Answer all FIVE full Questions, choosing one full question from each part.
Q1. Box A contains 9 numbered cards 1 to 9 and box B contains 5 cards (6 M) CO:1
numbered 1 to 5. A box is selected at random and a card is randomly
chosen from the box. If the number is even, find the probability that the
card came from box A.
(OR)
Q2. A bag contains three coins, one of which is coined with two heads, (6 M) CO:1
while the other two coins are normal and not biased. A coin is chosen at
random from the bag and tossed four times in successions. If head turns
up each time, what is the probability that this is the two headed coin?
Q3. Derive the mean and standard deviation of a binomial distribution (6 M) CO:2
(OR)
Q4. Derive the mean and standard deviation of a normal distribution (6 M) CO:2
Q6. In a certain factory producing optical lenses, there is a small chance (6 M) CO:2
1/500 for any one lens to be defective. The lenses are supplied in
packets of 10. Use Poisson distribution to calculate the approximate
number of packets containing no defective, 1 defective and 2 defective
lenses respectively in lot of 20,000 packets.
Q7. There are 64 beds in a garden and 3 seeds of a particular type of flower (6 M) CO:2
are shown in each bed. The probability of a flower being white is 1/4.
Find the number of beds with 3, 2, 1 and 0 white flowers
(OR)
Q8. A study was conducted on 100 patients to find the duration of life of a (6 M) CO:1
particular virus causing disease. The following results were obtained µ
=.12 hrs, σ. = 3 hrs. Assuming the data to be normally distributed, what
percentage of virus are expected to have life? i) more than 15 hrs
ii) less than 6 hrs iii) between 10-14 hrs.
Q9. Assume that on the average one telephone number out of 15 called (6 M) CO:2
between 2pm to 5pm on weekdays is busy. What is the probability that
if 6 randomly selected telephone numbers are called :
