Instructor: Dr. Tan Nguyen

Assignment 4 Due date: Thursday April 9th 2015

Problem 1:

Based on the momentum equation, discuss the theoretical head developed by an impeller. Also, discuss
the differences between the theoretical head performance and the actual head performance of a
centrifugal pump.

Problem 2:
What is the pump thrust? What causes the pump thrust? What are the benefits and disadvantages of
the fixed impellers and the floating impellers?

Problem 3:
The head and the break horsepower of an ESP are tested with water at 3600 RPM and provided by the
manufacturer in the form of polynomial equations as follows

1. Develop a complete performance of this pump (Q-H, Q-HPb, Q-HPh, Q-)

2. This pump will be used to handle n viscous fluid with a viscosity of 44.41 cSt and 25 oAPI.
a. Complete the table below by using Terzo method:
b. Compare the head, break horsepower and efficieny of this pump when handling the viscous
fluid and when handling water.
c. If this pump is operated at 2400 RPM, how does the pump head performance change? Study
this change in two different ways: viscous effects followed by Affinity Laws and Affinity Laws
followed by viscous effects.
d. Compare the results from question C and Stepanoff method at 3600 RPM.
Problem 4: (This problem is for the two class project: ESP and PCP)
Please design a complete ESP and PCP system with the following inputs:
O.D. Casing = 7’’
O.D. EUE 8rd Tubing = 2 7/8’’
Perforation depths = 5,300 ft to 5,400 ft
Pump setting depth = 5,200 ft
Operating fluid level = 200 ft fluid over pump
GOR = 50 scf/B
Bottomhole temperature = 130 oF
Desired volume =1,700 B/D
API gravity = 16
Specific gravity of water = 1.02
Neglect the flowline and the seperator on the surface.
Solution
1-
-Actual head performance is less than the theoretical head performance because the flow
through the impeller is associated with various types of losses. These losses include friction
losses in the impeller, diffusion losses due to the divergence of the passage, fluid shock losses
at the inlet, mixing and eddying losses at the impeller discharge, turning loss due to turning of
the absolute velocity vector, and Separation losses. Also, the flow through the diffuser
associated with same losses. in addition the mechanical losses
- We can get the theoretical head from Euler equation
- the actual head is calculated by experimental data.
