Eternal Pastimes

vana iha bh�t� kim apy ad��ya-dh�ma
vraja-jana-sahita� sa yatra k���a�
sukha-vih�tim� vidadhad vibh�t� nityam

praka�atara-vik��a-bh�ji-manifested; v�nd�-vane-in V�nd�vana; iha-here; bh�ti-


manifestes; kim api-something; ad��ya-dh�ma-invisible abode; vraja-jana-sahita�-
with the people of Vraja; sa-He; yatra-where; k���a�-K���a; sukha-vih�tim-
happiness; vidadhat-placing; vibh�ti-shines; nityam-eternally.

Within the realm of V�nd�vana manifested on the earth, an unmanifested realm


of V�nd�vana, invisible to ordinary eyes, exists. In that invisible realm Lord
K���a eternally enjoys blissful pastimes with the people of Vraja.

vraja-yuva-r�ja-sam�ja-loka e�a�

gir�-sarid-a�cita-c�rut�t�-dhany�

parilasati-shines; paya�-samudra-s�m�-the greatest milk ocean; vraja-yuva-the


yoith of Vraja; r�ja-king; sam�ja-assembly; loka-people; e�a�-thisd; amum-to Him;
anu-following; caturasram-square; atra-here; vany�-forest; giri-hill; sarit-
streams; a�cita-with; c�rut�-beauty; at�-dhany�-very glorious.

That realm is very splendid, beautiful and glorious with forests, hills,
streams, the friends of Vraja's prince, and a great ocean of milk.

giri-of hills; samuditi�-manifestation; atra-here; su��hu-great; govardhana-


Govardhana; valit�-manifested; paribh�ti-shines; citra-wonder; tuly�-equal;
vilasati-shines; yamun�dik�-beginning with the Yamun�; nad�n�m-of rivers; tati�-
multitude; api-also; m�nasa-ga�gay�-with the M�nasa-ga�g�; anu�akt�-attached.

That realm is splendid with wonderful mountains around Govardhana, with many
streams around the Yamun�, and with many lakes around the M�nasa-ga�g�.

abhiruc�-dada-ratna-citra-mitra�
bhuvanam idam� paribh�t� yatra v�k���
tad-anuk�t�-par� ruc� sam�ddhy�
har�-rat�-d�yitay� ca ye vibh�ta�

abhiruci-happiness; dada-giving; ratna-jewel; citra-wonder; mitram-sun;


bhuvanam-world; idam-this; paribh�ti-shines; yatra-where; v�k�a�-tree; tad-anuk�t�-
par�-imitation; ruc�-with splendor; sam�ddhy�-opulent; hari-to Lord K���a; rati-
pleasure; d�yitay�-giving; ca-and; ye-who; vibh�t��-splendid.

That realm is splendid like a cint�ma��-jewel sun. The splendid and opulent
trees there bring great pleasure to Lord K���a.

vilasat� caturasra-dh�mn� ghasra-


k�it�-pat�-bimba-maha�-sahasra-patram
upavanam adh� patram atra k���a-
priyatama-d�ra-vih�ra-s�ra-vara�

vilasati-shines; caturasra-dh�mni-in the courtyard; ghasra-k�it�-pat�-bimba-of


the sun; maha�-splendor; sahasra-a thousand; patram-petals; upavanam-garden; adh�
patram-to a petal; atra-there; k���a-of K���a; priyatama-d�ra-with His ebloved
gop�s; vih�ra-s�ra-vara�-enjoying pastimes.

In the courtyard of the realm is a thousand-petal lotus shining like the sun.
In each of its petals is a garden where Lord K���a enjoys with His gop�-beloveds.

sthit�-path�-v�ndam at�-sphu�am� vibh�ti
apara-para-gat�vac�k�u���i
�rut�-vihit�ny ayan�n� yat tu jet�

iha-here; kamala-lotus; dala-petals; dvaya-two; ali-host; madhya-middle;


sthiti-situation; pathi-on the path; v�ndam-host; at�-sphu�am-very clearly;
vibh�ti-is manifested; apara-para-gata-between one and another avac�k�u���i-beyond
the eyes; �rut�-vihit�ni-placed on the ears; ayan�ni-paths; yat-which; tu-indeed;
jet�-victorious.
Between the petals of this lotus are many splendid paths, paths invisible to
the material senses, paths known only by the Vedas.

ma�ijan�-kamalasya tasya c�gr�-


val�-valaya-pratisandh�-labdha-sandhi
surabh�-ga�a-v�t� sudh�bha-dugdh�
surabh�-tati� �rayate �ubhamyu go��ham

ma�ijan�-kamalasya-a jewel lotus; tasya-of that; ca-and; agra-before; �vali-


multitudes; valaya-circles; pratisandhi-contact; labdha-attained; sandhi-contact;
surabh�-ga�a-v�t�-filled with beauty and virtue; sudh�bha-dugdh�-with nectar milk;
surabh�-tati�-surabh� cows; �rayate-rests; �ubhamyu-auspicious; go��ham-in a cow
place.

In that jewel lotus is a place of many beautiful and virtuous surabh� cows
filled with nectar milk.

atha dala-valayasya madhya-bh�ga�


pratilasat� vraja-r�ja-r�jadh�n�
paridhivad abhita� samasta-gopa-
prakara-g�h�valir atra yatra bh�ti

atha-then; dala-valayasya-of the circle of petals; madhya-bh�gam-in the


middle; pratilasati-shines; vraja-r�ja-of the king of Vraja; r�jadh�n�-the capitol;
paridhivat-like a circle; abhita�-around; samasta-gopa-of all the gopas; prakara-
g�h�vali�-palaces; atra-here; yatra-where; bh�ti-is manifested.

In the middle of the circle of petals is the splendid palace of Vraja's king.
In a circle around it are the splendid palaces of all the gopas.

ruc�-lasad-avabodha-madhya-bh�ga�
sa-pari�ad-antima-�a��ha-bh�ga-pu��am
vraja-n�pa-bhavanam� tu tatra c�ntar
dinakara-vad vidadh�t� ra�m�-s���im

ruci-splendor; lasat-shining; avabodha-palace; madhya-bh�gam-middle; sa-


pari�at-with assembly halls; antima-final; �a��ha-sixth; bh�ga-part; pu��am-
completed; vraja-n�pa-bhavanam-the home of Vraja's king; tu-indeed; tatra-there;
ca-and; anta�-within; dinakara-vat-like the sun; vidadh�ti-places; ra�m�-s���im-the
creation of light.

In the middle of that glorious place is the King of Vraja's palace, filled
with royal opulences and royal assemblies, and splendid like the sun.

yad ap� ma�imayam� tad-eka-r�pa�


tad ap� sad-adbhuta-madhya-madhya-bh�gam
yad� bahu-vidham �hitum� sam�h�
smara mama m�nasa gopa-camp�-yugmam

yat-what; api-also; ma�imayam-made of jewels; tad-eka-r�pam-the most


beautiful; tat-that; api-also; sad-adbhuta-wonderful; madhya-middle; madhya-middle;
bh�gam-part; yadi-if; bahu-vidham-in many ways; �hitum-to know; sam�h�-desire;
smara-remember; mama-my; m�nasa-heart; gopa-camp�-yugmam-the two Gop�la-camp�s.

Although that palace is the most beautiful, its inner inner part is even more
wonderfully beautiful. O heart, if you wish to know all about that place, then
please remember my Gop�la-camp�.

father's assembly; priy�val�n�m-of His dear associates; mahasi-in the festival; ca-

Surrounded by the stars and cakora birds of His friends, gently smiling, the
moonlight of His glories shining, happy with the words of the poet devotees, never
tiring of giving a great festival of happiness to the lotus flowers of His
devotees, surrounded by His father and elders, and enjoying great festivals with
the dear gop�s, in that place the moon of Gopa K���a enjoys blissful pastimes.

sura-pat�-ma��-manit��ga-sa�gha-
pa�a-pa�ut�-k�ta-hema-ra�ga-bha�ga�
gu�a-ga�a-bh�ta-bh�rat�-sam�ja�
sa jayat� gokula-r�ja-va��a-r�ja�
sura-pat�-ma�i-with sapphires; m�nita-worshiped; a�ga-sa�gha-limbs; pa�a-
graments; pa�ut�-expertness; k�ta-done; hema-ra�ga-golden arena; bha�ga�-breaking;
gu�a-ga�a-virtues; bh�ta-manifesting; bh�rat�-of eloquence; sam�ja�-assembly; sa-
He; jayati-is glorious; gokula-r�ja-va��a-r�ja�-the king of Gokula.

His limbs worshiped by sapphires, His garments eclipsing the land of gold, and
His Self the home of eloquence and a host of virtues, the ruler of Vraja shines
with great splendor.

���u kathay�m� sad�p� n�t�-bhinna�
yad an�tam ap� p�rva-r�t�-ceta�
pravi�at� n�dyatanam� tath� yath�rtham

iha-here; har�-vih�ti�-Lord K���a's pastimes; at�ta-r�ty�-beyond; ���u-please


hear; kathay�mi-I will tell; sad�-always; api-also; na-not; at�-bhinna�-different;
yat-what; an�tam-untruth; api-also; p�rva-r�t�-ceta�-previous descriptions;
pravi�ati-enters; na-not; adyatanam-now; tath�-so; yath�rtham-appropriate.

In this place Lord K���a enjoys pastimes. Please listen, and I will tell them
to you in detail. They are not different from His manifest pastimes. I will not say
anything that is not true. Now it is not right to say anything like that.

iha ca yad uditam� hares� caritra�


tad akhilam eva dig eva tasya gamy�
prat�-lavam ap� citram asya tat tat
ka iva sudh�r avas�nam �dad�ta

iha-here; ca-and; yat-what; uditam-said; hare�-of Lord K���a; caritram-the


pastimes; tat-that; akhilam-all; eva-indeed; dig-the direction; eva-indeed; tasya-
of that; gamy�-to be attained; prat�-lavam-a small part; api-even; citram-wonder;
asya-of Him; tat-that; tat-that; ka-who?; iva-indeed; sudh��-intelligent; avas�nam-
satiation; �dad�ta-accepts.

I will only point the direction to all that has been said of Lord K���a's
pastimes. Even the smallest part of His pastimes is a great wonder. What wise man
will ever tire of hearing Lord K���a's pastimes?

atha ni�� rahas� gat�ntar�y��


balajam ite stava-v�dya-vidy�-loke
vraja-bhavana-jana� sahaiva j�gran
manas� harim� dadhad �gatam� nananda
atha-now; ni�i-at night; rahas�-in secret; gata-gone; antar�y�m-in the heart;
balajam-to the gate; ite-vome; stava-v�dya-vidy�-loke-in the poets learned in
offering prayers; vraja-bhavana-jana�-the people of Vraja; saha-with; eva-indeed;
j�gran-waking; manasi-in the heart; harim-Lord K���a; dadhat-placing; �gatam-come;
nananda-rejoiced.

When the night had ended and the poets expert at composing prayers stood at
the door, the people of Vraja awakened and became very happy at heart when Lord
K���a appeared before them.

sa-mathana-ninadam� sa-g�ta-n�da�
sa-surabh�-doha-ravam� sa-gopa-v�dam
am�ta-mathana-yuk-payodh�-tulya�
vraja-kulam ullasitam� didhinva k���am

sa-mathana-of churning; ninadam-the sound; sa-g�ta-n�dam-the sound of singing;


sa-surabh�-doha-ravam-the sound of milking trhe cows; sa-gopa-v�dam-with the sound
of the gopas; am�ta-mathana-yuk-payodh�-tulyam-like the chruning of an ocean of
nectar; vraja-kulam-the people of Vraja; ullasitam-happy; didhinva-pleased; k���am-
Lord K���a.

The sounds in Vraja of the cowherd people talking and singing, the the cows
being milked, and the butter being churned, sounds like the churning of a nectar
ocean, filled Lord K���a with happiness.

vraja-pat�-mithunam� tad�tha putra-


pramada-mada-�lathita-prad�na-set�
tanaya-jaya-virut-tatim� pa�hadbhya�
pracurataram� vitat�ra v�ra-v�ram

vraja-pat�-mithunam-the king and queen of Vraja; tad�-then; atha-then; putra-


son; pramada-mada-with intense love; �lathita-slackened; prad�na-of charity; set�-
limits; tanaya-to the son; jaya-glory; virut-calling out; tatim-series;
pa�hadbhya�-reciting; pracurataram-greatest; vitat�ra-manifested; v�ra-v�ram-again
and again.

Overcome with love for their son, the king and queen of Vraja again and again
gave limitless charity to the poets reciting virut poems praising Him.

iha lasat� harer vil�sa-geha-


pratatir ud�ra-sud�ra-s�ra-dh�r�
�ayana-sukhamay� niku�ja-v�thi�
kva ca na ca t�d��at�m� gat� vibh�ti
iha-here; lasati-shines; hare�-of Lord K���a; vil�sa-geha-home of pastimes;
pratati�-multitude; ud�ra-exalted; sud�ra-beautiful wives; s�ra-best; dh�r�-flood;
�ayana-sukhamay�-in the happiness of sleep; niku�ja-v�thi�-the forest path; kva-
where?; ca-and; na-not; ca-and; t�d��at�m-the state of being like that; gat�-
attained; vibh�ti-is manifested.

In that place are many pastime cottages and many beautiful and exalted gop�s
dear to Lord K���a. On what forest path are there not gop�s, cottages, and pastime
couches?

nija-nija-�ayanam� gatam� tam �li�g-


ana-valitam� vidadhur vidhu-sutanva�
rajan�-virama�am� yath� yath�s�d
agha�ata dor-dra�him� tath� tath�s�m

nija-nija-�ayanam-to their own beds; gatam-gon; tam-Him; �li�gana-valitam-


embraced; vidadhu�-did; vidhu�-K���a; su-tanva�-the slender girls; rajan�-
virama�am-the end of the night; yath�-as; yath�-as; �s�t-was; agha�ata-was; do�-of
the arms; dra�him�-firmness; tath�-so; tath�-so; �s�m-of them.

Lord K���a went to each gop�'s bed. The beautiful slender gop�s embraced Him.
For the whole night He tightly held the gop�s in His arms.

iha parama-ram� vibh�t� r�dh�


sad-u�u-ga�e gagane yathendu-m�rti�
tad iyam adhikay� gir� sabh�jy�
tad anugatim� dadhatam� par�� sapatnya�

iha-there; parama-ram�-the supreme goddess of fortune; vibh�ti-shines; r�dh�-


R�dh�; sad-u�u-ga�e-filled with stars; gagane-in the sky; yath�-as; indu-of the
moon; m�rti�-the form; tat-that; iyam-that; adhikay�-more; gir�-with words;
sabh�jy�-to be praised; tat-that; anugatim-following; dadhatam-placed; par��-great;
sapatnya�-the co-wives.

�r� R�dh�, the supreme goddess of fortune shines like a moon surrounded by
stars. The gop�s follow Her and praise Her virtues.

vraja-suk�ta-vil�sa-s�ra-ratn�-
kara-v��abh�nu-suj�ta-��ta-lak�m��
agharipu-rama��-ram�su mukhy�
svayam anur�ga-vih�ra-har�-m�rti�

vraja-of Vraja; suk�ta-vil�sa-s�ra-transcendental pastimes; ratna-jewels;


�kara-reservoir; v��abh�nu-from King V��abh�nu; suj�ta-born; ��ta-beautiful;
lak�m��-goddess; agharipu-rama��-ram�su-of Lord K���a's beautiful girls; mukhy�-the
most important; svayam-personally; anur�ga-love; vih�ra-pastimes; hari-charming;
m�rti�-the form.

She is a beautiful goddess born from King V��abh�nu, who is a jewel ocean of
the pastimes of saintly deeds in Vraja. She is the first of Lord K���a's beautiful
beloveds. She is charming and playful in the pastimes of love.

dayita-ghana-ta�id-vil�s�-var��
priyatama-var�a-savar�a-svasta-vastr�
harima��-taral�d�-divya-divyan-
ma�imaya-bh��a�a-bh��a���ga-bha�gi�

dayita-the bloved; ghana-cloud; ta�it-lightning flash; vil�si-splendid; var��-


color; priyatama-of the beloved; var�a-color; savar�a-gold; svasta-manifested;
vastr�-garments; harima�i-sapphire; taral�-locket; �di-beginning; divya-splendid;
divyat-glistening; ma�imaya-made of jewels; bh��a�a-ornaments; bh��a�a-ornament;
a�ga-of limbs; bha�gi�-the grace.

She is like a glittering lightning flash by the monsoon cloud of Her beloved.
She wears beautiful garments colored like Her beloved. The beautiful grace of Her
limbs decorates Her sapphire locket and glistening ornaments.

upamit�-padav�m� svam eva y�nti


su-parimita-vyati�obhit��ga-sa�gh�
prat�-kakubha-�ubha�kara-prath�li�
sahaja-vilak�a�a-lak�a���kita-�r��

upamit�-padav�m-comparison; svam-own; eva-indeed; y�nti-attains; su-parimita-


beautiful; vyati�obhita-glorious; a�ga-sa�gh�-limbs; prat�-kakubha-in all
directions; �ubha�kara-prath�li�-giving auspiciousness; sahaja-natural; vilak�a�a-
extraordinary; lak�a�a-characteristics; a�kita-marked; �r��-beauty.

She can be compared only to Herself. Her limbs are very beautiful. Her glories
have made all directions auspicious. She is glorious with the most auspicious
marks.

nija-nakha-k�ntibhir ujjvalena tena
avayava-kulam anyad anyad astu
pratinava-rocir up�tta-k�nt�-cittam

�a�i-moon; kamala-lotus; rucam-glory; pad�-with a foot; api-even; jetr�-


defeating; nija-nakha-k�ntibhi�-with the splendor of nails; ujjvalena-glorious;
tena-by that; avayava-kulam-limbs; anyat-another; anyat-another; astu-may be;
pratinava-roci�-new splendor; up�tta-k�nti-beauty; cittam-the heart.

The splendor of Her toenails defeats the beauty of the moon and the lotus. The
beauty of each of Her limbs enchants the heart of �r� K���a.

su-kusuma-sukum�rat�vat�ras
tr�-jagat� saurabha-saurabh�kara-�r��
�ta-mita-madhura-priy�rtha-r�t�-
pravalita-var�ana-r�t�-labdha-var��

su-kusuma-beautiful flowers; sukum�rat�-softness and delicacy; avat�ra�-


descent; tr�-jagati-the three worlds; saurabha-of all fragrant things; saurabha-the
fragrance; �kara-host; �r��-beauty; �ta-true; mita-slight; madhura-sweet; priya-
beloved; artha-for the sake; r�ti-movement; pravalita-done; var�a�a-description;
r�ti-way; labdha-attained; var��-color.

She is the softness and delicateness of flowers descended to the three worlds.
She is the fragrance of fragrances. She speaks sweet and graceful words to please
Her beloved.

sumat�-mat�-guru� samasta-vidy�
sakala-kal�-valit�p� namra-citt�
hriyam anu vinayam� nayam� samaj���
ap� dadh�t� svajan�d�-�arma-d�tr�

sumat�-mat�-guru�-the most intelligent of the intelligent; samasta-vidy�-all


knowledge; sakala-kal�-valit�-skilled in all arts; api-also; namra-humble; citt�-
heart; hriyam-shyness; anu-following; vinayam-gentleness; nayam-righteousness;
samaj��m-fame; api-also; dadh�ti-places; svajana-own devotees; �di-beginning with;
�arma-auspiciousness; d�tr�-giving.

She is the most intelligent of the intelligent, learned in all knowledge,


artistic in all arts, humble at heart, and the giver of shyness, humbleness,
righteousness, fame, happiness, and auspiciousness to Her devotees.

nikhilaga-karu��dikair gu�ais ta�


sva-dayitam eva tulam� sad�p� dhartr�
guru-nikara-day�spad�t�-bhakti�
sthira-cara-h�rda-sukh�m�t�bhi�ikt�

nikhilaga-going to all; karu��-mercy; �dikai�-begining with; gu�ai�-with


virtues; tam-to Him; sva-dayitam-Her beloved; eva-indeed; tul�m-equality; sad�-
always; api-also; dhartr�-manifesting; guru-nikara-great; day�-mercy; aspada-abode;
at�-bhakti�-great devotion; sthira-cara-to the moving and unmoving beings; h�rda-
friendship; sukha-happiness; am�ta-nectar; abhi�ikt�-anointed.

Her virtues, beginning with kindness to all living beings, are equalled only
by those of Lord K���a Himself. She is affectionate and devoted to Her superiors.
She is the well-wisher of all living beings, moving and inert. She is sprinkled
with the nectar of happiness.

priya-pada-nakha-k�nt�-le�a-nirma{.sy 241�-
chana-para-citta-da��-va��nuvelam
bhramaram ap� tad�ya-d�ta-buddhy�
pra�ayaja-citra-gir� vicitrayanti

priya-dear; pada-nakha-toenails; k�nti-splendor; le�a-fragment; nirma�chana-


arati; para-devoted; citta-heart; da��-condition; va�a-control; anuvelam-the limit;
bhramaram-bee; api-also; tad�ya-d�ta-buddhy�-with the idea of a messenger;
pra�ayaja-affectionate; citra-wonderful; gir�-words; vicitrayanti-fills with
wonder.

In Her heart She again and again offers �rat� to a single ray of light from
Her beloved's toenail. Thinking a bumblebee to be His messenger, She speaks very
wonderful words of love for Him.

kvacid anukulatay� nij�bhis�re
nava-vidham ap� tatra bhakta-bh�va�
vinidadh�t� priya-bhakta-citta-sakt�

marut-breeze; api-even; calati-moves; sva-bh�vata�-by Her own nature; cet-if;


kvacit-somewhere; anukulatay�-with love; nij�bhis�re-in the meeting; nava-vidham-
nine kinds; api-also; tatra-there; bhakta-bh�vam-love of the devotee; vinidadh�ti-
places; priya-bhakta-citta-sakt�-heart attached to the dear one.

If the breeze moves as She approaches the rendezvous, She thinks Her lover
must be coming. She enters the heart of a devotee that lovingly engages in nine
kinds of devotional service.

Sometimes She knits Her eyebrows and sometimes She speaks sweet and humble
words. In this way She brings her beloved K���a completely under Her control. How
can I glorify Her properly? I do not have the power to glorify Her properly.

Now please hear the pastimes of mercy R�dha� enjoyed on the night of the r�sa
dance. Lord K���a took Her far away. With great happiness She did not know where He

How can I describe her peerless virtues? How can I describe the girl who is a
flood of waves in an ocean of amorous pastimes with Lord K���a? O heart, please
hear a sweet pastime She enjoyed with Her beloved at sunrise.

When She understood that only very little of the night remained, R�dha�
tightly bound Her lover with the ropes of Her arms and bathed His body with Her
tears.

Lord K���a very gently wiped away Her tears, but then He bathed His body again
and again with His own tears.

words like a warm winter sun, the two girls broke the coolness of the divine
couple's motionless embrace.

R�dha� became embarrassed. Again She embraced Her lover. Pretending to be


asleep, She lay motionless for a moment. Frightened, She tried to cheat the
wakefulness that had come.

When daytime came, K���a's dear gop�s remembered K���a's mother. In great
haste they went to perform their duties.

When night came She was happy to abandon Her favorite garment. Now that day
has come, She again holds the garment to Her limbs. Ah, time has the power to take
away what is most dear.

With water from a beautiful cup again and again She washed her mouth, hands,
and feet, and then threw the water to the ground, water that purifies the celestial
worlds beginning with Bhuvar and Svar.

No longer openly showing Her love, Lord K���a's beloved now kept that love
hidden in Her heart. Taking the remaining oil, She massaged Lord K���a's limbs. She
was His equal.

After massaging Him, She bathed Him with scented water, and all the directions
became filled with a sweet fragrance.

Although She covered K���a's form with beautiful garments, She made the glory
of His limbs increase. He became like a host of monsoon clouds and a brilliant sun

manifested as Lord K���a's glory. The many jewel ornaments beautiful-eyed R�dha�
placed on Him delighted Her gop� friends.

vraja-n�pa-mithunasya-of the king and queen of Vraja; ca-and; a�ghri-of the

the son; ca-and; prap�ya-drinking; japa-vidh�-vihita-dv�-var�a-mantr�-by chanting
the mantra of two syllables; hari-Lord K���a; janan�m-the mother; avalokitum-to
see; pratasthe-went.

By chanting the two-syllable mantra "K�s�-�a", R�dha� drank the sacred water
of the feet of Lord K���a, King Nanda, and Mother Yasod�. Then She went to see
Ya�od�, Lord K���a's mother.

Then R�dha� went to Lord K���a's mother, Ya�od�. Accompanied by many friends,
and not able to approach her directly, R�dha� went by a crooked path, finally
placing Her forehead at Ya�od�'s feet.

With both hands touching R�dh�'s head, Mother Ya�oda� carefully picked Her up,
smelled Her head, wept, enveloped Her in a great hug, and became very happy.

By Ya�od�'s order, R�dha� with the beautiful heart bowed down before the elder
ladies and then sat down. Her face like the moon, She charmed everyone's cakora-

became agitated like frogs troubled by summer heat when the cool night is over.

something of Lord K���a's pastimes. I have told you something of the glory of Lord
K���a's abode. Now I will give to you the blissful description of that abode's

When K���a's most beloved R�dha� rose from bed to perform Her daily duties,
Lord K���a, rising for the same purpose, was served by His servant-friend.

When Lord K���a removed His night garment, the marks of His secret amorous
pastimes became exposed. They were like a traitor telling His secrets. Seeing them,
His servant friends smiled and laughed.

carefully washed; kamala-van�ni-the forest of lotus flowers; jig�ya-defeating; tac-
that; ca-and; pa�ya-see; vrajam-Vraja; anu-following; kamal�lay�-the abode of lotus
flowers; api-also; yasya-of which; �rayati-takes shelter; raja�-dust; padayo�-of
the feet; yath�-as; atra-here; vand�-praising.

O heart, gaze on Lord K���a's carefully washed face, hands, and feet, which
defeat forests of lotus flowers. Goddess Lak�m�, who is beautiful like a world of
lotus flowers, has come to Vraja, become a poet, and taken shelter of the dust of
His feet.

dh�tam abhita� sa vidagdha-t�n�-digdha�
surabhitam iha r�dhay� tu devy�

Then Lord K���acandra allowed Goddess R�dha� to expertly anoint His limbs with
many kinds of sweetly scented oil.

samajan� p��itat� na tat tu citram
prathamam ap� sa tan-mud�bhijghrann
agamad am�d��at�m� tad eva citram

Whoever accepts the remnants of this oil that massaged Lord K���a attains
intense love for K���a. That is not surprising. Whoever even once happily smells
the fragrance of that oil also attains intense love for K���a. That is surprising.

With scented water Lord K���a then washed His own limbs. O heart, please hear
about the great splendor of Lord K���a's form.

After massaging Lord K���a's body, the servant knew that K���a's form was now
very soft and relaxed. Trembling, the servant removed Lord K���a's wet garments and
dressed Him in two dry garments. He blossomed with happiness.

The expert servant placed two garments splendid like gold on the monsoon-cloud
limbs of Lord K���a. Splendid, decorated with tilaka and graceful ornaments, and
His hair expertly tied, Lord K���a delighted the friends of splendor and mercy in
the three worlds.

Three times a day Lord K���a bowed down to His father in Dv�rak�. That was
proper. It was not proper in Vraja. The father and son relationship in both places
were different.

O K���a, as the king and queen of Vraja daily meditated on You, so we have
given these pictures of You. We have not invented anything.

Lord K���a never deviated from His religious duties. Every morning He would

His ornaments tinkling, K���a went to His mother. Seeing that the gop�s had

When they saw Him, Ya�oda� and the gop�s went to K���a. A cow can approach her

Seeing Rohi�� and the other women of Vraja, women that loved Him as His mother
loved Him, Lord K���a respectfully bowed before them, and they sprinkled Him with
the tears from their eyes.

After worshiping the cows and calves, who all had silver hooves, gold horns,
and many jewel ornaments, Lord K���a gave them in charity to the br�hma�a boys.

whose cheeks are splendid with jewel earrings, who are glorious with jewel
necklaces, whose handsome arms, decorated with jewel bracelets, armlets, and rings,
are flooded with waves of splendor, who wear belts glorious like Lord N�si�hadeva
Himself, who are decorated with hosts of flowers, who are more glorious than gold
and dark monsoon clouds, who are flooded with the splendor of cint�ma��-jewel
anklets, who sit facing each other, who glance at each other with eyes filled with
festivals of happiness, whose forms are splendid like white camphor and dark
clouds, whose backs are broad and graceful, who pleased Their mothers and friends
with many wonderful joking words, whose handsome forms the young girls, pretending
to look at other things, secretly gazed at from their windows, and who, having
completed Their morning duties, now wished to eat breakfast.

�r� R�dha� cooked, Mother Rohi�� carried the finished dishes to Mother Ya�od�,

did not wish to leave the breakfast table for even a moment.

Whatever could be said about K���a could also be said about Balar�ma. Ya�oda�
and Rohi�� are equals. Look! The love they bear for their sons is the same.

Every day as K���a was about to go to the forest, Mother Ya�oda� would make
offerings of a cup of water and a lamp, perform �rati, and perform many auspicious
rituals for His safety.

In His heart eager to depart for the forest, K���a approached His mother and
with folded hands bowed before her. She touched Him with her hand. Nectar flowed
from her eyes and breasts. She said:

Child, why do You say I should stay at home bound up by household duties? Why
should I not go with You to the forest? Ask the others what they think.

Day after day our son goes to the forest and we, His parents, cannot leave
this house. Child, Your parents are neither afraid nor embarrassed to follow You to
the forest.

Hearing Mother Ya�od�'s words, Lord Balar�ma smiled, shed a tear, bowed His
head, and gently said:

O mother, if mother and father become young and fit again, then this would be
a good arrangement. It is right for the young to stay both at home and in the
forest.

O mother, please know that herding the cows is only the pretext we use to go
to the forest. The truth is that we boys go to the forest to play.

O mother, we happily eat the four kinds of food you send to us in the forest.
We go there to eat the forest-fruits sweeter than nectar.

to Vraja; ca-and; ajani-is manifested; ca-and; jagat�m-of the worlds; ad��ya-
invisible; e�a-He; sphuratu-is manifested; katham-how?; bata-indeed; m�ta�-O
mother; atra-here; bh�ti�-fear.

I go to the forest to kill Vraja's enemies. Then I come back to the village of
Vraja. No one in Vraja sees that I kill them. O mother, why should you be afraid?

thus; h�di-in the heart; mama-if Me; dh�ra-da��m-saintliness; a���yate sma-
manifested.

When I am gone the cows eat grass and wait for My return. They are very
saintly and peaceful at heart.

Then the noble ladies of the village, tears in their eyes, said to Mother
Ya�od�, "It is most auspicious that you perform your daily duties. That is the best
thing for you to do."

Then the noble ladies blessed the boy K���a. Mother Ya�oda� hugged Him and
very gently let Him go.

Mother Ya�oda� touched her son, taught Him, yearned after Him, approached Him,
became stunned with love for Him, became happy in His company, and caressed Him in
many ways. She never became tired of associating with her son.

Bound with ropes of love, Mother Ya�oda� and noble women of Vraja followed the
boy K���a as He left the palace.

When K���a departed, Mother Ya�oda� went back into the palace and passed the
day engaged in her household duties. Now I will meditate on the pastimes of �r�
R�dh�.

From the time K���a was by His mother's side to the time He left for the
forest, R�dha� and Her friends gazed at K���a from the filigreed windows. Again and
again they were overcome with love for Him and again and again they tried to hide
the symptoms of their love.

Approaching noble Ya�od�, and becoming busy in cooking heavenly foods for Her
beloved, R�dha� became filled with happiness. Her pastimes throw me into an ocean
of sweet nectar. Ah! How can I swim in that ocean?

R�dha� ate breakfast with Ya�oda� and the gop�s. With both ears R�dha� heard
K���a's pastimes. With smiling eyes R�dha� glanced at Her friends. These pastimes
fill my thoughts.

As He left for the forest the glory of many splendid garments covered Lord
K���a's form. �r� R�dh�'s sidelong glance also covered Lord K���a's form. The
garments and the glance competed for the right to cover Lord K���a.

yearned to leave Her body and fly with K���a to the forest.

When lotus-eyed K���a descended to the courtyard, His smiles showering nectar
in all directions, peerlessly splendid R�dh�, hidden among Her friends, made Her

cloud. Her complexion was like Lord K���a's yellow garments. She burned with love

K���a went to His father's assembly-house, which is praised by the br�hma�as,


which is a great sky filled with light by the suns of Vraja's cowherd people
worshiped by Lord �iva himself, where every direction is filled with auspicious
sounds of sweet-voiced br�hma�as reciting the Vedas and many poets reciting
prayers, where there is a great happiness created by singers, dancers and musicians
learned in the arts taught by Bharata Muni, and where there are many relatives on
K���a's father's and the mother's side. Accompanied by Balar�ma, K���a flooded all
eyes with the nectar of His splendid handsomeness. Then all the worlds became
filled with sounds of "Glory! Glory! Glory!"

When K���a entered the elders rose from their seats. They became like a great
river of love flowing to the ocean of K���a.

K���a bowed down to everyone together and everyone individually, one by one.
With both arms, with lotus hands, and with many glances, He embraced everyone.

vrajam anu-to Vraja; parama-the high; avara-and the low; �di-beginning with;

manifest; lok��-people; tat-that; api-alos; vidhi�-Brahm�; ajalpat-spoke; atra-
here; mitram-friend; padam-word; iti-thus; hardam-friendship; amu�ya-of him; vakti-
spoke; su��hu-greatly.

The people of Vraja humbly think themselves lowly and unqualified. Even so,
the great demigod Brahma� praised them, saying they were the friends of Lord K���a.

Because in the past they performed many pious deeds the people of Vraja are
now able to gaze on the sapphire that is Lord K���a and the diamond that is Lord
Balar�ma.

His throat choked with tears, King Nanda could not speak. Aware of the love in
Nanda's heart, Lord K���a, His own smiling eyes also filled with tears, said:

O father, even though there is no danger in the forest of Vraja, and even
though the cows return from the forest of their own accord, We boys nevertheless
continue to herd the cows in the forest. The real reason we go to the forest is so
that we may play there.

Headed by Upananda, the people of the assembly said to Lord K���a: Your father
is the life of Vraja's people, and You are the life of him. What more need we say.
You already know everything.

sva-suta-sukh�ya punar dade bah�ni
vraja-pat�-sutam anvam�yad ��is-

vraja-pati�-the king of Vraja; atha-then; y�cak�n-the beggars; sam�k�ya-


seeing; sva-suta-sukh�ya-to please his son; puna�-again; dade-gave; bah�ni-
abundant; vraja-pat�-sutam-to the son of Vraja's king; anvam�yat-limitless; ��i�-

Seeing some beggars, and wishing to please his son, King Nanda gave them
abundant charity. They responded by giving limitless blessings to Nanda's son,
K���a. Even K���a could not find blessings equal to what they spoke.

With folded hands K���a begged to be allowed to go to the forest. Seeing His
eagerness, and after first having the br�hma�as recite auspicious mantras from the
Vedas, the people of Vraja brought Lord K���a to the place where the cows stayed.

From far away they could see the cows. They cows did not come. Then K���a and
the gopas approached the cows. Seeing K���a and the boys approach, the cows,
thinking them to be like their own calves, mooed and ran to them.

Making sounds of "jih� jihi", the cows went to the forest. Following the scent
of Lord K���a's limbs, they happily walked behind.

The older cowherd people followed behind. K���a showed His anxiety at this.
Understanding K���a's heart, the older cowherd people, tears choking their throats,
turned back.

After speaking words of instruction, Father Nanda turned to go. Nanda could
not help but use his glances to worship Lord K���a.

King Nanda and the people of Vraja somehow returned to their homes. Still,
they could not help turning their eyes to try and see K���a.

Gazing on Him with shining eyes, K���a's elders blessed Him. K���a bowed down

Wandering with His brother and friends in the forest, K���a gave the cows a
place to rest. Then, with the sweet sounds of His flute calling the cows, K���a
again wandered on whatever path pleased Him.

where He met many trees, vines, deer, and cuckoos, as well as many other birds

K���a, Balar�ma, and the boys imitated the movements of the bees, cuckoos,
peacocks, birds, monkeys, deer, and other creatures. Then the boys played music and
happily danced.

With many different pastimes the boys pleased K���a. Each boy pleased Him in

The very intelligent boys worshiped Lord K���a with many crooked pastimes.
Poetically speaking the joking words of a buffoon, they made K���a laugh.

Sometimes, speaking sweet words and displaying good and noble character, they
make Lord K���a melt with fraternal love. Other times, expertly propounding the
most illogical views in long-winded mock debates, they fill Lord K���a with wonder.

On some days Your beloved K���a goes to the M�nasa-ga�ga� on Govardhana Hill,
and on other days He enjoys pastimes in the water and by the shore of the Yamun�.

Sometimes K���a and His friends go to Bh����ravana and sometimes they enjoy
pastimes in other forests, by the Yamun�, or in other places.

With the sweet music of His flute Your beloved makes the demigods and the
birds tremble. Even more wonderful, He makes the unconscious beings and the
lifeless objects tremble also.

If by sounding His flute Your master, K���a, calls the cows to the water, the
sweet flute-sound makes the cows stunned with ecstasy, and they stand motionless
with half-chewed cud in their mouths. The flute-sound even makes the water become
stunned, and for a moment it is no longer liquid but hard like stone.

Seeing that on a hill with no streams or lakes the cows have become thirsty,
Your master plays His flute. The flute-music makes the hill melt in ecstasy,
providing water for the cows.

One day, His heart melting with kindness, K���a played His flute. The flute
music made the hills melt, and K���a left His footprint in a momentarily softened
stone there.

a river. The sweet flute-music makes the river become stunned and hardened, and

Sometimes Your beloved arranges for sporting fights between His friends, or
between the bulls or the buffaloes. One fighter defeats the other. Seeing the

fragrant rice cooked in fragrant ghee and mixed with fragrant saffron, many kinds
of bitter, sour, and pungent foods, cooked in different ways and brought from home,
pleasantly bitter soup of ca�aka, kalaya, m�sa, and mudga beans, many kinds of
fruits, leaves, and vegetables, bitter �malak� fruits cooked in ghee and spiced
with cumin seeds, many kinds of pleasantly bitter and sour foods, thick yogurt,
cap�t�s cooked with ghee, delicious thick sugared milk, mango juice that defeated
the taste of nectar, and scented water, all of this mixed with the affectionately
angry playful words of Mother Ya�oda� and the playful mock debate of the circle of
friends. When everyone had finished eating, the servants happily ate what remained.

Accompanied by His friends, Lord K���a again and again enjoyed si�x kinds of
delicious foods. In this way He satisfied everyone's desire.
