of the students-respondents in using
calculator in Mathematics.

Tools for Data Analysis

In any way possible, everyone who contributed to the writing of this paper has their own importance.
The researchers believe that the following will benefit:

THE STUDENTS

The direct recipients of the output of this research are the students. any improvement on the level of
awareness on using calculator pave the way of producing better learning techniques to improve
mathematical competency among students

THE TEACHERS

through this research, teachers may purposefully discover and understand how the level of
awareness on using calculator can affect the mathematical competency of their students.

THE UNIVERSITY

the study will assist academic administrators and college curriculum in evaluating the mathematical
competency of the students in relation with their awareness on using calculator. In this manner, the
university will be able to make meaningful assessments to the current mathematical performance of the
students through instructional learning strategies so that it can improve the awareness and
mathematical competency of the students.

THE RESEARCHERS

This study will be very beneficial to the researchers to examine and to discover the correlational
relationship between the level of awareness on using calculator and mathematical competency of the
students

THE FUTURE RESEARCHERS


The data gathered may be used as a reference data in conducting new researches or in validation of
other related findings.

Hypotheses

null: the level of awareness of students on using calculator has no affect their mathematical competency

alternative: there is a relationship between the level of awareness on using calculator and the
mathematical competency of the students

Statement of the Problem

The study was pursued to determine the level of awareness and Mathematical Competency of STEM
students in using calculator. The study answers the following questions:

1) What is the level of awareness of STEM students in using calculator?

2) What is the level of Mathematical competency of STEM students in using calculator?

3) What is the relationship between the level of awareness and Mathematical competency of STEM
students in using calculator?
