In the �r� Caitanya Upani�ad it is said:

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, the supreme enjoyer, whose form
is transcendental, who is beyond the touch of the three modes of material nature,
and who is the all-pervading Supersoul residing in the hearts of all living
entities, will appear again in the Kal� age. Appearing as the greatest devotee, the
Supreme Personality of Godhead will assume a two-armed form of golden complexion in
His abode of Goloka V�nd�vana manifested on the bank of the Ga�ga� at Navadv�pa. He
will disseminate pure devotional service in the world. This incarnation of the Lord
is described in the following verses.

gauro rakta-�y�mala-�veta-r�pa�
caitany�tm� sa va� caitanya-�aktir
bhakt�k�ro bhakti-do bhakti-vedya�

eka�-one; deva�-Supreme Personality of Godhead; sarva-r�p�-all forms; mah�tm�-


the great soul; gaura�-fair; rakta-�y�mala-�veta-red, black, and white; r�pa�-whose
forms; caitany�tm�-Lord Caitanya; sa-He; vai-indeed; caitanya-�akti�-transcendental
potency of knowledge; bhakt�k�ra�-the form of a devotee; bhakt�-da�-giving
devotional ser�ice; bhakt�-vedya�-known by devotional service.

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the master of all transcendental


potencies, and who may be known only by devotional service, appears in innumerable
transcendental forms. He has appeared with red, white, and black complexions, and
He will also appear in the golden form of �r� Caitanya Mah�prabhu. He will assume
the role of a perfect devotee and He will teach the conditioned souls the path of
pure devotional service.

nama�-obeisances; vedanta-vedy�ya-known by Vedanta; k����ya-Lord K���a;


param�tmane-the Supersoul; sarva-caitanya-r�p�ya-the master of all potencies;
caitany�ya-to Lord Caitanya; nama�-obesiances; nama�-obeisances.

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord �r� K���a, the all-pervading
Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is understood by the study of Ved�nta
philosophy. He is the master of all transcendental potencies, and He appears as �r�
Caitanya Mah�prabhu.

ved�nta-vedya� puru�a� pur��a�


caitany�tm�na� vi�va-yo�i� mah�ntam
tam eva viditv�t� m�tyum eti
n�nya� panth� vidyate 'yan�ya

ved�nta-vedyam-known by Vedanta; puru�am-the person; pur��am-ancient;


caitany�tm�nam-Lord Caitanya; vi�va-yo�im-the origin of the universe; mah�ntam-
great; tam-Him; eva-indeed; viditv�--knowing; ati-beyond; m�tyum-death; eti-goes;
na-not; anya�-another; panth�-path; vidyate-is; ayan�ya-for liberation.

"One who understands that �r� Caitanya Mah�prabhu is the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, who is known by the study of Ved�nta philosophy, who is the original
cause of the universe, and who is the oldest, the original person, crosses beyond
this world of birth and death. This is the proper understanding of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, and aside from this there is no other way to achieve
liberation.

sva-n�ma-m�la-mantre�a sarva� hl�dayat� vibhu�

sva-n�ma-m�la-mantre�a-with the mantra of His name; sarvam-all; hl�dayat�-


delights; vibhu�-the Lord.

"Appearing in this golden form, the all-powerful Supreme Lord will fill the
entire universe with transcendental bliss by the chanting of His own holy names.

sa eva m�la-mantra� japat� harir it� k���a it� r�ma iti.

sa�-He; eva-indeed; m�la-mantram-the mantra; japati-chants; hari�-Hari; it�-


thus; k���a-K���a; it�-thus; r�ma-R�ma; iti.-thus.

"The Supreme Lord will chant a mantra consisting of the names Hari, K���a, and
R�ma (the maha�-mantra: hare k���a hare k���a k���a k���a hare hare, hare r�ma hare
r�ma r�ma r�ma hare hare).

atharva-veda-puru�a-bodiny-upani�ad�

saptame gaura-var�a-vi��or ity anena sva-�akty� caikyam etya pr�nte pr�tar


avat�rya saha svai� sva-manu� �ik�ayati.

Upani�ad; saptame-in the seventh; gaura-var�a-a fair color; vi��o�-of Lord Vi�.nu;
anena-with this; sva-�aktya-His owjn potency; ca-and; aikyam-oneness; etya-
attaining; pr�nte-at the end; pr�ta�-in the beginning; avat�rya-descending; saha-
with; svai�-His own; sva-manum-His own mantra; �ik�ayati-teaches.

In the Atharva-veda Puru�a-bodin� Upani�ad it is said:

"In the seventh manvantara, in the beginning of the Kal�-yuga, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead will, accompanied by His own associates, descend in a golden
form to the earth. He will teach the chanting of His own holy names."

In the Atharva Veda, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself says:

"When between four-thousand to five-thousand years of the Kal�-yuga have


passed, I will descend to the earth in a place by the Ganges shore. I will be a
tall, fair, and saintly br�hma�a devotee of the Lord. I will have all the signs of
an exalted person. I will be renounced, free of all material desire. I will accept
the order of renunciation (sanny�sa). I will be a devotee advanced in bhakt�-yoga.
I will chant the holy names of the Lord. I will taste the sweet mellows of My own
devotional service. Only the great devotees will understand Me."

��vara-pr�rthita� sa-pariv�ro nir�lambo nirdh�te� kali-kalma�a-kavalita-
jan�valamban�ya.

s�ma-vede-in the Sama Veda; tath�-so; aham-i; k�ta-sanny�sa�-accepted


sanhyasa; bh�-girb��a�-a br�hma�a; avatari�ye-will descend; t�re-on the shore;
alakanand�y��-ofg the Ganges; puna� puna�-again and again; ��vara-pr�rthita�-
chanting the names of the Lord; sa-pariv�ra�-with My associates; nir�lambo

In the S�ma Veda, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself says:

"To deliver the people devoured by the sins of Kal�-yuga, I will, accompanied
by My associates, descend to the earth in a place by the Ganges shore. I will be a
br�hma�a avadh�ta-sanny�s�. Again and again I will chant the holy names of the
Lord."

In the K���a Upani�ad it is said:

"In the Kal�-yuga, Lord K���a will appear in a br�hma�a's family. He will
teach the message of the Upani�ads and the dharma-��stras. He will defeat the
atheists and offenders and He will establish the truth of Vai��ava-dharma."

atra brahma-pura� n�ma


pu��ar�ka� yad ucyate
tad ev���a-dala� padma-
sannibha� puram adbhutam

ch�ndogyopani�adi-in the Candogya Upanisad; atra-there; brahma-puram-a


spiritual city; n�ma-indeed; pu��ar�kam-Pundarika; yat-what; ucyate-is said; tat-
that; ev���a-dalam-with eight petals; padma-lotus; sannibham-near; puram-city;
adbhutam-wonderful.

In the Ch�ndogya Upani�ad it is said:

"In that place is a wonderful city like an eight-petal lotus flower.

tan-madhye dahara� s�k��t


m�y�puram it�ryate
tatra ve�ma bhagavata�
caitanyasya par�tmana�
tasmin yas t� antar�k��o
hy antar-dv�pa� sa ucyate

tan-madhye-in the middle; daharam-the heart; s�k��t-directly; m�y�puram-


Mayapura; iti-thus; �ryate-is called; tatra-there; ve�ma-the abode; bhagavata�-of
the Supreme Personality of Godhead; caitanyasya-Lord caitanya; par�tmana�-the
Supreme Lord; tasmin-there; ya�-who; tv-indeed; anta�-within; �k��a�-manifested;
hi-indeed; antar-dv�pa�-Antardvipa; sa-that; ucyate-is said.

"In the middle of that lotus-city is a place called M�y�pura, and in the
middle of M�y�pura is a placed called Antardv�pa. That place is the home of Lord
Caitanya, the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

sad� pa�ya� pa�yate rukma-var�a�


kart�ram ��a� puru�a� brahma-yo�im
sad� vidv�n pu�ya-p�pe vidh�ya
nira�jana� parama� s�myam upaiti

mu��akopani�adi-in the Mundaka Upnaisad; sad�-always; pa�ya�-to be seen;


pa�yate-is seen; rukma-var�am-golden; kart�ram-the doier; ��am-the controller;
puru�am-the person; brahma-yo�im-the source of Brahman; sad�-always; vidv�n-wise;
pu�ya-p�pe-in piety and sin; vidh�ya-shaking off; nira�jana�-untouched; paramam-
supreme; s�myam-liberation; upaiti-attains.

In the Mu��aka Upani�ad it is said:

"One who sees that golden-colored Personality of Godhead, the Supreme Lord,
the supreme actor, who is the source of the Supreme Brahman, is liberated."*

sattvasyai�a prav�rtaka�
su-nirmal�m im�� pr�ptim

�vet��vataropani�adi-in the Svtreasvatara Upanisad; mah�n prabhu�-Mah�prabhu;


vai-indeed; puru�a�-the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sattvasya-of transcendental
enlightenment; e�a-indeed; prav�rtaka�-the teacher; su-nirmal�m-purity; im�m-this;
pr�ptim-attainment; ���na�-the master; jyoti�-splendor; avyaya�-eternal.

In the �vet��vatara Upani�ad it is said:

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead is Mah�prabhu, who disseminates


transcendental enlightenment. Just to be in touch with Him is to be in contact with
the indestructible brahmajyoti."*

ek�da�e-in the eleventh canto; k���a-var�am-repeating the syllables K���a;


tvi��-with luster; ak���am-not black (golden); sa-a�ga-along with associates;
up��ga-servants; astra-weapons; p�r�adam-confidential companions; yaj�ai�-by
sacrifice; sa�k�rtana-pr�yai�-consisting chiefly of congregational chanting;
yajanti-they worship; hi-certainly; su-medhasa�-intelligent persons.

In �r�mad-Bh�gavatam (11.5.32) it is said:

"In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to


worship the �ncarnation of Godhead, who constantly sings the name of K���a.
Although His complexion is not blackish, He is K���a Himself. He is accompanied by
His associates, servants, weapons, and confidential companions."*

dhyeyam� sad� paribhav�ghnam abhi��a-doha�


t�rth�spada� �iva-viri�ci-nuta� �ara�yam
bh�ty�rti-ha� pra�ata-p�la bhav�bdhi-pota�

ek�da�a-skandhe-in the eleventh canto; dhyeyam-fit to be meditated upon; sad�-


always; paribhava-the insults of masterial existence; ghnam-which destroy; abhi��a-
the true desire of the soul; doham-which amply reward; t�rtha-of all the holy
places and hreat saintly personalities; aspadam-the abode; �iva-viri�ci-by the
greatest of the demigods, Lord �iva and Brahm�; nutam-which are bowed down to;
�ara�yam-most woprthy of taking shelter of; bh�tya-of Your servants; �rt�-ham-which
relieve the distress; pra�ata-p�la-O protector of all who simply offer respects to
You; bhav�bdhi-of the ocean of birth and death; potam-which are a suitable boat
(for crossing); vande-I offer my homage; mah�-puru�a-O Lord Mah�prabhu; te-to Your;

In �r�mad-Bh�gavatam (11.5.33 and 34) it is said:

"We offer our respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of Him, the Lord, upon
whom we should always meditate. He destroys insults to His devotees. He removes the
distresses of His devotees and satisfies their desires. He, the abode of all holy
places and the shelter of all sages, is worshipable by Lord �iva and Lord Brahm�.
He is the boat of the demigods for crossing the ocean of birth and death.*

tyaktv� su-dustyaja-surepsita-r�jya-lak�m��
dharmi��ha �rya-vacas� yad-ag�darapyam
m�y�-m�ga� dayitepsitam anvadh�vad
vande mah�-puru�a te cara��ravindam

tyaktv�-abandoning; su-dustyaja-most difficult ot give up; sura-�psita-


anxiously desired by the demigods; r�jya-lak�m�m-the goddess of fortune and her
opulence; dharmi��ha-most perfectly fixed in religiousness; �rya-vacas�-according
to the words of a br�hma�a (who had cursed Him to be deprived of all the happiness
of family life); yat-He who; ag�t-went; ara�yam-to the forest (taking to the
renounced order of life); m�y�-m�gam-the conditioned soul who is always searching
out illusory enjoyment; dayitay�-out of sheer mercy; �psitam-His desired object;
anvadh�vat-running after; vande-I offer my homage; mah�-puru�a-O Lord Mah�prabhu;
te-to Your; cara��ravindam-lotus feet.

"We offer our respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of the Lord, upon whom
one should always meditate. He left His householder life, leaving aside His eternal
consort, whom even the denizens of heaven adore. He went into the forest to deliver
the fallen souls, who are put into illusion by material energy."*

ittha� n�-tiryag-��i-deva-jha��vat�rair
lok�n vibh�vayas� ha�s� jagat-prat�p�n
dharma� mah�-puru�a p�s� yug�nuv�tta�
channa� kalau yad abhavas tri-yugo 'tha sa tvam

ittham-in this way; n�-like a human being (such as Lord K���a and Lord
R�macandra); tiryak-like animals (such as the boar); ��i-as a great saint
(Para�ur�ma); deva-as demigods; jha�a-as an aquatic (such as the fish and
tortoise); �vat�rai�-by such different incarnations; lok�n-all the different
planetary systems; vibh�vayasi-You protect; ha�si-You sometimes kill; jagat-
prat�p�n-persons who have simply created trouble in this world; dharmam-the
principles of religion; mah�-puru�a-O great personality; p�si�You protect;
yug�nuv�ttam-according to the different milleniums; channa�-covered; kalau-in the
age of kali; yat-since; abhava�-have been (and will be in the future); tr�-yuga�-
named Triyuga; atha-therefore; sa-the same personality; tvam-You.

In �r�mad-Bh�gavatam (7.9.38) it �s said:

"My Lord, You kill all the enemies of the world in Your multifarious
incarnations in the families of men, animals, demigods, ��is, aquatics, and so on.
Thus You illuminate the worlds with transcendental knowledge. In the age of Kali, O
Mah�puru�a, You sometimes appear in a covered incarnation. Therefore You are known
as Triyuga (one who appears in only three yugas)."*

aham eva dvija-�re��ho


nitya� pracchanna-vigraha�
bhagavad-bhakta-r�pe�a
loka� rak��mi sarvad�

�d�-pur��e n�rada-pur��e ca-in the Ad� Pur��a and N�rada Pur��a it is said;
aham-I; eva-indeed; dvija-�re��ha�-the best of br�hma�as; nityam-always;
pracchanna-vigraha�-true nature concealed; bhagavat-of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead; bhakta-of a devotee; r�pe�a-in the form; lokam-the eorld; rak��mi-protect;
sarvad�-in all respects.

In the Ad� Pur��a and N�rada Pur��a, the Supreme Personality of Godhead
Himself declares:

"My true identity always concealed, I will assume the form of a br�hma�a
devotee of the Lord. In this form I will deliver the worlds."

k�rma-pur��e-in the K�rma Pur��a; kalin�-by kali0yuga; dahyam�n�n�m�burned;


uddhar�ya-to deliver; tanu-bh�t�m-the souls in material bodies; janma-birth;
prathama-sandhy�y�m-in the first sandhy�; bhavi�yati-will be; dvij�laye-in a
br�hma�a's home.

In the K�rma Pur��a it is said:

"To deliver the conditioned souls burning in the troubles of Kal�-yuga, in the
first sandhya� of that age the Supreme Personality of Godhead will take birth in a
br�hma�a's home."

garu�a-pur��e-in the Garu�a Pur��a; kalina-by kal�-yuga; dahyam�n�n�m-burning;


paritr���ya-to deliver; tanu-bh�t�m-the conditioned souls; janma-birth; prathama-
sandhy�y�m-in the first sandhya; kari�y�mi-I will will do; dvij�ti�u-among the
br�hma�as.

In the Garu�a Pur��a, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself declares:

"To deliver the conditioned souls burning in the troubles of Kal�-yuga, in the
first sandhya� of that age I will take birth among the br�hma�as."

specifically; m�y�pure-in mayapura; navadv�pe-in Navadvipa; bhavi�y�mi-I will be;
�ac�-suta�-the son of �ac�.

In the Garu�a Pur��a, the Supreme Personality of Godhead again declares:

"In my original spiritual form, perfect and complete, I will become the son of
�ac�-dev� in Navadv�pa-M�y�pura at the beginning of Kal�-yuga."

again to the earth. Of this there is no doubt. His arm decorated with a bamboo
da��a, He will be a sanny�s� and His name will be Caitanya."

Treta�-yuga appeared as a person named R�ma, a person who defeated the ten-headed
demon R�va�a, and who in the Dv�para-yuga removed the earth's burden and protected
the gopa people of Vraja-pura, will appear again in the Kal�-yuga. His form will be
golden, He will delight in chanting the Lord's holy names, and His name will be
Caitanya."

"They who are bewildered by My illusory potency will not understand the great
secret of the appearance in this world of Me in My personal form, in My form as the
incarnation of a devotee, in My form bearing the name of a devotee, in My form as a
devotee, and in My form as the giver of devotional service. This secret is not to
be revealed to them. Only the saintly, pure, renounced devotees, diligently engaged
in My devotional service, will be able to understand Me in these five forms.

Note: This verse, reminiscent of Caitanya-carit�m�ta Ad� 1.14, describes the


pa�ca-tattva.

degraded. He will burn in a terrible hell until the time when the universe is
flooded with water.

In the Brahma-rahasya it is said:

"The holy name K���a Caitanya is the most important of the Lord's holy names.
By chanting this name a single time, a person attains the results of chanting all

equipoised and peaceful. He is the highest abode of peace and devotion, for He

"The br�hma�as are degraded and addicted to pleasing their bellies and
genitals. Brahminical status is determined only possession of a sacred thread. The

"The people are gluttonous, short in stature, lazy, foolish, greedy after

"Everyone follows the wrong path. They abandon their prescribed duties, commit

"Walking either on the path of arrows or the path of the Vedas, I deliver the

"One should chant this mantra once, twice, thrice, as many times as one is
able, or again and again for as long as one lives. By chanting this mantra even a
person who was a dogeater may become My devotee. Of this there is no doubt.

sarva-all; veda-the Vedas; vida�-knowing; vipr��-br�hma�as; pur���gama-


p�rag��-gone to the farther shore of the Pur��as and Agamas; na-not; cet-if; mad-
bhakta-bhakt��-devotees of My devotees; te-they; d�re-far away; ti��hanti-stand;
v�rit��-excluded.

"Even if they are learned in all the Vedas and even if they have traveled to
the farther shore of the Agamas and Pur��as, they who are not devotees of My
devotees cannot approach Me. They must stay far away from Me.

api-even; cet-if; su-dur�c�ra�-misbehaved; pukka�a�-pulkasa; �vapaca�-


dogeater; athav�-or; mad-bhakta-to My devotee; bhakt�-k�t-rendering devotional
service; sa-he; sy�t-may be; mama-of Me; kaustubha-the Kaustubha jewel; sannibha�-
nearness.
"Even a barbarian, a dogeater, or a person who has performed the most
abominable action may come very close to Me, almost touching My Kaustubha jewel, if
he has devotedly served My devotee.

bhakt�j��-parip�laka�
mat-par�n uddhari�y�mi
ghora-sa�s�ra-s�gar�t

bhakta-r�pam-the form of a devotee; aham-I; dh�tv�-manifesting; bhakta-of My


devotee; �j��-the order; parip�laka�-protecting; mat-par�n-they who are devoted to
Me; uddhari�y�mi-I will deliver; ghora-sa�s�ra-s�gar�t-from the horrible ocean of
repeated birth and death.

"Fulfilling My devotees request, I will accept the form of a devotee and I


will deliver My devotees from the terrible ocean of repeated birth and death.

"They who are bewildered by My illusory potency will not understand the great
secret of the appearance in this world of Me in My personal form, in My form as the
incarnation of a devotee, in My form bearing the name of a devotee, in My form as a
devotee, and in My form as the giver of devotional service. This secret is not to
be revealed to them. Only the saintly, pure, renounced devotees, diligently engaged
in My devotional service, will be able to understand Me in these five forms.

Note: This verse, reminiscent of Caitanya-carit�m�ta Ad� 1.14, describes the


pa�ca-tattva.

"My dear male and female associates, headed by �r�d�ma� and Subala, who came
to this world at the time of My advent as Lord K���a, will come again during the
Kal�-yuga.

"In this way I will again reveal the path of devotional service, which had
