PRO

 DIRECTED TOWARDS PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS “Therefore, no homework/

assignment shall be given during weekends for pupils to enjoy their childhood, and spend
quality time with their parents without being burderned by the thought of doing lots of
homework”

 Child Friendly School System aims to promote child centered teaching, children’s health and
non-discriminatory and protective practices.

CON

 People believed that this violates the educators’ academic freedom to give the students the best
education.
 Homework helps develop self-discipline and not make their lives harder. Students learn time
management and become responsible.
 Parents can use assignments to spend quality time with their kids.
 Republic Act 1982 “Right to Education” which protects and promotes the right of all citizens to
quality education.

CON (Negative)

Education Act of 1982 or The Right to Education aims to protect and promote the right of all citizens
to quality education. However, if the child will not be at his best condition, will he still be able to achieve
the quality education he deserves?

On 2010, DepEd Memo no. 392 “No Weekend Homework Policy” was implemented under Educ. Sec
Bro. Armin Luistro. It states that no homework shall be given during weekends for the students to enjoy
their childhood and spend quality education with their parents.

However, having free time on weekends doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a time for them to relax.
DepEd Usec. Anne Sevilla said that education has to be holistic meaning time for personal development
is very important.

But free time for students are being spent online and on social media. Eleazardo Kasilag, President
of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools and Administration affirms this by adding that social
media ruins the image of table education. He added that cybercrime, addition, depression and all that
happens even during vacation of students.

Moreso. Teachers' Dignity Coalition president Benjo Basas believe that the DepEd memorandum is
unnecessary and it violates the educators’ academic freedom to give the students the best education. In
an interview he said that teachers would know their students’ capacity. He also said that Homeworks
are not supposed to be a burden and that it can be used to teach students self-discipline, time
management, and responsibility. Crucial characteristics that the students need to exhibit when
adulating.

Lastly, parents can use assignments to spend quality time with their kids. We can meet in the
middle, and not limit the quality education that the children need.

DepEd Undersecretary Anne Sevilla said children need time for self-care and that education has to
be holistic meaning time for personal development is very crucial. It’s also important to note that during
the ages 6-12, major developmental transition happens. And so the roles of the parents in honing their

Study time on weekends should be a habit and not a mandatory rule. Moreso, we are not
completely eliminating assignments but rather we are limiting the number to give the students enough
time to rest.

In a study entitled “The Impact of stress on students’ physical and mental health and Academic
success” by Shankar and Park on 2016, it suggests that there are direct and indirect ways that stress
affects students’ physical and psychological health. This study affirms the need for the implementation
of the DepEd memo.

To uphold the The Right to Education, UNICEF and DepEd implemented the Child Friendly School
System. The DepEd Memorandum is an attempt to follow that and also to ensure that the children will
have less worries and stress, and so in the end we will be able to produce globally competitive and
educated citizens of our society.
