Academic Standards: Categories Covered PA's standards are divided into categories arranged in two levels: the first is the subject, such as Math or History. Each level is given a number: Math is 2; History is 8. The second level is a category within the subject, such as geometry or Pennsylvania history. Within Math, for example, geometry is indicated as 2.9. In this section of the unit plan list the two-digit numbers and names of the categories this unit will cover. Forexample,” 2.9 Geometry.” PA Academic Standards: Benchmarks/Indieators Covered Each category of the academic standards is further divided into benchmarks by grade level. A third number is added to indicate the grade level. For example, third-grade geometry is indicated as 2.9.3, A fourth level is the benchmark, or description of what a student at that grade should know and be able to do. The fourth level is designated by a leter A. B,C, etc. In this section of the unit plan, list the ‘numerical designation and name ofthe standards and benchmarks this unit addresses. For example, 3.A_ Name and label geometric shapes in one, two, and three dimensions.” Instructional Objectives (Objectives are the teacher's statements of what students will know and be able to do by the end of the lesson or unit. They are specific and observable. For each objective listed, indicate which PA academic benchmark it addresses. (‘Some of the PA benchmarks are specific enough to be used as objectives without much change.) Assessment Assessments are the ways that teachers find out how well students are leaning what they need to know and be able to do. Assessments are on-going, and may be formal or informal. Assessments should inform teaching and support leamin; Learning Opportunities/PROCEDURES These are the instructional activities that students engage in. Learning opportunities are aligned with instructional objectives and assessments, which in tur are aligned with standards and benchmarks. In this section, describe these learning activities briefly and in terms of what students will do: for example, “Students will create a variety of two-dimensional shapes using pencils, compasses, rulers, scissors, and construction paper and arrange them in groups such as triangles, squares, and circles.” Materials Needed Materials and resources that are needed for the lesson, Closing Activity How are you going to wrap up this activity? What knowledge do you want the student to leave the room with, and how will you ensure that they do this? Reflection A few thoughts on the “good/bad/and ugly” ofthe lesson.
