Parent Information Night – Religious Education Script

Slide 1: Good evening parents and guardians, my name is Mr Menezes and I am your child’s
teacher in Year Five Gold. I hope you are all keeping well and that your child has settled
comfortably into the classroom. In today’s information night, you will be shown a snapshot
into the Year 5G environment, curriculum, Religious Education and school policies.

Before we begin our meeting, I would like to begin with a prayer.

Slide 2: At your tables, a prayer card is placed for you to follow along. Today’s prayer is
based on the importance of values that we share.

All: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Leader: Catholic schools are built on values. Through their lessons and programs, through
the Religious Education they offer, and through the ways in which teachers and pupils relate
to each other, Catholic schools continually teach certain values. But values are most
effectively learnt in our homes. Let us pray then that our teachers and parents will teach the
values of Jesus.

All: Lord Jesus, help us all become better teachers of values.

Let us teach the value of love without which children cannot grow.
Let us teach the value of justice which sets children free from the forces that hold and bind
and limit their growth.
Let us teach forgiveness that re-unites and makes us whole again.
And let us teach hope in a glorious future and in a God that has carved our name in the palm
of His hand.
And bless this meeting of ours. May it be energised by the values of your Kingdom.

Leader: St Joseph
All: Pray For Us
All: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN

Slide 3: Thank you for your reverence during the prayer service. An important aspect of a
Catholic school is that the parent is the first educator, hence it is a privilege to have you all
in attendance.

During this term, each day, students will complete 30 minutes of Religious Education
lessons. This term, 2 Religious Education Units of Work will be covered:
- We are Called
- Choosing to Do Good.

In today’s presentation, we will be focusing on the first unit: ‘We are Called’.
Slide 4: At your tables, you have a letter about the ‘We are Called’ Unit of Work. In this
Religious Education Unit of Work, the following topics will be covered:
1. The meaning of work and how humans’ work can help care for others, creation and
ourselves.
2. Jesus’s special work to assist humans to develop a close relationship with God. Jesus
shares His work through the Sacrament of Baptism.
3. The importance of the Third and Seventh Commandments in our lives.

Slide 5: The Religious Education Curriculum is a unique as it has a rich history. In Religious
Education, students are not assessed on their faith. However, they are assessed on their
knowledge of the content covered.

In this unit, students will complete an iMovie slideshow on their chosen Saint which will be
completed over two weeks. A copy of this assessment has already been uploaded unto
Seesaw. This assignment will prepare students who will be completing their Confirmation in
Year 6.

Slide 6: As with all aspects of the classroom, your assistance and time taken to assist your
child with engaging with the curriculum is amazing. I have come up with a few activities that
you may like to complete with your child. These activities include:
- When allocating family chores, discuss with your child how each chore assists the
environment, others and the individual
- Create an affirmation wall in your child’s bedroom, where they can write positive
notes about their special gifts and talents.
- If you, your child or friend/family member has been baptised, share your memories
of the Sacrament. In Week 4, students will be asked to bring a photo of their Baptism
to class.

Slide 7: In the ‘We are Called’ unit, students will be learning about the Sacrament of
Baptism. At a Baptism, when the priest anoints the child with oil he says: “I Baptise you
(name), in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’.

On the coloured strip of card in front of you, you will write this phrase (which is on the
board).

Once you have finished writing this phrase, I will staple the cards together to create a prayer
chain.

The main purpose of this activity is to show how Baptism is a Sacrament that brings people
together in an unbreakable bond with God and Jesus Christ.

Your child will be completed a similar activity to this in the classroom.

We will now be moving unto the English Curriculum….
