My Scholars challenge

This problem is about systems of linear inequalities, systems of equations, elimination,

and substitution. The given information that the problem includes is the total amount of tickets

available for the game which is 800 tickets, tickets that are going to be sold before the game and

after the game, and the amount of money the team hopes to raise. While reading this problem I

am trying to find out how many tickets can be sold before the day of the game so that they can

make enough money to meet their goal.

My first step was to fill in my PQCS chart to get me started off with the problem. I

predicted that I will be using elimination and substitution for this problem. I took this step

because I wanted to organize my work to see how I will start off by solving it in the Clarify

section. So I planned out to do Guess and check and set up a table. I selected random numbers

that will match 800 tickets in total for before game day and after game day. I also made sure that

it will meet the $5000 goal they want to meet.

Mathematical evidence

# of tickets sold # of tickets sold $ before game $ on game day Total

before the on gameday day
game.

400 400 $2400 $3600 $6000

512 288 $3072 $2592 $5664

580 220 $3480 $1980 $5460

700 100 $4200 $900 $5100

725 75 $4350 $675 $5025

733 67 $4398 $603 $5001✔✔

My second step is while reading the problem several of times I made a systems of

equations. I know that you can use substitution for the problem. I took this step because I know

that the problem is elimination and i need to multiply -6 to the equation x+y=800 so I can cancel

out -6x to the equation 6x+9y_>5000. What I know is that 6x represents the tickets that are

going to be sold before game day and I know that 9y is the tickets that are going to sold on

game day. It has to be greater than or equal to $5000 so that they can meet their goal to see

how many tickets they can sell before the day of the game. But after I do elimination I can put

the equation x+y=800 to y=mx+b form by canceling x and putting it on the other side which

makes the equation to y=800-x.

Mathematical Evidence

Equations:

6x+9y_>5000➡ 6x+9y=5000

x+y=800➡ y=800-x

My third step was to solve the problem by using the equations I have. Sice for my guess

and check I got that you can sell 733 tickets before game day and 67 tickets on game day l

plugged it in the equation but i also solved the equations to make sure that my answer is

correct. I took this step because i wanted to find out how many tickets can be sold before the

day of the game.

Mathematical evidence

Elimination plugged it into one of the equations.

6x+9y=5000 y=800-x

-6x-6y=-4800 67=800-x

3y=200 800-76

3= 3 x=733
y=67

So I know that the day of the game they have to sell 67 or higher to meet their $5000

goal. If they sell less than 67 tickets they will not be able to meet their goal. But also with selling

the 67 tickets they make $5001 to reach their goal which is greater than $5000. So I know than

x= 733 tickets that were sold for $6 each before the game and y=67 sold on game day that cost

$9 each. As a result of completing this problem I learned that I can apply this to a job that i want

to apply for and see which one is a better job by finding which job pays more.
