Section 1: Analyze the Model in STAAD.Pro

Section Description
In this section, you will learn how to analyze a concrete structure in STAAD.Pro in preparation to designing the concrete elements in
the STAAD.Pro Advanced Concrete Design RCDC.

Skills Taught
 Analyze the Model in STAAD.Pro

Analyze the STAAD.Pro Model
In this exercise, you will learn how to open a STAAD.Pro model and perform the analysis. An analysis in STAAD.Pro must be
performed before importing any of the model elements into the STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC.

1. Open ConcreteDesign.std in STAAD.Pro.

2. In STAAD.Pro, notice that the following information has already been modeled in STAAD.Pro:
 Properties: Section Properties for all of the members in the model have been provided.

 Specifications: Member Offsets and Property Reduction Factors have been modeled as appropriate. Rigid Diaphragms have
been modeled at each level.

 Supports: Fixed Supports have been modeled at the base of each column.

 Loads: Seismic Load, Dead Load, Live Load, and Roof Live Load have been defined as load cases.

 Materials: The Concrete Material has been assigned to each member in the model.

 Analysis: The P-Delta Analysis Command has already been added to the input file.

 Design: No concrete design commands are required in STAAD.Pro. We will be designing the concrete elements in the
STAAD.Pro Advanced Concrete Design RCDC.

3. In the View toolbar, click on the 3D Rendered View icon.

Notice that the concrete shear walls

were modeled as members in
STAAD.Pro. (The length of the walls
was specified as the YD property.)
When this model is imported into the
STAAD Advanced Concrete Design
RCDC, the columns and walls will be
designed together.

STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC for design. The RCDC can also import a STAAD.Pro model and it can be used as a
standalone application.

The STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC can design and detail the following types of concrete elements:

 Concrete Slabs

 Concrete Beams

 Concrete Columns and Shear Walls

 Open Footings

 Pile Caps

5. In the STAAD Analysis and Design dialog, select the Stay in Modeling Mode radio button and then click Done.
6. In the menu bar, click File > Exit. The model must be closed before it can be imported into the STAAD Advanced Concrete Design
RCDC.

STAAD Advanced Concrete Design

RCDC reads the beam and column
geometry from STAAD files. From this
geometry, it identifies all the enclosed
regions within the geometry which could
be slabs. This will include actual cut-outs
and slabs. RCDC also works out the
spanning type (1-way, 2-way, or
cantilever) and the continuity of each and
every slab.

Define the Slab Loads and Thickness
Imposed and live load have to be entered for each slab. Thickness of slabs is optional. If a thickness is defined, the slab will be
designed and checked for the provided thickness. If not then the minimum slab thickness satisfying all criterion will be designed.

1. Continue with the model from the previous exercise.

2. In the Design Data tab, enter the following information for each slab:
 Imposed Load: 0.5 kN/SqM

 Live Load: 2.5 kN/SqM

 Thickness: 305 mm

Specify the Concrete Slab Settings
In this exercise, you will learn how to specify the following concrete slab design settings:

 Detailing Style: Slabs can be detailed with curtailed rebars (separate top and bottom reinforcement) OR with bent up rebars.

 Preferred Span / D: Slab thicknesses are governed by deflection criteria.

 Concrete and Steel Grade: Enter the concrete and steel material properties will be used for the design of the cross section.

 Minimum Slab Thickness: Enter the least acceptable thickness of any slab.

 Detailing Options: Auto-detailing of slabs can be done with reference to a defined preferred rebar diameter or rebar spacing.

 Curtailment Location: Preferred curtailment locations for both bottom and top steel can be defined as a factor of the length of the
slab.

 Available Rebar Diameters: List the available rebars that can be specified.

 Rebar Spacing: Enter the minimum and maximum rebar spacing can be set the round off factor for the actual rebar spacing that
can be defined.

Preferred Span/d: The preferred Span / D ratio can be specified for slabs of
different continuities. RCDC will try to design slabs within the
 Cantilever: 7
preferred thickness. The design iterations will start from the
 Simply Supported: 20 minimum thickness specified. For thicknesses less than that
arrived by the preferred Span / D, the deflection and shear will
 Continuous: 26 be checked for the designed flexural reinforcement. For the
preferred thickness and more, RCDC will increase the
 Two-Way Slab, Simply Supported: 28 percentage of tension reinforcement to satisfy the deflection
and / or the shear check criteria if required.
 Two-Way Slab, Continuous: 32

Material Property

 Concrete Grade: C20

 Steel Grade: Fy420

Design the Concrete Slabs
In this exercise, you will learn how to design the concrete slabs in the STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC mode using the
following commands:

 Design > Auto Design command

 Modify > Design command

Slabs in STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC are designed for the Imposed Load and Live Load values input for each slab on
the Design Data table. These values are imported (along with the slab properties) from the slab parameters specified in the
STAAD.Pro Building Planner Mode.

1. Continue with the model from the previous exercise.

2. In the menu bar, click Design > Auto Design.

STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC can design 1-way, 2-way and cantilever slabs. Each slab is designed and checked for:

 Flexure

 Shear

 Deflection

All of the slabs will be designed in one run and the design results, including the suggested slab thickness, and suggested
reinforcement will be displayed in the Design Output tab.

3. In the Design Table, highlight the slab S1.

4. In the menu bar, click Modify > Design. The STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC allows you to design slabs by three
methods:

 Analysis and Design: With this option, the analysis of the slab is done as per the coefficients for bending moments and shear
for one way and two way slabs. Slab loading with be UDL over the entire slab.

 Only Design: This option is to be used in case the analysis of the slab has all ready been done. The design can be performed
for values of bending moments and shear force entered directly.

 Multiple Imposed Loading: This option is available for 1-Way and Cantilever slabs only. In this option, you can analyze and
design slabs for multiple loads applied along the length (partially/fully) on the slab. The load types possible are UDL, Point
Loads, and Triangular loads.

In the Design Slab window, click on the Can icon.

8. In the Design table, highlight the reinforcement for the rest of the slabs. Right-click and then select Paste Reinforcement from the
pop-up menu.

Notice that the STAAD Advanced Concrete Design RCDC replaced all of the reinforcement where the new reinforcement layout
was acceptable. The optimized reinforcement remained where the new reinforcement was not acceptable.
