Education Technology II

Chapter 5

Software for Educators and Students

This chapter details on the system and application software which help administrators, teachers, and
students electronically meet the end of their products. This chapter introduces the different application
software that allow students and teachers to enhance skills in producing creative outputs such as reports,
presentations, record keeping and many other.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the two types of software,
2. Compare and contrast the two types of software; and
3. Give reasons on how software can contribute to the teaching- learning process.
PRESENTING THE LESSON

What is software?

Software is a program or system that tells the computer what to do. There are two types
of software: System Software and Application Software.
The System Software
 It is the operating system that is found or bundled inside all computer machines.
 It consists all the programs that control the operations of the computer and its
devices.
 It serves as the interface between the user, application software and the
hardware.

HARDWARE
SYSTEM SOFTWARE

APPLICATION
SOFTWARE USER
OPERATING SYSTEM
 It contains instruction that coordinate all of the activities of the computer
hardware devices. It also contains instruction that allows the user to run the
application software.
TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
1. Stand- Alone Operating Systems
This is a complex operating system that works on a desktop computer, notebook
computers, and mobile computing device
Examples: A. Windows: Microsoft Windows- it is the most known operating system.
(Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10)
B. MAC OS X- an operating system that is only available for computers
which are manufactured by Apple. (MAC OS Tiger, MAC OS Leopard, MAC OS X Lion,
etc.)
2. Embedded Operating System- The kind of operating system resides in an internal
chip rather than a hard drive. This is the operating system used on mobile devices and
other electronics.
Examples: A. iOS (iPhone OS)- an operating system developed by Apple and used in
the iPod Touch, iPhone, and Apple TV. iOS based apps are available to download at
the Apple App Store.
B. Google Android- designed for mobile devices. This operating system is
being used in more than 20 different types of mobile devices including tablet computers.
C. Blackberry OS- developed by Research in Motion for Blackberry’s line of
smartphones.
3. Emerging Operating Systems- it has the potential to revolutionize computing.
Example: Google Chrome OS- it is based on Google Android which is designed to
work exclusively with web- based applications and to run on Chromebook computers.
The Application Software
• Application software or application programs allow users to perform specific
tasks like writing documents, making project presentations, video recording and
many others.
The Types Application Software used in Schools-
The software that are of great help in accomplishing activities in schools. The different
types of software that support education technology in school settings include
Instructional Software, Productivity Software, and Administrative Software.
INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE
These are programs designed specifically to deliver instruction or aid with the delivery of
instruction. It is intended to teach skills or information through demonstrations,
examples, explanations, or problem solving.
Examples: A. Tutorial Software- a software that teaches the users about new
concepts. It guides the users from the start to the end of learning.
B. Drill and Practice Software- Provides exercises in which students work
on items one at a time and receive feedback on their correctness. It strengthens
students’ skills by providing them repetitive tasks until they master the concept or idea.
C. Simulations- it allows the student to experience what is it like and learn
how it should be done in real world situation.
D. Instructional Games- used to motivate learners in learning a concept or
topic. It motivates learner via the challenge of competition, and provide different levels
of complexity that match player’s ability.
E. Problem Solving Software- provides opportunities to practice solving
various kinds of content area problems.
F. Special Needs Software- designed for students with learning disabilities
to assist them in carrying out school tasks. It includes speech synthesis, text
enlargement programs, talking calculators and others.
PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE
It is designed to help teachers and students in creating reports, computing of grades,
communicating, etc.
Examples: A. Word Processing Software- the most widely used application
software.(e.g. Microsoft Word, .docx)
B. Electronic Spreadsheet Software- allows user to recognize numeric
data in rows and columns (Microsoft Excel, .xlsx)
C. Presentation Software- designed to communicate and display
information including texts, audio and video elements in slideshow format. (MS
Powerpoint, .ppt)
D. Graphics and Multimedia Software- allows professionals to design
work that is intended for their own field of specialization. (Paint, Windows Movie Maker,
Adobe Photoshop)
ADMINISTRATIVE SOFTWARE-
This software is used to at schools to establish and strengthen record keeping and
exchanges of information among various institutions and agencies. (cic.dyndns)
