ABSTRACT
The present scientific-technological research project is part of the application of renewable energies,
specifically in the use of hydraulic turbomachines for power generation. The research project is funded by
the National Fund for Scientific, Technological and Technological Innovation Development (FONDECYT).
The objective is to analyze the behavior of a centrifugal reaction pump working as a turbine, and compare
its performance with a conventional turbine. This will take place in a test rig that will be designed and
installed in the laboratory of hydraulic machines of the Deparment of Mechanical Engineering in the
UNSAAC.
The research project is being developed currently, specifically in the multidisciplinary design phase in the
mechanical, electrical and control domains. The components of the test rig are designed according to VDI
2221 directive (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure), considering the particularity of the project that it will be
carried out in the city of Cusco (3400 m.a.s.l.), hoping to obtain results that generate an impact in the regional
and national energy sector.
We can conclude that this alternative for power generation is efficient always when the equipment are
selected properly, searching the best efficient point (BEP) of a pump working as a turbine.[1] So also,
according to the bibliographical references, pumps as turbines have advantages over conventional hydraulic
turbines like low cost, less complexity, mass production, market availability, availability for a wide range
of heads and flows, etc.[2]
