SECTION C
Instructions
è Solve all questions.
è Solve the questions in the same sequence.
è Answers should be brief and to the point.
è Last date of submission is 24/09/2010.

Q1
a] Explain how the motion of a charged particle parallel to a uniform electric field is like the fall of a body under gravity.
b] Define Lorentz force. Explain the motion of an electron in a uniform electric field perpendicular to the initial velocity of the
electron.

Q2
a] Show that magnetic deflection sensitivity of a CRT is inversely proportional to the accelerating potential of the anode.
b] Draw a schematic diagram of a CRO and explain the roles of the grid and the anodes in focussing the electron beam. Explain
how the deflection sensitivity of Y plates can be enhanced in a CRT.

Q3
a] An electron accelerated by electric potential of 400(V) passes through a region of magnetic field 2 x 10-4 HTL. The region extends
1(m) along the direction of initial motion of the electron. Find the angle in degrees through which the electron deviates.
b] A beam of protons is accelerated by a uniform electric field of magnitude 4(kV/m) over a distance of 25(cm). It then passes
through a region of electric field E of strrength 0.1(kV/m) and directed perpendicular to motion of the beam. In the same region
there is a magnetic field B directed perpendicular both to E and the beam. FInd |B| if the beam goes undeviated.

Q4
a] A proton travelling with velocity v strikes the plane boundary of a region of uniform magnetic field directed perpendicular to v.
Also, the angle between v and the normal to the boundary at the point of incidence is Θ. The proton emerges from the region through
the same plane boundary with velocity u. Find the angle between u and v.
b] A proton, a deuterium ion and an alpha particle are accelerated through the same electric potential differenceand then eneter a
region of uniform magnetic field directed perpendicular to their velocities. If r p , rd and rΑ are the radii of the circular paths
followed by these particles after entering the field region, find the ratios r p ‘ rd and rd rΑ .

Q5
a] Estimate de-Broglie wavelengths of (i) a hydrogen molecule in hydrogen gas at 300(K) in a glass jar; (ii)a particle of mass
1(Μgram) in a colloidal suspension in water at 675(K); and (iii) a 10(g) coin after it has fallen from rest under gravity for 1(s).
b] A beam of protons travelling with a constant speed u parallel to the X axis, occupies the entire half-space to the left of the YZ
plane at t=0. At this time it strikes the YZ plane, which is opaque to protons except for a small rectangular opening of size 2mm x
1mm centered on the origin with its longer side parallel to the Y axis. After the beam passes through the opening to the right of the
YZ plane, what are the uncertainties Dv y and Dv z in the y and the z componentsof velocity of a proton in the beam? What were the
values of Dv y and Dv z before the beam passed through the opening?
