Skimming – reading for gist for example when you read and advertisement

For the development of this sub-skill, we propose the following activity using
“cognates”. The purpose of this activity is use cognates as early as preschool. As
students move up the grade levels, they can be introduced to cognates that are more
sophisticated and to cognates that have multiple meanings in both languages. We
design an activity where the students need to read a text, find three or four cognates,
and write them on sticky pads. Collect those notes and put them on an OUR
COGNATES laminated chart. Before the class ends, read or have students read
them to the class. Discuss spellings or sounds that are the same and different
between the cognates.
Extensive reading- reading for pleasure or interest for example when you read
your favorite novel.
For the development of this sub-skill, we propose the following activity “make a
meme” The purpose of this activity is use a meme like a fun communication tool in
the classroom. A meme is often represented by an image with a brief caption or text
and shared with other to capture attention or elicit a quick laugh. The activity consists
of having students create memes related to what they are learning. This can help
them demonstrate their understanding of the material.
Reading for detail- when you read for an specific information in a text for
example when you are reading a newspaper
For the development of this sub-skill we propose an activity where the students need
to “answer questions about a story” The purpose of this activity is that students not
only learn vocabulary or grammar, also they need to learn how to understand a text
since students need to acquire different reading strategies to gain confidence and
continue reading independently in the long term.
