TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

CRASH BARRIERS FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL POLES

Technical Specification

Drawing Reference: Crash Barrier for traffic signal Pole (Large RD. 21/L & Small RD. 21/S)

Fabrication. Crash Barriers to be fabricated from MS pates and MS pipes as per the
dimensions shown in the drawing. All dimensions are in mm unless otherwise shown.
Various components of the crash barrier should be manufactured to the dimensions and
drilled using templates so that the components will exactly match with any other piece
supplied against this order. As an alternative for the formed cap illustrated in the drawing, a 3
mm sheet steel made to a concave curvature as shown and joined with the pipe by continuous
welding and edges ground to smooth finish can be accepted.

The item need not be supplied in assembled form and can be delivered as separate
components.

Protective Treatment.

All steel parts (unless otherwise specified) shall, after fabrication, be hot dipped
galvanised in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461:1999 table D.1
Steel pipes to be hot dipped galvanised in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461:1999 table
D.1, but with a coating requirement of 610 g/sq.m.
All connecting bolts, nuts and washers, excluding components made from stainless steel,
shall be hot dip galvanized in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461:1999 table D.2
The anti-corrosion treatment is expected to be kept free from corrosion for a period of ten
years under condition of normal exposure to the open atmosphere of the region.

No drilling, cutting or welding of any of the components is allowed after galvanising without
the prior approval of the engineer. However, the 16 Nos. of 3mm holes shown in the drawing
can be drilled after galvanizing. Treatment of areas of mechanical damage or other surface
defects shall only be permitted with prior approval of the engineer.

Identification Mark. The Manufacturer should mark their initials along with the month and
year of manufacture on each component of the barrier so that they can be easily identified
later on. This mark should be on the inner side of the barrier system and should remain at
least for a period of ten years. However, the marking process should not damage the
component, galvanizing and the paint.

Specification for Painting. External surface (only one side) of the plates (flat plates - 690
mm x 406 mm x 3 mm & partial quantity of bend plates) need to be painted to black finish as
follows. The painting should be suitable for virgin hotdip galvanized surface and should be
done in the conditions and as per the practices, procedures and treatments
specified/recommended by the paint manufacturer/s.

System A
One coat of Hempel Paints Hempadur 15550.
Two coats of Hempel Paints Hempadur Hi Build 45200.

System B
One coat of Hempel Paints Hemucryl Ti Coat 18200.
Two coats of Hempel Paints Hemucryl Enamel 58100.
System C
First coat of primer suitable for hotdip galvanised surface – Berger paint’s Luxaprime
1600 (Mordant Solution).
Two coats of Berger’s Luxathane 5000 Polyurethane Paint.

Any variation for the items quoted by you from the specification given above should be clearly
stated in the quotation and is subject to our approval.

Testing and approval

If you are successful in qualifying for the purchase order, you may have to manufacture and
submit a sample of the barrier for testing by our laboratory for ensuring the adherence to the
specification. Purchase order will be released only after such approval. Any delay in
submission of the sample within the specified time may automatically disqualify the supplier.

Testing of random samples of the barriers need to be done during various stages of
manufacturing - (1) after fabrication, (2) after Hotdip galvanizing & (3) after painting. As
decided by this Ministry, the engineers will take up the tests at Ministry’s testing laboratory or at
the manufacturer’s factory. Necessary arrangements for these tests will have to done by the
supplier.

Random samples from the barriers supplied will be tested before accepting the consignment and
releasing the payment.
