PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM

Year Level Unit Title Human development topic Jesus/Salvation Topic

5 We Are Called Human Work Baptism
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
Individuals all have their own gifts and talents which make them unique. God wants individuals to be workers of Christ to contribute in developing
themselves through their gifts, society and creation (A1). Throughout life, individuals can identify the ways in which God cares and works within creation
(A2, A3). Jesus was a human being who worked and lived a life like all human beings. On his time on earth, Jesus worked to build a deeper and closer
relationship between humanity and God (B1). In Jesus’s ministry, He called members to God’s family through Baptism to continue His work (B2). In the Rite
of Baptism, it explores the key components of the Sacrament. These components include: the life of God in the baptised person, freedom from original sin
and membership in God’s family, the Church (C1). As a Baptised person, the Sacrament focuses on how the individual can work to continue the special
work of Jesus in the community (C2). A major focus is placed on following the Third and Seventh Commandments. As Baptised individuals, we should
continue to live a life like Jesus (C3). Catholics are encouraged to continue Christ’s mission through Baptism (C4)

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting

My family has a strong Catholic faith that has played a major part in my life and my identity. A tradition my family maintains, is attending Mass
every Saturday night. At the Mass, I am involved in a range of different ministries; altar serving, reading and special minister. Through these
acts of service to my Parish Community, I am assisting in Christ’s special work (B1.1). One of the main reasons why I decided to become a
teacher was to enrich the life of the young students and live the message of Christ (A1). Teaching is a vocation, which is a call from God.
Through my teaching experiences, I endeavour to use my Catholic views as a compass in guiding the children on their learning journey. I strive
to evangelise the Good News of Christ to all those around. Throughout my life, I endeavour to live a life like Jesus and care for those who are
less fortunate and accept everyone for who they are.

I currently belong to the St Joseph’s Parish (Queens Park/East Cannington) which is run by the Norbertine Canons and work at the Parish
schools (St Joseph’s Primary and St Norbert College). Having attended these schools as a student, my beliefs and values are heavily
influenced by the Norbertine Canons and Mercy Sisters (C2.1.). A value I cherish from the Norbertine Canons is a sense of community.
Through my daily actions and experiences, I like to develop a sense of community with Christ at its centre. As School Chaplain at St Joseph’s
Primary School, I work to use these values to assist students who are experiencing difficult moments in their life. Like Jesus, I use my special
work to treat everyone decently with respect and care (A1 & A2).

At the age of 15, I had an opportunity to spend 3 weeks travelling through the Holy Land. During this time, I got to walk through the places
stated in the Old and New Testaments. A highlight from this trip was having the opportunity to renew my baptismal promises at the River
Jordan. The River Jordan is an important place in the New Testament, where Jesus was baptised by His cousin St John the Baptist (C1).
Visiting places such as the Stations of the Cross, Bethlehem, Mt Tabor and Nazareth strengthened my faith in the Catholic Tradition. At the
end of the Holy Land experience, my family and I had the opportunity to climb Mt Sinai. In the Old Testament, Moses received the Ten
Commandments on Mt Sinai. On the journey, it made me appreciate the true essence and meaning of the Biblical stories (C3)

My family has a strong devotion to Our Lady & the Holy Rosary and recite the Rosary every Friday during the months of May & October. At the
age of 11, my family and I had the opportunity to visit Lourdes, Fatima, Paris. At these sites, our Lady appeared to people. During my visits to
the religious sites, my family and I recited the Holy Rosary and spent time in prayer (C2.2).

PLANNED ASSESSMENT - 1 formal assessment that links to a key understanding or learning point, develops higher order thinking skills and comprehensively assesses
student learning. Include how you would record the student achievement and how you would use this information for future teaching.

Key Understanding: C2.2: Identifies ways Mary and the saints shared in the special work of Jesus

In Lessons 3 and 4 (Week 4), students will begin working on their Saints Project. In this Students are required to research a saint that is important to them and
present the information in an iMovie image slideshow. The iMovie should include the following information:
- Name of the Saint
- Date of Birth
- Early Life
- Works of Jesus Christ
- Death
- Legacy
- Images

The iMovie will go for 1-2 minutes. Students will be completed over 2 weeks. They will have 2 lessons in class to work on this assignment. The rest of the
assignment will be completed in their own time.

To focus on the students’ literacy skills, they will be required to write a script of the information which will be used to aid the narration. Research is a major
aspect of this assessment. Students are provided with list of websites. However, they are required to use books from the library to assist their research. To
become critical writers, students are required to cite all the information in a Bibliography.

An assessment marking rubric has been attached to the assessment task for the students to use to guide them in the creation of the slideshow. The teacher
will use this rubric to assess the students.
