Special Populations Philosophy

I believe that including every student in the classroom is crucial to success. This means

including and accommodating to all students no matter their disabilities, impairments, or

hardships. As an aspiring teacher, I find it critical to know and understand every students’ unique

social and personal needs as well as their specific interests. I believe that all students need to be

encouraged and motivated, and that it is a teacher’s responsibility to help all students reach their

full potential.

A child with a disability is a child first, and I aspire to make this obvious in my teaching

career. No matter the impairment, disability, disorder, injury, or illness I want to make my future

students feel welcome, safe, and comfortable. I want my classroom to be inviting and successful

for every student that comes through my door. Children deserve an education that uplifts and

empowers them; they deserve an education that will aid them in their future and allow them to be

successful. Students who have learning and/or behavior problems, physical disabilities, sensory

impairments, or students who are intellectually gifted and talented all deserve an equal

opportunity to grow and succeed in a classroom along with their fellow peers.

I will be sure to incorporate appropriate language and interaction with students who have

disabilities, as well as be sure that other students understand what is appropriate or not

appropriate. I will protect my students’ right to privacy and confidentiality, and I will be sure to

meet all reasonable accommodations to allow my students to be successful. I will provide

accommodations to students with AD/HD, sensory impairments, mobility impairments, learning

disabilities and any other student needs so that I can positively facilitate and improve student

learning.

With population diversity continuously rising in the United States, I will be sure to

address the needs of students with limited English proficiency (LEP). I hope to assist and

accommodate English Language Learners (ELL) to help them succeed. I understand that some

students who may appear to be proficient in English might find it difficult to understand and

communicate in the classroom, therefore I will be sure to address their needs and accommodate

as needed to positively improve their learning environment. My goal is to encourage class

participation as well as partner discussion to motivate English Language Learners (ELL). I will

be sure to give language minority students an opportunity to share about their cultures and

special interests.

To have successful students, I must have a positive and welcoming classroom for all

students. Whether gifted, talented, disabled, impaired, limited, or homeless I will see them as a

person first. My classroom will be a multicultural classroom where students will meet their full

potential and fully benefit from their education. I will see my students as remarkable, important

individuals, and I will do my best to assist them and accommodate as needed. No matter the

problems and limitations my classroom will face, we will learn and grow together as every

student reaches their full potential.
