PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
Five (5) Religious Education Church Wondering at communities and societies

Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person

This unit covers a lot of content about the Catholic Church and its community, including how communities provide the needs for people, how the early
Church gathered as a community, how Jesus chose the first leaders of the Church, how the Catholic Church has rules to guide people in the community, and
how members of God’s family are called to love in communities. Human beings need communities. Without them, many of their personal needs could not be
provided for. However, to be effective, communities need leaders and rules. As people wonder at the communities to which they belong, many begin to
wonder at God who created people for community. Many have realised that communities are evidence that God provides for people. Jesus showed by his own
example the need to obey community leaders and rules. He began a special community, the Church, to help people draw on the help of God to overcome the
selfishness and temptations that make it hard for them always to love and to do good. Members of the Church, like any community, need to meet, to obey
leaders and to obey rules. They also share the basic teachings of Jesus. Followers of Jesus find God’s power helping them as they try to live as Jesus taught.
This includes obeying the Fourth Commandment. Followers of Jesus continue to wonder at their need for communities, including the Church community.
There are four common communities that people belong to, which are the family, the parish, the Catholic school and other communities. Families fulfil many
of the needs of its members. There are times when people need the special support of their family. Families gather together at different times to provide
support to one another, celebrate and nurture relationships. The parish or Church community helps people fulfil the need to develop a relationship with God
and with each other. This was the purpose for which Jesus began his Church. Parish communities gather because they believe in the promise of Jesus and that
he is present with them when they do so. The Catholic Church provides schools to offer an education of the Catholic faith based on the teachings of Jesus.
Through relationships between staff and students, young people learn and put into practice the love, compassion and justice of Jesus in the world. Through
education and relationships in Catholic schools, students are encouraged to promote justice, particularly to those who are culturally, physically, intellectually,
spiritually and financially disadvantaged. Catholic schools have the important role of passing on the Catholic faith and forming students to contribute to
Australian society. There are many communities that families and individuals can belong to. For example, sporting clubs, dance clubs, music and drama
groups, parish youth groups and government and local councils.

Society is a broader concept than community. Following the community topic introduction first in Year Three, the concept of community continues to be extended in the first
part of this unit. The purpose is to lay a foundation for presenting the topic ‘Church’ in a way that is appropriate for New Evangelisation.

PLANNED RITUAL

OPENING PRAYER
O God, of new beginnings, we know that this is a year full of promise and possibility. Enfold us in your love and fill us with your truth. May your presence with us, guide us in
our friendships and in our learning. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.
Amen.

First Reading
Appointment of Tribal Leaders (Deuteronomy 1:9-19)
9 At that time I said to you, “I am unable by myself to bear you. 10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, so that today you are as numerous as the stars of heaven. 11 May
the Lord, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times more and bless you, as he has promised you! 12 But how can I bear the heavy burden of your disputes
all by myself? 13 Choose for each of your tribes individuals who are wise, discerning, and reputable to be your leaders.” 14 You answered me, “The plan you have
proposed is a good one.” 15 So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and reputable individuals, and installed them as leaders over you, commanders of thousands,
commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officials, throughout your tribes. 16 I charged your judges at that time: “Give the members of
your community a fair hearing, and judge rightly between one person and another, whether citizen or resident alien. 17 You must not be partial in judging: hear out the small
and the great alike; you shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. Any case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.” 18 So I charged you
at that time with all the things that you should do.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Response: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm
Response: Lord, teach me your ways.
The Lord guides us in the way we should go, and protects those who please him. If we fall we will not stay down because the Lord will help us up.
Response: Lord, teach me your ways.
Good people’s words are wise and are always fair. They keep the law of God in their heart and never depart from it.
Response: Lord, teach me your ways.

Gospel Acclamation
Alleluia, Alleluia, Aleluia!
Lord, teach us your ways,
You have the message of eternal life.
Alleluia!

Gospel (Mt 13:54-55)

The Lord be with you.

ALL: And with your spirit.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

ALL: Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus taught in the synagogue, and those who heard him were amazed. “Where did he get such wisdom?” they asked. “And what about his miracles? Isn’t he the
carpenter’s son? Isn’t Mary his mother?”
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Response: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
