Mursion Reflection
SCED 499

In terms of this lesson, I’d say one of the only moments that went according completely

to plan was my assessment question at the end. The students gave me the answers that I was

hoping they would in relation to the question asked and materials covered. I think this was

because the question was very open ended and each student could give an answer that was

neither correct nor incorrect. In terms of what could’ve gone better, just the overall flow of class

and the interactions with the students. This includes speaking to the students in more positive,

encouraging tones and to be weary of instances where the students were not on task and thus not

learning. This can be achieved as simply as saying “a great response Ethan, I like that you used

details in your answer.” Finally, having a wider view of what is happening in the classroom in

terms of what students are doing is something that can be improved.

Observers complimented my speaking voice, pacing and assessment. I take pride in the

compliment of a good speaking voice because it is such an essential component of teaching

effectively. Again, my assessment activity question was also praised which is, in part, due to its

open-endedness. If I was to do this lesson again, I would be wearier of what students are doing

while I’m an not looking. During my read aloud of the excerpt, students were off task and thus

not learning. Potentially next time, if possible, have the students read it via popcorn reading or

with a partner to minimize he chances of distractions taking place. The most obvious standards

seen in this small lesson are standards 1 and 2 focusing on learner development and differences.

Since this is not a group that we can develop real connection to, this is on the fly adaptation to

their differences and how they develop most efficiently as students. Each of these students learn
differently, some with collaboration, some with close reading, whatever method they prefer, it is

up to the instructor to learn and adapt to what the students find most comfortable for them.
