11th /12thMay 2019 – 4th Sunday of Easter
Dear Parishioners,
During the Easter Season, we have the
passages from the Acts of the Apostles and
St John Gospel. Today we see Paul and
Barnabas move on from Perga and reached
Antioch. On the sabbath, the ‘whole town’
turned out to listen to Paul and Barnabas to
hear the word of God. But soon opposition
to them arose. Out of jealousy, at seeing
such a crowd, the Jews used blasphemies
and contradicted everything Paul said. Paul
was speaking boldly of the message of Jesus
to all who wished to listen.
The opposition grew against Paul and
Barnabas, so much so, that they both shook
the dust of their feet and moved on to
Iconium. Those who believed in God’s word
were happy with the witness Paul and
Barnabas gave. Sometime we need to have
the wisdom to know when to accept
oppositon, cut our losses, and make a new
start.
St John in his gospel today gives us the
image of Jesus as the shepherd and of his
people as the flock, He knows each one of us
intimately. He knows our joys and our
fears; our deepest desires; our difficulties
and our pain. It does not always seem like
that. Sometimes we feel Jesus has
abandoned us and deserted us. But so often
this is our “feeling” rather than the reality of
God’s love for us. Jesus doesn’t have moods
where he is really excited about us and then
is too ‘busy’ to care! Jesus is constant in his
love. It is we who feel and think differently,
especially in times of crisis or sorrow. We
really need to reflect on this reality, so not
to be thrown when things get difficult in life.
Could we spend a few moments each
day during this coming week to reflect on, to
pray about the closeness of Jesus to us at all
times. Keep the words of Jesus in your
minds: “The sheep that belong to me listten
to my voice … I give them eternal life … and
no one will ever steal them from me”. We
belong to Jesus at all times. God never
abandons us. Let us remember that truth.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION:
Congratulations to our young people who
celebrate the Sacrament this Saturday
evening. Thanks to Bishop John Sherrington
for being with us.
On Sunday we will have the
Thanksgiving Mass for our First Communion
children. We continue to pray for all our
young people.
UPDATE OF HUNGER STRIKERS:
There has been a breakthrough in the case
of the Kurdish Leader, Abdullah Öcalan. His
lawyers were allowed to visit him for one
hour and gave a Press Conference earlier
this week. Mr Öcalan indicated that he
didn’t want anyone to die in showing
solidarity to him. The Kurdish leaders await
an indication that lawyers will be able to
visit their client again very soon. The
hunger strikes will continue until a
guarantee is given. So we await the
outcome.
 CAMINO WALK SPONSORSHIP: Our
Fundraising goup thought it would be a
good idea if the 100K pilgrimage that Sr.
Devy and I will be up for sponsorship.

PEACE AWARD: Thanks to the 9/10
who indicated they are attending the PAX
Christi Peace Award I will receive on
Saturday 18th. Many thanks.

June at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall.

EASTER CONCERT: “TIME TO RISE”
The Verbum Dei missionaries and friends
would like to invite everyone for an
afternoon of prayer through music and art
in an Easter concert on
Sunday, 19th May at 2pm in
St. John Vianney church,
followed by light refreshment in the hall
afterwards. Suggested donation: £5/person.
All proceed of this fundraising event will
support young adults on an 8-day walking
pilgrimage (from Rome to Assisi) and
mission immersion experience with street
children in the Philippines.
Tickets will be available after Masses this
weekend.

PRIEST TRAINING FUND
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday, the day
we pray for priests and for vocations to the
priesthood. The annual collection for the
Priest Training Fund will take place next
weekend. Your generous donation helps
ensure we can support these men who are
called to be like Christ the Good Shepherd.

the church. Please take one home, read the
information, and bring it back next weekend
