Task 1:

The given chart reveals the percentage of private households and rented house
in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Generally speaking, the majority of English and Welsh shifted from renting a
house to living in a house of their own.
In 1918, only about 22% of the people owned their accommodation and up to
78% of them lived in a rented one. However, in the next 43 years, the percentage
of people whose households in owned accommodation went up gradually to
50%, equalized with the percentage of those whose households in rented
accommodation by the year 1971.
These contrasting trends continued until 2001, when the ratio of people owning
their private house reached its peak at 69%, doubled the figure of people who
had to rent a house for living. Nevertheless, the data of both categories witnessed
a slight change in 2011 as about 6% of the former shifted to the latter.
In brief, the two figures experienced upward and downward trends throughout
the period.

Task 2:
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

In the modern society, the development and competitiveness in all fields open a
wider range of selection for people to choose. Nonetheless, not in all
circumstances can we freely make our own decisions. The essay below will
present my reasons.

Thanks to the technological advancement as well as the free market, which

encourages the competitiveness, customers have more choices to choose the best
service for themselves. In the past, people in each region could only consume the
local food, but now with the development of transportation, we can enjoy the
cuisine from many other parts of the world. For instance, in big cities, the
number of international restaurants is growing fast with flavors from Eastern
countries such as Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, India to Western
countries like Italy, France, Spain. Food industry, beside beverage, beauty,
fashion, fitness, game industry, is just a representative for the service industry,
which is flourishing with both giant and small companies emerging everyday. Job
opportunities also become more diverse as there are a number of new
occupations that we didn’t have before. Even chances to have a spouse are easier
thanks to the birth of application like tinder or couple-matching app.

On the other hand, more choices doesn’t mean we can choose freely as our
decisions are affected by many outside and inside factors. We can have our
choice of service we use, but not all decisions in our life can we make. For
example, a person’s job may depend on their natural talents, their ability to
accomplish different types of task. A girl who doesn’t have a beautiful voice can
hardly become a singer even if she loves singing and no one prevents her from
becoming one. In some traditional families, the marriage of a person relies on the
willingness of his or her parents.
In short, nowadays we do have more choices comparing to the past. However,
the ability to make our own choices depends on the circumstances of each
individual.
