May the king of Vraja, who, when Indra covered the sun with clouds and sent
great rains making tumultuous sounds of jhamajjham with the playing of thunder,
protected His relatives by lifting a great hill, break apart all your fears.

O Lord who, by speaking with great logic stopped the indra-ya�ja, who is very
attached to worshiping the br�hma�as and Govardhana Hill, who convinced the cowherd
men in a moment, who at once began the worship of Govardhana Hill, . . .

. . .who, when, because the indra-yaj�a was stopped the king of Svarga filled the
horizons with thundering clouds showering rain to destroy Vraja, You saw Nanda and
the other gopas distressed by the constant rain and broken with fear and the cows
cold and fightened, then, impelled by love for Your friends and melting with
compassion, with Your left hand, to everyone's astonishment, like a playful regal
elephant, casually and happily lifted and continued to hold Govardhana Hill, the
great regal mountain that licks the sky, . . .

. . .who said: "O mother, why are you unhappy when Your son is noble and generous?
Friends, your troubles are over. Have no doubts in your hearts. . . .

fear; k�t�-done; iyam-this; vi��l�-great; may�-by Me; �aila-of the mountain; ��l�-
room; tat-that; asy�m-in that; prahar��t-happily; avaj��ta-ignoring; var��-the
rain; vihasya-laughing; amare�am-at the king of the demigods; kurudhvam-please do;
prave�am-entrance.

. . . These troubles are over. Do not be afraid. I have now made this hill into a
great house. Don't take this rain seriously. Laugh at Indra and enter here," . . .

people; v�ndai�-by the multitudes; par�nanda-transcendental bliss; sand�pita-
glowing; �sya-faces; aravindai�-lotus; gire�-of the hill; gatram-the opening;
�s�dya-attaining; harmya-a palace; upam�nam-like; cire�a-quickly; ati-very;
h���ai�-happy; pari���yam�nam-glorifying.

. . .who was again and again glorified by the gopas, as, with lotus faces glowing
with transcendental happiness, and breathing a sigh of relief, they entered the
palace-like cavity under the hill, . . .

katha� hanta dhatte sakh� te vi��khe
purast�d amu� prek�ya h� cintayeda�
muhur m�mak�n�� mano y�ti bhedam

giri�dram-the king of mountains; gurum-heavy; komale-soft; pa�ca-��khe-in the


five fingers; katham-how?; hanta-indeed; dhatte-placed; sakh�-friend; te-of you;
vi��khe-O Vi��kh�; purast�t-in the presence; amum-this; prek�ya-seeing; h�-O!;
cintay�-with anxiety; idam-this; muhu�-again and again; m�mak�n�m-my; mana�-mind;
y�ti-goes; bhedam-to breaking.

. . . about whom �r� R�dha� said: "Vi��kh�, how is it that your friend is now
holding the great, heavy mountain on His delicate five fingers? When I see Him in
this way My mind splits with anxiety. . . .

ghana-spar�i-k��a� vahann anna-k��a�
katha� sy�n na k�nta� saroj�k�i t�nta�

sthanadbhi�-thundering; ka�hore-hard; ghanai�-by clouds; dhv�nta-darkness;


ghore-terrible; bhramat-moving; v�ta-winds; m�le-garlands; hata-destroyed; ��e-the
directions; atra-here; k�le-in time; ghana-of the clouds; spar�i-touching; k��am-
great; vahann-how?; anna-of foodstuffs; k��am-great quantity; katham-how?; sy�n-may
be; na-not; k�nta�-lover; saroj�k�i-lotus-eyed; t�nta�-tired.

. . . O lotus-eyed one, how is it that at this time, when the directions are
darkened with terrible thundering clouds and garlanded with hurricane winds, My
lover does not feel tired by lifting this great hill, which has just eaten so many
offerings of food, and which has many tall peaks that touch the sky? . . .

na-not; ti��hanti-stands; go��he-in Vraja; ka�hora-hard; ��ga-bodies; da����-


clubs; kiyanta�-how many?; atra-here; gop��-cowherd men; samant�t-everywhere;
praca����-powerful; �ir��a-�ir��a; pras�na-flowers; �val�-multitudes; saukumarye-
delicate; dh�t�-held; dh��-shaking; iyam-this; bh�ri�-earth; asmin-in which; kim-
how?; �rye-O noble lady.

. . . In Vraja are there not many powerful gopa men, their bodies hard with
muscles? O noble lady, why should the heavy, shaking hill be held by someone as
delicate as a host of �ir��a flowers? . . .

gire-O hill; t�ta-O father; govardhana-O Govardhana; pr�rthan�-prayer; iyam-


this; vapu�-form; sth�lagreat; n�l�-kadamba flower; laghi��ham-lighter; vidheyam-
may become; bhavantam-you; yath�-as; dh�rayann-holding; e�a-He; haste-in the hand;
na-not; dhatte-experiences; �ramam-fatigue; ma�gala-�tman-O auspicious one; nama�-
obeisances; te-unto you.

. . . O Father Govardhana, I pray to you: Please become as light as a big kadamba


flower so He will not become tired as He holds you in His hand. O auspicious one, I
bow down and offer My respectful obeisances to you. . . .

. . . O sincere and noble friend, please gaze now at Mur�ri's face, splendid with
a smile at the edge of its moving locks of hair, with glistening cheeks and the
dancing of glittering eyes, and deeply in love with us all," . . .

marandam-the nectar; vara-excellent; prema-love; saurabhya-fragrance; p�r�t-from
the flood; amandam-great; dadh�nam-doing; madam-happiness; bh��gavat-like a
bumblebee; tu�ga-great; k�jam-humming; var��g�-of the beautiful girl; cala-
restless; �pa�ga-sidelong glances; bha�ga-waves; �pta-attained; p�jam-worship.

. . .who became like an intoxicated, loudly humming black bee drinking from the
flowering vine of R�dh�'s voice this honey, which was sweeter than the flood of the
sweet fragrance of the purest love, who was worshiped by the waves of beautiful
R�dh�'s restless sidelong glances, . . .

katham-how?; n�ma-indeed; dadhy�t-holds; k�ud�-with hunger; k��ma-thin;


tunda�-belly; �i�u�-boy; me-my; gari��ham-most heavy; gir�ndram-regal mountain;
mukunda�-Mukunda; tat-this; etasya-of that; tu��e-in the mouth; ha�h�t-forcibly;
arpaya-place; aram-at once; vraj�dh��a-O king of Vraja; dadhn�-with yogurt; �citam-
filled; kha��as�ram-sugar.

. . . about whom Mother Ya�od� said: "How can my boy Mukunda hold up this heavy
king of hills when His stomach has become so thin with hunger? O king of Vraja, you
must by force Him to eat by putting this sweetened yogurt in His mouth. . . .

ava��abhya sattva� tad asmai bala tva�
dadasv�vilamba� sva-hast�v alambam

mah�-great; bh�ra-burden; ni��he-situated; sthite-standing; te-of You;


kani��he-younger brother; labhe-I attain; vatsa-O child; n�l�mbara-O Balar�ma;
udd�ma-great; p���m-pain; ava��abhya-having rested; sattvam-strength; tat-that;
asmai-to Him; bala-O Balar�ma; tvam-You; dadasva-please give; avilambam-without
delay; sva-own; hast�v-hand; alambam-holding.

. . . O N�l�mbara Balar�ma, I am pained now that Your younger brother is holding


up this great burden. Show Your strength! Lend Him a hand!" . . .

iti-thus; snigdha-loving; var�am-words; sam�kar�ayantam-hearing; giram-words;


m�tu�-of His mother; en�m-this; ca-and; nirvar�ayantam-seeing; kani��ha-little;
agguli-finger; ���ga-on the tip; vinyasta-placed; gotram-mountain; paripr�nita-
pleased; vyagra-distressed; gop�la-of cowherd people; gotram-the family.

. . .who, hearing these affectionate words from His mother and glancing at her, by
casually shifting the hill to the tip of the little finger and holding it with
bravado, pacified the worried gopas, . . .

�i�ur dh�li-kel�-pa�u� k��ra-ka��ha�
bibharty adya sapt�bdiko bh�ri-bh�ra�

am�bhi�-with these; prabh�vai�-great powers; kuta�-from where?; abh�t-become;


aku��ha�-powereful; �i�u�-child; dh�li-in the dust; kel�-playing; pa�u�-expert;
k��ra-milk; ka��ha�-in His throat; bibharty-holds; adya-now; sapta-seven; abdika�-
years old; bh�ri-great; bh�ram-burden; girim-mountain; yac-which; cir�t-for a long
time; e�a-He; kail�sa-than Mount Kail�sa; s�ram-heavier.

. . . about whom the gopas said: "How did this seven-year-old boy, who still plays
in the dust, and who still practically has His mother's milk in His throat, get the
power to lift for so long this hill heavier than Mount Kail�sa? . . .

nakh�gre sa-hela� vahaty e�a yasm�t
girir dik-kar�ndr�gra-haste dhar�vad
bhuje pa�yat�sya sphuraty adya t�vat

na-not; �a�kh�-fear; dhara-of the mountain; bhra��ane-falling; asm�kam-of us;


asm�n-from that; nakha-of the nail; agre-on the tip; sa-He; helam-casually; vahaty-
holds; e�a-He; yasm�t-from which; giri�-the mountain; dik-of the directions;
kar�ndra-the regal elephants; agra-on the tip; haste-the trunk; dhar�vat-like the
earth; bhuje-on the arm; pa�yata-look!; asya-of Him; sphuraty-is manifested; adya-
now; t�vat-in that way.

. . . Because He holds it on the tip of His finger with such casual playfulness,
we do not fear the hill will fall. Look! The hill in His hand is like the earth at
the end of the trunk of the regal elephants that hold up the directions, . . .

bhogai�-eating; vrajendre�a-the king of Vraja; s�rdham-with; dh�ta-held; pr�ti-
love; yogai�-connected; muhu�-at every moment; ballavai�-by the cowherd people;
v�k�yam�n�sya-seen; candram-the moon; pura�-in the presence; sapta-seven; r�tra;
nights; antara-within; tyakta-abandoned; tandram-fatigue.

. . . on the moon of whose face King Nanda and the gopas, who had completely given
up eating and who were full of transcendental love, gazed with the great stars of
wide-open eyes, who gave up sleeping for seven nights, . . .

t���-blades of grass; k�tya-making; ghor�n-horrible; sahasr���u-the effulgent sun;
caur�n-eclipsing; duranta-unbearable; uru-of thunder; �abd�n-sounds; k�ta-done;
avaj�am-contempt; abd�n-clouds.

. . .who mocked Indra's terrible, lightning-filled, sun-eclipsing, ferociously-


thundering clouds propelled by hurricane winds and garlanded with rainbows, . . .

d���e�-from the eyes; vraja-Vraja; ���vadi��am-made prosperous; pra��ta-created;
uru-great; v���e�-rain; bal�re�-of Indra; ca-and; durm�nit�m-false conception;
visphurantam-manifesting; nir�k�tya-abandoning; du��a-ali-of the wicked; da��e-in
punishing; durantam-boundless.

. . .who drove away the false pride of blinded-with-the mud-of-ego, rain-sending


Indra, who restored prosperity to Vraja, who shows no limit in punishing the
wicked, . . .

. . .who said: "The great rains, the hurricane winds making sounds of jha�jha, the
lightning, and the terrible garlands of clouds have all gone. The sun peacefully
shines in the sky. O heroes flooded with bliss, now you may all go outside." . . .

multitude; yath�p�rva-as before; vinyasta-placed; �ailendra-the king of mountains;
bh�ram-weight; dadhi-yogurt; k�ira-milk; l�ja-grains; a�khurai�-sprouts;
bh�vin�bhi�-by the beautiful women; mud�-with joy; k�ryam��am-showered;

. . .who after speaking these words made Your kinsmen go out, who placed the great
hill where it was before, and whom the beautiful gop�s showered with yogurt, milk,
grains, and sprouts, . . .

namaskurmahe �arma-hetor bhavantam
tvayi spa��a-ni��hy�ta-bh�ya�-cid-indu�
mud� na� pras�d�-kuru prema-bindum

vayam-we; hanta-indeed; govinda-O K���a; saundaryavantam-handsome;


namaskurmahe-offer our respectful obeisances; �arma-happiness; heto�-from the
cause; bhavantam-unto You; tvayi-in You; spa��a-manifested; ni��hy�ta-placed;
bh�ya�-again; cit-of knowledge; indum-moon; mud�-with happiness; na�-of us;
pras�d�-kind; kuru-please be; prema-of love; bindum-a drop.

. . .O handsome Lord Govinda, we happily bow down to offer our respects to You.
Please be kind and give to us a drop of the pure love that completely eclipses the
moon of non-devotional philosophy.

activities and Your harsh, proud words to powerful King Ka�sa," O Lord to whom the

Finding a flood of K���a's fragrance in the breeze, She became maddened and,

Trapping that boundless fragrance in Her heart, overwhelmed with love and the
hairs of Her body erect with joy, the beautiful girl, like a bumblebee, followed
it.

Seeing K���a, She became happy. Pretending to gather flowers, to walk very
slowly, and to trip Her lotus feet and fall, She entered a forest cottage.

"Be kind. I happily picked one flower. O lotus-eyed one, I shall go at once. I
have very important duties now at home. Please do not delay me any longer in this

R�dh� replied: "My husband is cruel, hot-tempered, and eager to find fault
with Me. Talkative old Mukhar� lives in My house. My superiors are all intelligent.
They will condemn Me. O Lord of the flowers, why must You create this catastrophe
for Me?

"O lotus-eyed one, do not blacken the reputation of this respectable girl. The

pastimes in a solitary place near the charming waves of the Yamun�, in a forest
decorated with many paths and filled with bumblebees maddened by the sweet
fragrance, and pleasant with cooling breezes,

delight the devotees, who is peaceful and eternally young, and who expanded into
many forms during the dancing, exclaimed "Jaya!" when He saw the r�sa dance arena.

The gop�-r�sa deity, wearing the mark of �r�vatsa, perspiring, and jubilant,
was very happy to display His strength in the wrestling arena.

charms the senses, who is dark as a host of monsoon clouds, whose neck is graceful,
who trembles with transcendental bliss, who wears yellow garments, whose virtues
cool the burning sufferings of material existence, and who stays in the company of
the young gop�s.
